Occasionally zany zoological lore.Aelian (Claudius Aelianus), a Roman born ca. AD 170 at Praeneste, was a pupil of the rhetorician Pausanias of Caesarea, and taught and practiced rhetoric. Expert in Attic Greek, he became a serious scholar and studied history under the patronage of the Roman empress Julia Domna. He apparently spent all his life in Italy where he died after AD 230.Aelian’s On the Characteristics of Animals, in 17 books, is a collection of facts and beliefs concerning the habits of animals drawn from Greek authors and some personal observation. Fact, fancy, legend, stories, and gossip all play their part in a narrative that is meant to entertain. If there is any ethical motive, it is that the virtues of untaught yet reasoning animals can be a lesson to thoughtless and selfish mankind. The Loeb Classical Library edition of this work is in three volumes.The Historical Miscellany (LCL 486) is of similar nature. In 14 books, it consists mainly of historical and biographical anecdotes and retellings of legendary events. Cet ouvrage s'inscrit dans une suite de travaux consacrés aux populations forestières d'Afrique centrale et, parmi elles, plus particulièrement aux Pygmées Aka. L'intérêt de l'étude de cette population réside dans le caractère très particulier de sa situation linguistique, sociale et politique. Cette ethnie parle une langue qui aujourd'hui lui est propre, bien que manifestement empruntée à un moment de son histoire à un groupe de Grands Noirs (bantu C 10), mais les conditions de relations avec son voisinage modifient constamment sa situation linguistique. Chasseurs-collecteurs, ils ont une parfaite connaissance de leur milieu forestier auquel ils présentent, de toutes les populations forestières locales, la plus harmonieuse adaptation. Cependant, ces "maîtres de la forêt", reconnus comme tels par tous, n'auraient pas de vocabulaire propre de leur domaine, si l'on en croit leur appartenance linguistique. L'origine non forestière des populations environnantes, auxquelles ils devraient leur nomenclature, rend cette hypothèse inconcevable. L'examen comparatif de leur vocabulaire éclaire la question d'un jour différent. De nos jours leur forêt, de plus en plus dévastée par une exploitation abusive, ne leur offre plus qu'un aléatoire et précaire refuge. Les relations d'échange assez égalitaires qu'ils entretenaient depuis des temps immémoriaux avec les Grands Noirs se sont récemment modifiées à leur désavantage. Engagés malgré eux dans un processus socio-économique contraignant, ils s'acheminent vers un statut de sous-prolétariat exploité et déconsidéré. Ils restent pourtant les ultimes témoins d'une des dernières civilisations où l'homme sait exploiter la nature pour en vivre, sans la détruire.

The edition is a diplomatic edition based on the text of the Arabic version of IV Ezra as found in the unique tenth-century manuscript Ms Mt Sinai Arabic Codex 589 which contains the full text of this version. It is a translation of a Syriac text closely related to the sole survivor in Ms Milan, Ambrosian Library, B. 21 Inf. It is not identical with any of the other known Arabic versions of IV Ezra, which appear to have been translated from the Greek. The introduction to the edition contains a description of the manuscript, a discussion of its orthography and its scribal mistakes and of the adopted method of text edition. The translation is an annotated translation. The introduction deals among others with the relation between the Syriac version of IV Ezra and its Arabic translation, the fragment in Ms Berol. Sprenger 30 (Ahlwardt 9434), the relation between the Arabic version of IV Ezra and the Arabic version of the Apocalypse of Baruch in the same manuscript and the occurence of Middle Arabic elements in the text.

Among biblical wisdom literature the Book of Qohelet is well known for its idiosyncratic ideas. Also from a linguistic point of view, however, this book is a maverick in the Bible. Its language is difficult and puzzling. In most commentaries some linguistic pecularities of Qohelet have received due attention and more recently studies on the language of the book have appeared. The present monograph presents an inventory and a thorough study of those peculiarities in the format of a grammar: orthography, phonetics, morphology and syntax. Against some recent challenges the author defends the general consensus among critical scholars that the language of Qohelet is definitely late in the development of Biblical Hebrew. He accepts the presence of a number of Aramaisms, but rejects the Aramaic translation theory. Also Dahood's "Phoenician" theory is discussed in detail and rejected. The whole research is done in a continuous dialogue with linguistic and exegetical literature on Qohelet, as can be seen from the extensive bibliography. The second part of this study - on the vocabulary of Qohelet - has been published as Orientalia Lovaniensia Analecta 143.

