The author of this book presents an innovative approach to the history of Nubia. The period covered includes the fall of Meroe and the rise of the united kingdom of Nobadia and Makuria. The emphasis was put on the analysis of social and political change/dynamics/transformations. Moreover some major improvements of the chronological nomenclature have been suggested. To date, it has been largely influenced by the early 20th cent. politically incorrect approach to African cultures and the contemporary state of research. The author implies that there is actually no reason which would compel modern scholars to study and describe the history of Nubia in other ways than the rest of the world. It means that all studies postdating this path-breaking book should be based on actual political changes and not vague racial or religious criteria. Nowadays we can be certain that after the fall of Meroe there was no political vacuum, but various political organisms immediately started to rise: Nobadia, Makuria and Alwa. For this reason the term 'Group X' should not be used any longer.

The book is a collection of articles dealing with various aspects of medieval Nubian literacy. It contains eleven articles by an international group of scholars, representing different areas of language studies (Greek and Latin epigraphy, Coptology, Old Nubian studies). The articles contain both editions of new textual finds and reconsiderations of well-known sources. The chronology of the texts discussed in the book spans a few hundred years of medieval Nubian history (from the 7th until the 15th century) and their topographical distribution covers a large part of the Middle Nile Valley (from Qasr Ibrim in the north to Banganarti in the south) and beyond (northern Kordofan). The typological variety of the sources, with epitaphs, sepulchral crosses, legal documents, visitors' inscriptions, and dipinti on pottery, provides an insight into the richness of the Christian Nubian civilization.

Premier recueil de législation ecclésiastique, la Collection canonique d'Antioche a surgi au IVe siècle au temps des premières controverses christologiques. Son auteur présumé, Euzoïos d'Antioche, fut la figure de proue de l'Église «semi-arienne», plus précisément homéenne, et bénéficia du soutien de l'empereur Valens. Composée en 370 dans le contexte brûlant de la querelle arienne qui déchire la chrétienté durant tout le IVe siècle, cette collection constitue à double titre un corpus de combat. Au plan politique, chacun des cinq groupes canoniques qui le composent est destiné à lutter et à condamner un ou plusieurs des courants doctrinaux opposés à l'Église homéenne. Au plan juridique, la législation de la Collection canonique d'Antioche s'organise autour de deux grands thèmes: le contrôle de la hiérarchie ecclésiastique et la lutte contre les mouvements rigoristes. Le présent ouvrage analyse cette oeuvre originelle qui consacra le long travail d'innovation dans le domaine du droit ecclésiastique, entamé par les ariens au lendemain du concile de Nicée (325). Ceux-ci souhaitaient promouvoir la législation conciliaire naissante qu'ils considéraient comme plus opérante pour uniformiser le droit ecclésiastique de la pars Orientis, et lutter contre leurs adversaires nicéens. Mais, après leur victoire en 379 due à l'avènement de Théodose, les nicéens furent amenés à reprendre à leur compte ce corpus: ne pas se l'approprier aurait contribué à la survivance des théories des homéens, laissant la possibilité d'une contre-offensive de leur part. Afin de neutraliser une telle arme, il convenait de se l'attribuer. Euzoïos d'Antioche et son Église étaient, certes, des vaincus de l'histoire, mais en créant la Collection canonique d'Antioche, ils avaient légué un héritage à l'ensemble de la chrétienté: la racine d'où allait croître, au-delà des controverses théologiques, le droit de l'Église.

En 523, la cité de Najran en Arabie du Sud est le théâtre d'événements sanglants. Le roi des Himyarites Dounaas s'est rendu indépendant de l'Éthiopie. Juif de religion, il persécute les chrétiens de son royaume et massacre ceux de Najran avec, à leur tête, Aréthas. Peu après, le roi d'Éthiopie Élesbaas organise une expédition punitive, tue Dounaas et rétablit le christianisme dans le pays d'Himyar. Parmi les documents qui font connaître cet épisode si important pour l'histoire religieuse et politique de l'Arabie au VIe s., le Martyre grec de saint Aréthas et de ses compagnons occupe une place insigne. Il fait ici pour la première fois l'objet d'une édition critique utilisant la trentaine de manuscrits grecs qui le transmettent, avec une étude sur sa genèse et son histoire, ainsi qu'une traduction en français.

