During their deployment they face enemy tanks, mines, and artillery as well as their own bureaucracy, petty jealousies, and one officer that fails to live up to his oath. Their superior officers make debatable decisions, and they are often unsupported. In the end, they find the support they need, the leadership they lack, and a comradeship comparable to historic units like the Band of Brothers, the Old Breed, Knights Templar, and Washington’s Immortals.

With an executive order from President Franklin Roosevelt in 1941, the United States Marine Corps - the last all-white branch of the U.S. military - was forced to begin recruiting and enlisting African Americans. The first black recruits received basic training at the segregated Camp Montford Point, adjacent to Camp Lejeune, near Jacksonville, North Carolina. This book, in conjunction with the documentary film of the same name, tells the story of these pioneering African American Marines. Drawing from interviews with 60 veterans, Melton McLaurin relates in the Marines' own words their reasons for enlisting; their arrival at Montford Point and the training they received there; their lives in a segregated military and in the Jim Crow South; their experiences of combat and service in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam; and, their legacy. The first monograph of one of Norway’s most important contemporary artists to be published in English. The work of the Norwegian artist Marianne Heske falls outside conventional categories of art. A 1971 visit to Marché aux Puces near the Porte de Montreuil in Paris would prove important for the artist. There, she found a box of papier-maché doll heads with a look reflecting the glamour of early twentieth-century film stars. These were to become an important metaphor in her artistic development. Heske soon began to create works that involved the dolls—assemblages, photographs, videos, and graphic works—and dolls became a central part of her oeuvre.

Marianne von Werefkin was not only a talented artist but also a shrewd free thinker and hostess: at the beginning of the twentieth century famous artists including Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter, Alfred Kubin, Adolf Erbslöh, Erma Bossi, Franz Marc and August Macke assembled in Marianne von Werefkin’s salon in the Schwabing district of Munich. After a long break from painting in order to further her companion Alexej Jawlensky, Werefkin returned to her own art in 1906 and created fascinating works in a new, expressive style. Descended from a family of Russian aristocrats, the artist was an important forerunner and co-founder of the “Neue Künstlervereinigung München” (Munich New Artist’s Association), from which the “Blauer Reiter” developed. In addition to the artist’s early works from Russia and the Expressionist pictures which resulted from her sojourns in the region around Murnau, the Werefkin specialist Brigitte Salmen presents an appreciation of the artist’s later work, which is less well known and which was created in Ascona, where she lived in exile in Switzerland.