This thematic volume comprises 30 articles by 44 specialists and is the first collection solely dedicated to the study of Amphoras of the Phoenician-Punic world. The articles take their lead from presentations at a conference held in Ghent in December 2016. It is a welcome update to the terrain covered more than a quarter-century ago by the highly influential monograph of Juan Ramon, Las ánforas fenicio-púnicas del Mediterráneo Central y Occidental (Col·lecció Instrumenta 2), Barcelona: 1995. The link between trade and the Phoenician and Punic World is so pronounced that these subjects have often been treated synonymously. It is, therefore, hardly surprising that “the Amphora, the key element of the trade in foodstuffs during Antiquity, has been considered the guide fossil for Phoenician and Punic trade”. Geographically, the present contributions cover the space from the Levantine coast to the Atlantic shores of the Iberian Peninsula. Chronologically, they range from the earliest moments of the Phoenician presence in the western Mediterranean during the ninth century BCE until the centuries following the destruction of Carthage and its empire. Thematically, the volume deals with issues of production, typology, distribution, contents, and even socio-economical aspects. As such, it may be considered as a true state of the art on the Amphoras of the Phoenician and Punic World.

The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford. These papers range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

Stephen Mitchell's Anatolia (1993) and Karl Strobel's Die Galater (1996) were by no means end points for the study of Hellenistic and Roman Galatia. Rather, they stimulated several new research initiatives. The introduction to this volume synthesises the results of some 700 mostly very recent scholarly publications, before ten case studies explore new trends in military, political, cultural and religious history. Methodologically refined approaches to the fragmentary literary sources have nuanced our understanding of the Galatians’ migration, settlement, state formation, warfare and diplomacy. Investigations into the Galatians as the object of Attalid and Seleukid propaganda are complemented by studies into their political agency as independent tribes with varying objectives. For the Roman period, Greek inscriptions available in constantly growing numbers, besides coinage and other archaeological data, allow for a nuanced understanding of what provincialisation meant in practice: the loss of political autonomy was immediate (25 BC), as was the foundation of colonies in Pisidia; a landscape of monumentalised cities in the heartland of Galatia followed only slowly in the course of the next century. Cultic innovation was also diverse: the temple for the goddess Roma and the god Augustus was constructed in Ankyra from 5 BC to AD 14, whereas traditional Hellenistic-Phrygian cults densely resurface in the epigraphic evidence of the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Interest in Paul's evangelisation of Asia Minor has been the catalyst of scholarly interest in the Galatians since the 4th century. Two studies devoted to the historical context of Paul's Letter to the Galatians try to connect the bulk of Pauline scholarship with latest research on urbanisation, ethnic constructs and spatial conceptions in the Graeco-Roman world, to lift discussions to a new level.

The so-called Lectura Thomasina, a commentary on Peter Lombard’s Sentences, was composed by the Dominican William of Peter of Godin at the beginning of the 14th century. The manuscript tradition provides the text with the title ‘Thomasina’ because of the large number of verbatim quotations from Aquinas’ writings. This text is not a mere compilation of Aquinas’ dicta, but represents an attempt to outline the fundamental elements of Thomas’ doctrine, giving them both unity and coherence. For this reason, Godin’s commentary is an important witness to the reception of Aquinas’ texts during the period between his death and his canonization. The critical edition of the Lectura Thomasina, presented here for the first time, is based on an examination of the entire manuscript tradition and is accompanied by an historical and philological introduction. The first half of the second book (dist. 1-22), edited in the present volume, covers a number of topics (e.g., the eternity of the world, the principle of individuation, or the soul-body problem) which have been the subject of a lively debate between Thomists and anti-Thomists in the late 13th and early 14th century.

Mysticism is all about love. Mystics love God and want to get in touch with Him. To this end, they follow a tortuous path through the intimacy of their own souls, driven by desire. The Lord may not be the easiest of lovers, but this does not prevent them from longing for Him. In fact, his perceived absence, physical and even mental, makes their love burn all the fiercer. And this burning love is far from thoughtless. The difficulty of loving God is precisely one of the main reasons why mystics have always felt the need to reflect profoundly upon their relationship with Him. The mystical canon testifies in various ways to its authors’ extensive and diversified thinking on their intense spiritual love lives. And these reflections all have their elaborate, subtle theories of love. It is from this perspective that the contributions to this volume approach several important works in the Christian mystical tradition, from the Seven Ways of Minne by Beatrice of Nazareth, via Novalis’s Hymns to the Night, to the Prologue by Simone Weil. These writings are examined for their specific theoretical schemes and backgrounds. At the same time, the question is also dealt with how the theory and the experience of love relate to one another in these texts. Investigations of the reflections on this topic by modern thinkers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Michel Foucault round off this exploration of mysticism and its love theories.

