Harvard University Press Cratylus. Parmenides. Greater Hippias. Lesser Hippias
On names, forms, beauty, and lies.Plato, the great philosopher of Athens, was born in 427 BC. In early manhood an admirer of Socrates, he later founded the famous school of philosophy in the grove Academus. Much else recorded of his life is uncertain; that he left Athens for a time after Socrates’ execution is probable; that later he went to Cyrene, Egypt, and Sicily is possible; that he was wealthy is likely; that he was critical of “advanced” democracy is obvious. He lived to be 80 years old. Linguistic tests including those of computer science still try to establish the order of his extant philosophical dialogues, written in splendid prose and revealing Socrates’ mind fused with Plato’s thought. In Laches, Charmides, and Lysis, Socrates and others discuss separate ethical conceptions. Protagoras, Ion, and Meno discuss whether righteousness can be taught. In Gorgias, Socrates is estranged from his city’s thought, and his fate is impending. The Apology (not a dialogue), Crito, Euthyphro, and the unforgettable Phaedo relate the trial and death of Socrates and propound the immortality of the soul. In the famous Symposium and Phaedrus, written when Socrates was still alive, we find the origin and meaning of love. Cratylus discusses the nature of language. The great masterpiece in ten books, the Republic, concerns righteousness (and involves education, equality of the sexes, the structure of society, and abolition of slavery). Of the six so-called dialectical dialogues Euthydemus deals with philosophy; metaphysical Parmenides is about general concepts and absolute being; Theaetetus reasons about the theory of knowledge. Of its sequels, Sophist deals with not-being; Politicus with good and bad statesmanship and governments; Philebus with what is good. The Timaeus seeks the origin of the visible universe out of abstract geometrical elements. The unfinished Critias treats of lost Atlantis. Unfinished also is Plato’s last work, Laws, a critical discussion of principles of law which Plato thought the Greeks might accept. The Loeb Classical Library edition of Plato is in twelve volumes.

Penguin Books Ltd Heroides
In the twenty-one poems of the Heroides, Ovid gave voice to the heroines and heroes of epic and myth. These deeply moving literary epistles reveal the happiness and torment of love, as the writers tell of their pain at separation, forgiveness of infidelity or anger at betrayal. The faithful Penelope wonders at the suspiciously long absence of Ulysses, while Dido bitterly reproaches Aeneas for too eagerly leaving her bed to follow his destiny, and Sappho - the only historical figure portrayed here - describes her passion for the cruelly rejecting Phaon. In the poetic letters between Paris and Helen the lovers seem oblivious to the tragedy prophesied for them, while in another exchange the youthful Leander asserts his foolhardy eagerness to risk his life to be with his beloved Hero.

John Wiley & Sons Inc Bringing the PMBOK Guide to Life: A Companion for the Practicing Project Manager
Transform the PMBOK® Guide from a framework to a sharpened tool in your project manager's toolbox In project management circles, it's often joked that "there's the right way, the wrong way, and the PMBOK® way" to manage projects. In truth, it's really about the methodology you choose. The PMBOK® Guide is a consensus-based standard that thousands of project management professionals find immensely valuable in the process of developing an effective methodology. But exactly how does a project manager take the information provided in the PMBOK® Guide and apply it most effectively and appropriately to an actual project environment? This book can be the answer. It is basically a "guide to the guide"—a road map to applying the tools of the PMBOK® Guide to your organization's or project's unique nature and requirements. Bringing the PMBOK® Guide to Life: A Companion for the Practicing Project Manager builds a bridge between the PMBOK® Guide and the common needs of today's practicing project managers. It explains and elaborates on specific techniques, terms, and the application of tools that will enable project managers to effectively adapt the principles and processes described in the PMBOK® Guide to the practical world of project management. Readers will find suggested approaches for the use of project management tools and techniques along with templates developed directly from information provided in the PMBOK® Guide. Suggestions and study tips are also included to assist in preparing for the PMP exam, and a Project Plan Accelerator (PPA) can be used with the PMBOK® Guide by project managers and project teams to develop plans that are specifically tailored to meet the needs of your team, your clients, and your sponsoring organization. Written by two of the leading experts in the field, Bringing the PMBOK® to Life will help every project manager translate the PMBOK® Guide's tools and techniques into actionable, commonsense approaches to managing a project. Taylor & Francis Inc Maltreatment of Patients in Nursing Homes: There Is No Safe Place
Abuse, although often not detected or reported, existed in every facility we surveyed. It is a serious problem.Old, weak, and often cognitively impaired, nursing home patients can be easy targets for physical, psychological, material, and financial mistreatment at the hands of those entrusted with their care, safety, and well-being. Maltreatment of Patients in Nursing Homes: There Is No Safe Place examines the dark side of nursing homes, where not every employee has the commitment of Mother Theresa. This groundbreaking book applies criminological theory to help develop practical methods of controlling abuse and presents the results of the first and only nationwide study on the theft of patients’ belongings, a form of abuse too often ignored by the nursing home industry. Maltreatment of Patients in Nursing Homes surveys employees, administrators, and family members of patients in 47 nursing homes throughout the United States. Their responses provide invaluable insights on a wide range of topics, including the social and psychological factors that cause different types of abuse, characteristics of nursing home patients and employees, the bureaucracy of nursing homes, victimization rates, workforce issues of nursing home aides, and federal regulations for nursing homes. The information gained from the surveys forms the basis for detailed recommendations for creating a safer environment and reducing all forms of abuse, including theft-prevention training programs, background checks and improved screening of potential employees, education and advocacy for current staff, and the reform of federal regulations.Maltreatment of Patients in Nursing Homes examines: types of physical abuse (restraints, sexual abuse, neglect) the who, what, and why of nursing home theft types of financial abuse (trust accounts, bank accounts, improper charges for services and drugs, identity theft) types of psychological abuse (abandonment, segregation, childlike treatment, verbal abuse) effects of psychological abuse (depression, learned helplessness, psychiatric disorders) reasons for abuse by employees (staff turnover, job burnout, job dissatisfaction, caregiver stress) One of the few books to deal with abuse of the elderly outside a domestic setting, Maltreatment of Patients in Nursing Homes: There Is No Safe Place interprets and analyzes abuse to provide new ways of thinking about this growing problem and new methods of preventing it from growing any more widespread.
