The European reformations meant major changes in theology, religion, and everyday life. Some changes were immediate and visible in a number of countries: monasteries were dissolved, new liturgies were introduced, and married pastors were ordained, other more hidden. Theologically, as well as practically the position of the church in the society changed dramatically, but differently according to confession and political differences. This volume addresses the question of how the theological, liturgical, and organizational changes changes brought by the reformation within different confessional cultures throughout Europe influenced the everyday life of ordinary people within the church and within society. The different contributions in the book ask how lived religion, space, and everyday life were formed in the aftermath of the reformation, and how we can trace changes in material culture, in emotions, in social structures, in culture, which may be linked to the reformation and the development of confessional cultures.

Der 1415 auf dem Konstanzer Konzil als Ketzer verbrannte Johannes Hus wurde vor der Reformation gemeinhin als ein Häretiker betrachtet. Mit Luther und der anbrechenden Reformation begann jedoch ein Umdeutungsprozess, der zu einer völligen Neubewertung von Hus führte. Bereits früh wurde er auf Seiten der Reformation als Heiliger, Märtyrer und Vorläufer Luthers betrachtet. Auf römischer Seite galt Hus jedoch weiterhin als prototypische Ketzergestalt. In einem ersten Teil der Studie untersucht Eike Hinrich Thomsen die Prozesse und Ereignisse, die dazu geführt haben, dass sich das Bild von Hus mit der beginnenden Reformation nachhaltig ändern sollte. Ein zweiter Teil verfolgt einzelne Rezeptionsstränge, die bis in das 18. Jahrhundert hineinreichen. Neben der starken lutherischen Hus-Rezeption werden auch andere Gruppen wie Reformierte, „radikale Reformer“ oder Katholische untersucht. Über die schriftlichen Quellen hinaus werden zahlreiche bildliche und materielle Quellen in die Untersuchung miteinbezogen.

This collected volume is dedicated to the role of prayer books in lay piety in medieval and early modern contexts. Instead of focusing on individual examples, it places them within the broader genre of devotional literature and considers them in connection with prevailing cultural, religious and artistic developments, taking into account the Reformation, the printing press and growing interest in lay piety, in the context of increasing individualism, developing literacy, privatization and/or personalization of religion. Contextualising devotional literature, the volume refines understandings of religious practice fostered by traditional Catholicism and early modern Protestantism and its relationship with the written word, locating the use of books within a devotional 'diet' that included oral recitation of prayers as well as contemplation of images. Stressing continuities, often against the grain of existing literature, this volume highlights differences between regional cultures of prayer in contrast to norms set by the universal Church and emphasizes the tension between public/communal and private/individual devotion.

During the first half of the sixteenth century the Spanish Inquisition fought Lutheranism in a benign way, but as time passed the power struggle between those that favoured reform and the detractors intensified, until persecution became relentless under the mandate of Inquisitor General Fernando de Valdés. The power struggle did not catch Constantino by surprise, but the tables turned faster than he had expected. On 1 August 1558 Constantino preached his last sermon in the cathedral of Seville; fifteen days later he was imprisoned. Constantinos evangelising zeal is evident in all his works, but the core of his theology can be found in Beatus Vir, where he deals with the doctrines of sin and pardon, free grace, providence, predestination, and the relationship between faith and works. In his exposition of Psalm 1, Constantino does not resort to human philosophies but associates the spiritual fall of humanity with ugliness. In his exhortation to the reader, he states: we shall plainly see the repulsiveness of that which seems so good in the eyes of insane men, and the beauty and greatness of that which the Divine Word has promised and assured those who turn to its counsel.

At the Synod of Dordrecht (161819), the deep questions of justification and faith, election and rejection, time and eternity, grace and free will, the individual and the body of Christ, Israel and the church, the acquisition of salvation through Christ and its application by His Spirit, baptism and regeneration, and especially the precise relationship between these, were at stake. These deep questions are addressed in this study. Lines are drawn to the historical, theological and political context of the time of the synod. Patristics and the Middle Ages are not absent, nor are the metaphysical questions related to these theological issues. Also the church polity of Dordt is discussed, especially the roots, influences and structures of its church order. This volume ends with a hermeneutical reflection on the way we confess the electing God today.

John Calvin's understanding of works-righteousness is more complex than is often recognized. While he denounces it in some instances, he affirms it in others. This study shows that Calvin affirms works-righteousness within the context where faith-righteousness is already established, and that he even teaches a form of justification by works. Calvin ascribes not only a positive role to good works in relation to divine acceptance, but also soteriological value to believers' good works. This study demonstrates such by exploring Calvin's theological anthropology, his understanding of divine-human activity, his teaching on the nature of good works, and his understanding of divine grace and benevolence. It also addresses current debates in Calvin scholarship by exploring topics such as union with Christ, the relation between justification and sanctification, the relation between good works and divine acceptance, the role of good works in the Christian life, and the content of good works.