The book is a publication of nearly one thousand wall inscriptions preserved in the so-called Upper Church at Banganarti (Sudanese Nubia), discovered by a Polish expedition between 2001 and 2006. In overwhelming majority, the inscriptions are mementos left by people who visited this cult place to pay homage to its patron, Archangel Raphael, and to ask him or God through his intermediary for various benefactions. Written in either Greek or Old Nubian, and frequently displaying a sophisticated graphic and literary form, they cast an interesting light on different aspects of social, cultural, and religious life of the Christian Nubian Kingdom of Makuria towards the end of its existence (twelfth-fourteenth centuries). The catalogue of inscriptions is complemented by a study addressing general questions provoked by the texts. The book is richly illustrated with plans, photographs and drawings.

Si les rabbins de l'antiquité ne cherchent pas à faire rire dans leurs textes, leur sens de l'humour ne passe pas inaperçu. Bien que préoccupés principalement par la halakha, les tanna'im n'avaient pas moins d'humour que leurs successeurs, les amora'im. L'étude exhaustive des récits humoristiques dans la Mishna et la Tosefta permet de développer de nouvelles perspectives sur ces textes (parfois énigmatiques) et leurs protagonistes, tout particulièrement sur les polémiques internes et externes au mouvement rabbinique, les traits de caractère de certains sages et leur manière d'étudier et de penser, ainsi que l'évolution de l'humour entre les différents corpus rabbiniques (Talmud compris). L'humour juif trouve donc probablement ses premières manifestations dans l'humour complexe et varié des tanna'im.

Romano Guardini est l’un des premiers à se rendre compte des paradoxes modernes de la liturgie, de la formation et de leurs rapports. Si la liturgie possède une puissance formatrice, réclamant de l’être humain le meilleur de son humanité – notamment son unité fondamentale d’âme incarnée et de corps animé, son élégance expressive dans le rapport aux objets qui en prolongent le dynamisme et son enracinement communautaire concret, le sujet qui désire y entrer doit être soigneusement initié dès l’enfance. On ne soulignera jamais de façon adéquate la tension vivante entre l’identité et la différence, façonnée par l’appartenance à une collectivité et par la relation avec le monde. Ainsi, former à la liturgie sera toujours former l’être humain dans son identité et dans ses rapports; de même que se laisser former par la liturgie sera toujours un approfondissement de la dialectique qui identifie et différencie la religion avec la culture. Jusqu’à aujourd’hui, personne n’a saisi mieux que Guardini le véritable défi de la formation à la liturgie ainsi que les authentiques possibilités formatives de l’action liturgique.

Les neuf études de ce volume portent sur le Commentaire à la Métaphysique d’Aristote, écrit au tournant des IIe et IIIe siècles par Alexandre d’Aphrodise. Elles ont été suscitées par le colloque international « Alexandre d'Aphrodise et la métaphysique aristotélicienne », tenu en l’Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, les 22, 23 et 24 juin 2015. La question de la réception en constitue le sujet : réception de la Métaphysique par Alexandre, réception par la tradition ultérieure de son exégèse. Le commentaire d’Alexandre fixe, en effet, la compréhension du texte d’Aristote à partir du IIIe siècle ; il servira de référence à toutes les interprétations ultérieures, néoplatoniciennes, arabes et latines. Ces études mettent en évidence les rapports complexes entre logique, physique, philosophie première et même éthique, établis par le commentaire d’Alexandre. On peut s’interroger sur la pertinence aujourd’hui d’un texte qui s’intéresse à la tenue lors des assemblées de prière et semble viser surtout les femmes. Le difficile passage de 1 Co 11,2-16 a pu inspirer les deux voies d’interprétation suggérées par le titre : Paul misogyne ou chantre de l’émancipation féminine. L’auteur a voulu lire rigoureusement le texte, sans parti-pris, pour élucider tout ce que les expressions et mots obscurs de ce passage controversé peuvent signifier. Une telle entreprise exigeait de tenir compte de tout le texte sans en occulter quoi que ce soit, tout en tentant de comprendre le contexte et l’enjeu communautaire. Cette étude, qui départage dans le texte les pratiques que Paul cherche à promouvoir et les principes ou arguments qu’il utilise pour les appuyer, permet de discerner deux lignes argumentatives contrastées. Celles-ci révèlent l’attitude pastorale de Paul et sa reconnaissance du rôle de la femme « dans le Seigneur ». One can wonder how a passage addressing people’s hair or headdress – and as it seems mostly women’s – at prayer meetings can be relevant nowadays. This difficult passage (1 Co 11:2-16) has been read either as a proof of Paul’s sexism or as promoting women’s liberation. The author has tried to read this text rigourously, without any preconceived bias in as much as it is possible, to elucidate the meaning behind its many obscure words and expressions. This rather modest goal required taking into account the whole text, without leaving aside any controversial part, as well as trying to grasp its context and ecclesial dimension. Distinguishing within the text its sections where Paul tries to promote specific practices and those articulating the principles or arguments used to justify them, has revealed two distinct lines of arguments. Those show, as well as Paul’s pastoral stance, his positive attitude towards the role of women.

