Die wissenschaftliche Diskussion um die Entstehung von Weihnachten und Epiphanias kreist meist um zwei Entstehungshypothesen: Vor allem im angelsächsischen Sprachraum wird in der theologischen Literatur ein innerchristlicher Entstehungszusammenhang aufgrund von frühchristlichen Berechnungen favorisiert, während sonst meist auf parallele heidnische Feiern als Anlaß für die Entstehung der beiden Feste verwiesen wird. Eine derartige Parallelbildung eines christlichen Festes am Termin eines beliebten heidnischen Festes würde, so die weit verbreitete Ansicht, den heutigen Kenntnissen über die Inkulturation des Christentums entsprechen. Hans Förster zeigt, daß beide Hypothesen für die Entstehung von Weihnachten und Epiphanias die Situation des vierten Jahrhunderts nicht erklären können. Die Sonnensymbolik hat sicherlich zur Wahl des Festtermins entscheidend beigetragen. Sie konnte dies jedoch gerade deswegen, weil es eben kein paralleles römisches Sonnwendfest gab, das sich im vierten Jahrhundert besonderer Beliebtheit erfreut hätte. Das angeblich weit verbreitete und beliebte "Sol-Invictus-Fest" wurde vielmehr aufgrund einer höchst fragwürdigen Interpretation christlicher Quellen konstruiert; eine genaue Lektüre dieser Quellen vermag jedoch zu zeigen, daß es dieses Fest wahrscheinlich nicht gab, zumindest hat es sich um kein verbreitetes oder beliebtes Fest gehandelt. Dies bedeutet eine entscheidende Akzentverschiebung der gängigen Sicht des Christentums im vierten Jahrhundert.

Am Beispiel der südlichen Levante, dem antiken Israel und Palästina, untersuchen die Autoren der hier gesammelten Beiträge die "Medialität" vor allem der materiellen Kultur des Alltags und überprüfen damit den Medienbegriff auf seine Übertragbarkeit auf antike Kommunikationstrukturen. Classical Pentateuch research mainly dealt with the books of Genesis, Exodus and Deuteronomy and it is only in recent decades that the literary and theological meanings of Moses' fourth book has been rediscovered. In this volume, Christian Frevel lets the interplay between narrative and legislative material - which is often not understood - emerge into new light, examining the texts of the Book of Numbers as inner-biblical interpretations and tradition-bound innovations. Cloaked in the Israelites' 40-year long sojourn in the desert, the Book of Numbers presents a tightly-woven fabric of texts which reflect the social and cultic orders, discuss questions of leadership and explore the meaning of the Promised Land to Israel's existence. The Book of Numbers is characterized in its entirety by transformations: for example, the exodus generation becomes the desert generation and leadership is transferred from Moses to Joshua, from Aaron to Eleazar. Important innovations such as the hierarchical organization of the cult, including the role of the Levites or the hereditary law concerning daughters, are cultivated within these transformations. The people's time in the desert (re)form their social frameworks and renders them sustainable for the existence in the Promised Land. Important themes such as community and cult organization, the enduring election of the Israelites, the meaning of the Promised Land for the collective identity, questions of hierarchical leadership and democratic participation, of collective guilt and individual liability, along with many other aspects, are dealt with in the texts. Without the literary traditions of the Book of Numbers, which were mostly set down around the 5th-4th centuries BCE, the formation of the Pentateuch as Torah would not have been conceivable. The studies of this volume reveal the thematic diversity of the book against a backdrop of its literary creation within the Penta- and Hexateuch.

In this study, Fredrik Hägglund presents an interpretation based on a hypothesis that conflicts emerged between the people in the land of Israel and those who returned from exile. He analyzes these conflicts with the help of contemporary refugee studies, other texts of the Old Testament, and also relevant passages in Isa 40-55. At the end of the exile, there was hope that the deported people would return to Israel, that it would be rebuilt, and that Jerusalem would again flourish. This hope is most clearly expressed in Isa 40:1-52:10. However, as time went by, there was a realization that the envisaged glorious return was in reality a rather limited return, and the joy of receiving those who returned had turned into conflicts, not least regarding the possession of land and the availability of places to live. In this situation, someone probably reflected on the message of Isa 40:1-52:10 and sought to understand what had gone wrong. Isa 53 was then inserted as an explanation of how the people in the land of Israel, i.e. the "we," should have received those who returned, i.e. the servant. If this embrace had taken place, Mother Zion would have rejoiced, as described in Isa 54. Instead of these pictures painted for us in Isa 53 and 54, we encounter the reality of the conflicts described in Isa 56-66.

Die vierzehn kurzen Briefe, acht vom Philosophen, sechs vom Apostel, sind in sehr schlechtem spätantikem Latein geschrieben und weitgehend inhaltslos. Ihr Ziel ist es, mittels eines Austauschs von freundschaftlichen Billetts, wie er unter den Intellektuellen der Spätantike üblich war, Seneca zum Freund des Paulus zu machen und so das hohe Ansehen Senecas in der spätantiken lateinischen Theologie apostolisch zu sanktionieren. Dieser Band bewegt sich genau an der Schnittstelle, an der sich aus der konkreten Begegnung mit der Stadt Rom ein verarbeitetes Rombild in der Theologie, im Geistesleben und im Kunstschaffen des Protestantismus entwickelt. Der Untersuchungszeitraum beginnt im späten 18. Jahrhundert, weil zu dieser Zeit die konkrete Begegnung mit Rom neu an Bedeutung gewinnt. Er endet mit den Jahren um den Ersten Weltkrieg, der eine tiefe Zäsur darstellt. In dieser Zeit gewinnt umgekehrt auch die Präsenz von Protestanten in der Ewigen Stadt eine gewisse Konsistenz, die Aspekte des kulturellen Lebens prägte. Demnach kombinieren die Autoren der hier gesammelten Beiträge zwei methodische Zugänge: einerseits einen Theologie- und Theologen-zentrierten Zugriff mit Beiträgen zu einzelnen "großen" Gestalten, die Eindrücke von Rom verarbeiteten. Andererseits die römische Perspektive: Künstler und Intellektuelle, aber auch einfache Leute, die nach Rom kamen und für die das protestantische Bekenntnis mehr oder minder prägend war. Auf diese Weise wird der deutschsprachige Protestantismus in seiner ganzen Breite wahrgenommen.
