Anna Coatalen (née Hook) was born in Clifton, Bristol, studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art London, and then worked as a book illustrator before WW2. It was as a WRNS in Plymouth, that she met her Anglo/French husband Hervé, an RNVR engineer officer, which resulted in her spending her life in France. Anna painted prolifically throughout her life, continuing right up to her death aged 95, but never sought to publicise her work. Amongst friends who appreciated and admired her, were the artists Mary Fedden and Alexander Goudie, whose son, Lachlan, has written a very perceptive introduction to this book. Her eldest daughter Annik, with help from her family, has gathered together a selection of her most compelling works, ranging from early woodcuts and paintings to the three stained-glass windows in the Île Tudy church, Brittany. This collection of unique poems is significant for its size and thematic coherence, and for the insight it provides into regional literary culture, that of south Derbyshire, in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Isamu Noguchi, born in Los Angeles as the illegitimate son of an American mother and a Japanese poet father, was one of the most prolific yet enigmatic figures in the history of twentieth-century American art. Throughout his life, Noguchi (1904-1988) grappled with the ambiguity of his identity as an artist caught up in two cultures. His personal struggles--as well as his many personal triumphs--are vividly chronicled in The Life of Isamu Noguchi, the first full-length biography of this remarkable artist. Published in connection with the centennial of the artist's birth, the book draws on Noguchi's letters, his reminiscences, and interviews with his friends and colleagues to cast new light on his youth, his creativity, and his relationships. During his sixty-year career, there was hardly a genre that Noguchi failed to explore. Globally, discussions about sex work focus on exploitation. The media regularly provides us with stories about teen girls coerced to perform sexual acts for money, frequently beaten and robbed by their pimps or traffickers. While one would have to be hard-pressed to deny that sex workers are victimized, the popular media and our political leaders emphasize sex work as exclusively exploitative. In Negotiating Sex Work, Carisa R. Showden and Samantha Majic present a series of essays that depict sex work as an issue far more complex than generally perceived. Positions on sex work are primarily divided between those who consider that selling sexual acts is legitimate work and those who consider it a form of exploitation. Organized into three parts, Negotiating Sex Work rejects this either/or framework and offers instead diverse and compelling contributions that aim to reframe these viewpoints. Part I addresses how knowledge about sex work and sex workers is generated. Set in the late nineteenth century on a mythical island off the coast of Yemen, Radwa Ashour's Siraaj: An Arab Tale tells the poignant story of a mother and son as they are drawn inextricably into a revolt against their island's despotic sultan. Amina, a baker in the sultan's palace, anxiously awaits her son's return from a long voyage at sea, fearful that the sea has claimed Saïd just as it did his father and grandfather. Saïd, left behind in Alexandria by his ship as the British navy begins an attack on the city, slowly begins to make his way home, witnessing British colonial oppression along the way. Saïd's return brings Amina only a short-lived peace. The lessons he learned from the Egyptians' struggle against the British have radicalized him. When Saïd learns the island's slave population is planning a revolt against the sultan's tyrannical rule, both he and Amina are soon drawn in. Beautifully rendered from Arabic into English by Barbara Romaine, Radwa Ashour's novella speaks of the unity that develops among varied peoples as they struggle against a common oppressor and illuminates the rich cultures of both the Arab and African inhabitants of the island. Sub-Saharan African culture is a subject addressed by few Arabic novelists, and Radwa Ashour's novella does much to fill that void.

Hidden Treasures The Bas-Reliefs on the Kemp Town Estate illustrates, for the very first time, the 40 plaster bas reliefs, hitherto unidentified and unrecorded, which were thought to have been installed by Thomas Cubitt in the houses he built on the Estate between 1823 - 1850. 20 of these sculptures were designed by world famous Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1834), the 'Master of the Bas Relief ' , forming an important hitherto unknown Collection of his work in this country.  Situated in 20 different houses, some with multiple freeholders, the Collection is thus owned by a large number of people most of whom have never met each other and have no idea of the importance of what is on their walls ! Identical examples in plaster and marble originally commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte, Prince Albert and the Duke of Devonshire can be found at both Osborne House and Chatsworth and indeed in many large houses and museums in this and other countries. Two marble originals, commissioned by Thomas Read Kemp's brother-in-law, Alexander Baring, were sold at Sotheby's in June 2019 for £312,500. Hidden Treasures is profusely illustrated with photographs accompanied by the known provenance of each work. Maps and charts show clearly in which houses the bas reliefs are installed.

This essential book examines the twin issues of the preservation of, and access to, cultural heritage and the problems copyright law creates and the solutions it can at the same time provide. The expert contributors explore the extent to which current copyright laws from Europe and beyond prevent or help the constitution of a centralized online repository of our cultural heritage.