Existing literature on the subject has pointed out that the sense of belonging generated by nineteenth-century nationalism often replaced religions in their public role of shaping common identity. In fact, religions did not get secluded into the private sphere but kept playing a role in the national discourse. A difference need nevertheless be detected between majority and minority religion. If the former could present itself as a societal cohesive factor, the latter has a more complicated task. The contributions in this volume reconstruct the adaptation strategies of nineteenth-century Catholic, Jewish and Protestant minorities in Europe as determined both by national contexts and internal dynamics. The two recurrent strategies of accommodation and confrontation took place in several forms and stages. The volume aims therefore at reconstructing the position of religious minorities in different European contexts (United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy) in the period 1815-1914 but also at reassessing the concept of `religious minority’ as a factor of cultural change.

Based on the examples of Jeremiah 1 and 10, this volume contains contributions of the textual reception and of the exegesis of both chapters. Although textual history and reception history are to be distinguished from each other, they are interconnected, as the textual history of any biblical book is also part of its reception history. Jeremiah 1 and 10 are ideal "test cases" because their textual traditions (MT-Jer and LXX-Jer and its Hebrew Vorlage respectively) differ most significantly in terms of rhetoric, structure and content. The volume demonstrates how the Jeremiah's reception history helps to better understand the textual history of both chapters.

Njáls Saga is universally recognised as the greatest and most complex of all the sagas of Icelanders (Íslendingasögur). The originality with which the writer composed his narrative has led to its being likened to a novel created by an author who certainly used sources, although identifying which parts of the saga descend from oral, and which from written sources has proved difficult. The `Christian background’ of the title of this study refers to the ecclesiastical texts (including Scripture and its exegesis, church liturgy and the liturgical year, and hagiographical and apocryphal writings) which, it is argued, were used by the author of Njáls saga as he both created a bipartite structure, using familiar Christian metaphors to help unify the work; and developed his central thematic concern: that good legal judgement depends upon justice and mercy acting together, as in divine judgement. It is this which finally redeems Skarpheðinn Njálsson.

Although there are specialist studies on the mobility of the inhabitants of the cities and regions of the Black Sea, we lack a comprehensive prosopography of those of them active abroad. This work, containing 3358 entries, is a first attempt, casting light on the mobility of different social and professional groups, not only mercenaries and merchants but also itinerant philosophers and artists. It demonstrates that the Black Sea was well integrated into the main circles of the Greek, Roman and Early Byzantine world. Chronologically, the work starts with the earliest attestations and finishes with the end of the 6th century AD. It includes not only people attested by external documents but also persons mentioned by internal inscriptions as having travelled or died outside their country. The area of investigation covers the entire Black Sea coast. The Prosopographia Ptolemaica is used as a model. Each entry follows a set form: name; family relationships (father/mother, son/daughter, brother/sister); type of inscription or category of papyrus; profession or further data on the person's activity; form of the ethnic; dating; testimonies and bibliographical references. For each heading the geographical order of attestations is that of the SEG. There are very detailed indexes (names, cases of double or multiple citizenship, proxenies or other honours awarded abroad, professional categories, etc.).

Only recently have studies of the synoptic problem begun to ground their assessments of literary dependence in ancient literary conventions. In an effort to appreciate more fully the evangelists' modus operandi, this study examines their appeal to Greco-Roman rhetoric, the "science of speaking well". Focusing on a rhetorical form called the chreia, the book examines rhetorical techniques and reasons for chreia adaptation, particularly reasons why authors changed this form, both in theory and in the practice of the Hellenistic authors Plutarch and Josephus. With these reasons in mind, the study assesses literary dependence among the synoic gospels, examining in detail a Triple Tradition and Double Tradition _chreia_. In the end, this work illustrates that hypotheses of Markan priority, like the Farrer Hypothesis and Two-Document Hypothesis, are more rhetorically plausible than hypotheses of Matthean priority. Si la faute a fait l'objet d'etudes en lien avec la tragedie, le theme de l'infraction (recouvrant, plus largement, erreur et faute) reste peu etudie dans l'oeuvre de Thucydide. Comment l'historien, qui affirme presenter les faits sans filtre, aborde-t-il cette question a une epoque ou les notions de responsabilite et de culpabilite font l'objet d'une reevaluation? Cette etude demontre la place que prend l'erreur dans la perspective didactique de l'oeuvre. L'etude lexicale des termes exprimant l'infraction (hamartanein et adikein) etablit ainsi leurs nuances d'emploi, en particulier dans les relations entre cites. Les jeux, flottements ou distorsions imposes a cette distinction dans les nombreux discours de l'oeuvre sont egalement mis au jour. Enfin, ces manipulations etant recurrentes, la forme elle-meme du discours, en tant que vecteur de l'erreur, se voit examinee. Ce faisant, cet ouvrage questionne l'intention de Thucydide dans la construction de l'oeuvre.

