Scarecrow Press Handbook of the American Frontier, The Far West: Four Centuries of Indian-White Relationships
The projected five volume Handbook of the American Frontier is intended as a work of first reference that provides insights into Indian-white relationships during the first four centuries of our colonial and United States history. Based upon both primary and secondary sources, it includes the Indian viewpoint as well as the white, and provides references to assist the reader to additional information. Volume IV of the Handbook is an account of men and events important in the frontier history of the West from the earliest Spanish explorations to the last Indian battle, fought in 1918. Like previous volumes, it is presented as an historical dictionary with entries relating to the experiences of Indian leaders and tribes, traders, explorers, missionaries, mountain men, military officers, and frontier settlers. Much attention is devoted to warfare, treaties, and alliances between European and Native American Nations. Tribes featured include the Apaches, Navahos, Pueblos, Utes, Paiutes, Shoshonis, Modocs, Yumas, and the proliferation of native peoples inhabiting the Pacific Coast from Mexico to Canada. The other regional volumes cover events and peoples in the Southwest Woodlands, the Northeastern Woodlands, and the Great Plains. The final volume of the set will include a general index, bibliography and chronology.

Documents the craft of the organbuilder Gerhard Brunzema (1927-1992) in terms of the organs he built and how his instruments and his approach to organbuilding had an influence on music history. Divided into two parts, Part I contains essays by people who knew Brunzema and his work, and documents his skill both in the restoration of historically significant instruments in Europe, as well as in the building of new organs in his own style throughout the world. Also included in this section are two musical compositions in his memory by Gerhard Krapf and Barrie Cabena. Part II details the organs themselves during the three phases of his career: in Germany (1954-1971) with his partner Jurgen Ahrend; in Quebec, Canada (1972-1979) with Casavant Freres; and in Ontario (1980-1992) in his own workshop. This section features a complete listing of all the organs he built, descriptions of seventy organs, and a complete technical documentation of one of his instruments. Also included are three articles by Brunzema, proposals for organs that were never built, an annotated discography, a listing of the published photographs of his organs, videography, bibliography, 16 black and white photographs and 41 line drawings.

Ben Johnston is an American composer internationally known for his work with extended just intonation. This is a critical-analytical study of his early compositions, his studies with Harry Partch and John Cage, and his experiments with just intonation, serialism, indeterminacy, jazz, and finally, extended just intonation. The Conservatoire Américain, the French musical institution at the Palais de Fontainebleau, was responsible for training generations of American musicians. Its students and faculty are among some of the most influential musical figures of the twentieth century, including Aaron Copland, Nadia Boulanger, and Elliott Carter.