Although the Petersens' name is quite known among specialists of Pietism, their work, their ideas and the development of their thoughts remain mostly unresearched. Elisa Belucci aims to shed more light on her works, analyzing and interpreting them in relationship to the theological and socio-political context. In so doing, she fills some gaps present in the research on these authors: firstly, she analyzes the positions presented in the Petersens' work until 1703 at length; secondly, she tries to unearth sources and influences; Thirdly, she seeks to comment on the Petersens' ideas and positions in relationship to the historical context. The result is an entangled picture which questions the traditional distinction between church Pietism and radical Pietism, orthodoxy and radicalism/separatism, showing, instead, that these categories are sometimes too narrow to describe the position of certain authors , such as the Petersens.

So erschließen sich Kontinuität und Differenziertheit des göttlichen Redens vom Alten bis zum Neuen Bund (Hebr 1,1f). Dabei ist die wenig gewürdigte Logik der Aufhebung (10,9b; 8,13a; 11,40) grundlegend. Vor diesem Hintergrund lässt sich die sprachförmige Christologie (zwischen Schöpfung und Eschatologie) ebenso rekonstruieren wie der wortbezogene Glaube (11,1) in Relation auf die verschiedenen Gestalten göttlicher Rede sowie auch das Verhältnis von Wort und Glaube in ihrer Geschichte im Alten Testament (11,4-38). Diese führt zu einer ausgeformten Eschatologie des sich vollendenden Wortes, und sie erlaubt schließlich die für den Hebräerbrief spezifische "Typologie" als Gottes Sich-Entsprechen im heilsgeschichtlichen Weiterreden in ihrer sprachlichen Logik zu verstehen.

The Lutheran "orthodoxy" asserts its firm place in the post-Reformation church and theological history. In contrast to Pietism and the Enlightenment, there was a historically comprehensible quantity called "Orthodoxy", which - so the assumption continues - embodied all that, against which Pietists and Enlightenmentists then stepped in their place in the best Reformation tradition and with increasing success. This antagonism and the underlying developmental teleologism are demonstrably due to the positional ties and theological-political concerns of historiographical drafts that are still effective today, such as those according to G. Arnold, for example, LT Spittler, GJ Planck, K. Hase, F. Chr. Baur, A. Tholuck and finally by E. Troeltsch. In view of this, the career of the relevant category is traced as a central idea, construction and counter-concept and analyzed by merging institutional-theoretical, theological-historical and conceptual-historical approaches in order to question its historical resilience and scientific linguistic suitability.

There are five marked quotations from Psalms in the Gospel of Matthew. These are: (1) Ps 91:1–12 in Matt 4:6; (2) Ps 78:2 in Matt 13:35; (3) Ps 8:3 in Matt 21:16; (4) Ps 118:22–23 in Matt 21:42; and (5) Ps 110:1 in Matt 22:44. Piotr Herok argues that the investigated texts are related to each other not only by the presence of the introductory formulas, making clear that a given citation comes from Scripture, but also through mutual thematic convergence, concerning in various degrees king David, the temple, and the theme of Jesus’ identity. Thanks to the new literary context, in which the quotations are embedded, Matthew reinterprets them significantly while giving them a new dimension clearly distinguishing them from the rest of the psalm quotations found in his work. This aims at presenting Jesus as not only the Son of David, but first of all the Son of God.

In the light of the research undertaken in this book the author concludes that the so called "anti-Jewish" texts in Johannine Gospel are not directed against the Jews being an ethnic or religious community. The object of the polemic and attacks is not the entire Jewish nation across the span of all the ages but a group of the Jewish leaders or opponents to Jesus in the First Century AD. Looking through the prism of the aposynagogal polemics, one can notice that the state of tension between the Johannine community and the rabbinic Judaism is inter-Jewish, not anti-Jewish, in character. The source of the polemical language of the Fourth Gospel is the Christological discussion in the historical and sociological context (the Messianic confession, the excommunication from the Synagogue, the presence of Samaritans in the Johannine community, the struggle for the preservation of the identity).

Die alttestamentlichen Quellen der Visionen werden aufgezeigt und zur Entschlüsselung ihrer Symbolik genutzt. Auch die genaue Analyse des Aufbaus der Schrift wird zu einer wichtigen Lesehilfe. Die Spannungen innerhalb der Botschaft des Buchs werden klar benannt: Rigoristische Anforderungen an die Treue der Gemeinde neben bedingungsloser Einladung zu Gott, Theologie des Kreuzes neben blutigen Gewaltfantasien, Betonung der gnädigen Erwählung und die Bedeutung der Werke für das Urteil Christi. Doch es sind diese scheinbaren Widersprüche, die der Botschaft ihr besonderes Profil und Tiefenschärfe geben. Die Ermutigung zu einem Verhalten, das sich nicht von der Vergötterung menschlicher Macht verführen lässt, und zur Hoffnung auf den Sieg der gerechten und gnädigen Herrschaft Gottes hat bleibende Bedeutung auch für die Kirche heute.

Every entry has its English translation along with the number of occurrences of the Greek term in the Septuagint, parallel texts and in the New Testament with the sum of all occurrences in all the Bible. At the end of each entry the lexical forms of it are given and listed in alphabetical order with a grammatical analysis and occurrences throughout the Scriptures. In the dictionary, as it is in the concordance, four colours are given a new category of distinction. They separately characterize the texts and references of the Septuagint (green), parallel texts (red) and the New Testament (blue). The same colours are attributed to the number of appearances of the terms in the text. The terms are presented in the Dictionary firstly in basic form, then in all lexical forms arranged in alphabetical order.
