The Göttingen Handel Festival had to be canceled in the anniversary year 2020, apart from a few digital substitute events, like almost all other music festivals. This also affected the annual symposium and the lecture, which each make up the main part of the GHB. Nevertheless, there are good reasons why the Handel Society decided to keep the GHB published on a regular basis. The present volume therefore brings together, inspired by the anniversary year, five independent contributions that are dedicated to particular aspects of Handel's reception in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This includes a documentation of the Göttingen anniversary exhibition from 2020. Oskar Hagen's text adaptation of Handel's 'Rodelinda', which was created for the Göttingen performance in 1920, will also be republished for the occasion.

The Social-Democratic parties of Europe are in decline, a diagnosis missed by no one today. Support for this opinion comes from many directions - from their loss of votes in recent elections to a growing lack of party members to the apparent failure of party heads to react adequately to these very developments. When reading reports both in the standard press and in scientific circles, however, the impression arises that this downturn is irreversible and must be accepted as such.But that is just the question. The Social-Democratic parties have experienced similar things in the past and have survived to the present day. And perhaps, slowly, new perspectives are on the horizon that will form the basis for a resurrection of old strengths: new models for coalitions with other parties, the revitalisation of membership rolls, better internal choice of candidates and policies, a welcoming of newcomers from other parties and a general openness toward new ideas. Experiments are now being launched with these means - and are showing first positive results.

Why was the German working-class movement struggling against the rise of National-Socialism so easily defeated, whereas the French working-class movement, which was numerically and organizationally much weaker than its German counterpart, succeeded in mobilizing hundreds of thousands of workers against the radical right at the moment of a "fascist threat"? To answer this question, Joachim C. Haberlen's study investigates the social and political practices within the working-class movement in Leipzig and Lyon at the end of the Weimar Republic and, respectively, the Third French Republic. At the core of the study are the role of trust and distrust in social and political movements, and the ambivalent consequences of the politicization of the working-class movement within its local context. The study draws on a broad variety of primary sources from archives in Leipzig, Berlin, Lyon, Paris, and elsewhere. Informed by everyday historical approaches, it creates a lively and multifaceted image of workers' lives and grassroots politics in both cities. The comparative approach results in a careful analysis that identifies major differences that help explain the different outcomes of the working-class movement's struggles. Leipzig's working-class movement, the study shows, was characterized by a deep-seated distrust, which was a major impediment for a successful mobilization against the Nazis. Furthermore, the politicization of the local working-class movement not only reproduced the conflicts between Social Democrats and Communists at the rank-and-file level, but also turned politics into a "nuisance" that made many workers turn away from politics altogether. In Lyon, by contrast, workers succeeded in overcoming existing distrust. In addition, the politicization of the working-class movement during the rise of the Popular Front (1934-36) had, at first, an integrative function. Yet, soon enough the overburdening of social practices like strikes with political meaning contributed to the decline of the Popular Front.

This led to changed organizational forms in the production of large companies. For the first time, systematic management teachings and thus new directions in organizational science literature developed. In both countries, entrepreneurs began to structure their businesses in a reflective way, to professionalize management and to think through problems of work organization. This process is extensively examined in the present work. The comparison between the neighboring countries, both of which are among the most industrialized countries in Europe, is intended to clarify how this new organizational theory was similar in large companies, but also which branch-specific and national peculiarities gained importance in the companies.

The biography of Commune I founder Dieter Kunzelmann combines the experiences of a youth in the Franconian province with the history of the subversive avant-garde around 1960, the so-called "cultural revolution" of the sixties and the increasing radicalization and militancy of the incipient German terrorism since 1969. In the course of the tolerance legislation, elementary schools for Jewish children in the Habsburg Empire were established from 1782. In Galicia, these schools were under the supervision of the Jewish enlightener Herz Homberg (17491841), a pupil of Moses Mendelssohn, from 1787 until they were closed in 1806. In a short period of time, this set up a network of over 100 schools in which Jewish children learned the German language. In May 1933, the so-called Bernheim petition was submitted to the League of Nations in Geneva on behalf of the Paris Comité des Délégations Juives. With it, the disenfranchisement of German Jews by National Socialist Germany was charged under international law. It caused all anti-Jewish laws in Upper Silesia to be suspended by 1937. This complaint, its genesis and its astonishing consequences from today's point of view have largely been forgotten, as has Jewish minority diplomacy as a whole or its individual representatives, e.g. Leo Motzkin, Emil Margulies or Nathan Feinberg.