Viminacium, capitale de la province de Mésie Supérieure, occupait un carrefour stratégique sur le Danube, à la frontière nord de l'Empire romain. La ville tomba en 441 sous les coups des Huns; toutefois, après le rétablissement de l'autorité byzantine dans la région au début du VIe siècle, elle assuma à nouveau son rôle de poste avancé de l'Empire sur la route conduisant au coeur de l'Illyricum. Les nécropoles de l'époque des Grandes Migrations mises à jour à Viminacium témoignent de l'installation des barbares germaniques sur ce site à partir du Ve siècle, mais aussi de leur engagement graduel dans le système défensif du limes septentrional de l'Empire d'Orient. Ce livre présente une analyse systématique du mobilier funéraire de ces nécropoles. Grâce à une confrontation avec les découvertes provenant d'autres sites, elle révèle l'existence de deux groupes distincts dans la population «barbare» de Viminacium: les Germains danubiens orientaux, qui vécurent et moururent là au Ve siècle, et les Germains occidentaux ou septentrionaux qui s'installèrent dans la région peu après 500 ou aux environs de cette date. Les découvertes archéologiques montrent le haut degré de militarisation de ce second groupe au service de l'Empire et illuminent les conditions matérielles d'un processus migratoire décisif dans l'histoire européenne.

III), nel suo opuscolo sulla metatio, ovvero distribuzione di un terreno fra i reparti di un esercito romano. L’interesse che diversi studiosi hanno mostrato per l’opuscolo anche in tempi assai recenti, fraintendendone purtroppo, come già in passato, qua e là i messaggi, ha spinto Grillone ad offrire questa nuova edizione con traduzione italiana a fronte, corredata di osservazioni linguistiche e di chiarimenti, per consentire un’immediata comprensione di quanto era stato travisato: posizione della groma nel rispetto della simmetria; individuazione di destra e sinistra nella pianta del campo; metodo di distribuzione dello spazio ai reparti; disposizione delle coorti legionarie nella zona anteriore e di alcuni reparti nella zona centrale; infine fortificazioni a quarto di cilindro (claviculae), erette verso l’esterno in corrispondenza delle quattro porte e ognuna accompagnata da una fossa (titulum). This book aims at presenting military gromatic information from the only extent ancient author writing on those questions, ps. Hyginus (IIIth A.C.) who wrote a work about metatio (land distribution to the troops of the Roman army). Several scholars studied this book until very recently, but generally misunderstood vital points. The present edition an Italian translation mainly studies linguistic questions in order to reassess the debated points: the groma’s dispositioning according to the symmetry; the right and left side of a camp’s map; the distribution of troops within the camp; the disposition of cohortes legionariae in front and of some troops in the central part of the camp; finally the fortifications in the form of a quarter of a cylinder (claviculae), built out of the wall starting from the jamb of the four doors, and a small excavation next each of them (titulum). The present book studies the original text and meaning of the de metatione castrorum by proposing a new restitution and a critical apparatus, a translation, an exhaustive preface with explanations about linguistic and textual problems, a commentary, a chapter about the historical evolution of the text from the first edition to the present one and by a Tabula discrepantium.

Das Husserlbild der Gegenwart ist noch weitgehend gepragt von den erkenntnistheoretischen "Logischen Untersuchungen", durch die Husserl in weitem MaBe als Begriinder einer neuen objektiven Logik gilt. Mitunter wird er sogar als einseitig orien- tierter Rationalist und Aufklarer des 20. J ahrhunderts, als der "Cartesius unserer Tage" 1 angesehen. Dieses Bild Husserls kann wohl jederzeit durch seine Veroffent- lichungen gerechtfertigt werden. Dennoch ist es einseitig und recht vordergriindig, da dabei voll und ganz iibersehen wird, daB auch der Bereich des Emotionalen flir HusserI ein entscheiden- gut wie nichts des Interessengebiet darstellt, wovon bislang so veroffentlicht worden ist. Wohl werden in seinen Schriften gclegentlich Fragen der Wertlehre, der Asthetik und Ethik angeschnitten 2, aber eine eingehende Auseinandersetzung mit derartigen Fragen liegt in keinem der veroffentlichten Werke vor. In Wirklichkeit aber war ihm die Begriindung einer echten wissenschaftlichen Ethik immer ein ernstes philosophisches An- liegen.