Vilvoorde City, meer bepaald in de Far-West bundelt de resultaten van het studieproject 'Sociale huisvesting in Vlaams-Brabant' in opdracht van het provinciebestuur. Het werd door Amsab-Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis uitgevoerd in het kader van het onderzoeksprogramma 'Accenten uit de geschiedenis van Vlaams-Brabant'. Amsab-ISG koos voor een diepgaande studie van de wijk Far-West in Vilvoorde. De kern van deze buurt is de tuinwijk Maurits Duche. In 1921 gaf de sociale huisvestingsmaatschappij De Vilvoordse Haard de opdracht tot de bouw van een nieuwe wijk. Die ontwikkelde zich al snel tot een hechte gemeenschap waar cafes en sport een belangrijke plaats innamen.Tuinwijken waren zeer populair toen Belgie na de Eerste Wereldoorlog oplossingen moest zoeken voor het ernstig woningtekort. Het idee kwam uit Engeland waar Ebenezer Howard in 1902 de term 'tuinsteden' introduceerde in zijn werk Garden Cities of To-Morrow. Vanuit een utopische visie pleitte hij voor nieuwe geplande steden omgeven door landbouwgebied en groen. Toen na de Eerste Wereldoorlog meer dan 100.0 00 huizen moesten worden heropgebouwd in Belgie, zagen socialistisch en modernistisch geinspireerde architecten het heil in tuinwijken, de afgeslankte versie van tuinsteden. De opdrachtgevers waren vooral cooperatieve huurdersverenigingen en sociale huisvestingsmaatschappijen. In drie hoofdstukken krijgt de lezer een historisch overzicht van het ontstaan van de Far-West tot de uitbreiding ervan vandaag. Het archiefmateriaal bood dikwijls verrassende details die het verleden weer springlevend maakten. De wijk is echter meer dan een geografische afbakening van een stuk grond. Het is ook een verzameling van persoonlijke ervaringen en geschiedenissen. Daarom bundelt het vierde hoofdstuk niet alleen herinneringen aan het leven in de wijk van vroeger, maar ook getuigenissen van jonge bewoners nu. Hierdoor werden zij actief betrokken bij de geschiedenis van de eigen wijk, die tenslotte nog steeds verder evolueert. Fotograaf Piet Janssens gaf zijn eigen interpretatie van het verhaal van de Far-West. Dat resulteerde in een kleurrijke reeks beelden.

Les recits qui mettent en scene le desir incestueux d'un pere s'inaugurent en revanche par la desintegration; le destin de la jeune fille la menera peut-etre vers l'insertion sociale, encore que celle-ci ne s'avere jamais definitive. L'integration devient tout a fait impossible dans les cas d'inceste entre mere et fils: le desordre finit par entrainer l'effacement total du sujet. En guise de contrepoids, d'autres 'uvres abordent la relation avec une femme mure: l'itineraire de l'adolescent procede d'un manque initial mais aboutit a l'epanouissement. C'est sur les mutations et les bouleversements, les jeux de l'unite et de la division, de l'equilibre et du desordre qu'Agata Sobczyk se concentre.

Les douze chapitres de ce livre tournent autour de deux pôles, Aristote d'une part, la doxographie de l'autre. La doxographie, genre philosophiquement et historiographiquement sous-évalué, se situe au croisement de questions essentielles tant pour la reconstruction technique des systèmes perdus (notamment présocratiques), que pour la question générale de la lecture des textes philosophiques. Elle constitue un fascinant dépôt laissé par un double questionnement fondamental, en direction de l'histoire d'une part (que fut-il dit ?), et de la vérité d'autre part (que doit-on dire ?). Les deux points de vue sont irréductibles l'un à l'autre ; tôt ou tard, ils entrent en conflit, plus ou moins vivement, mais sans qu'une ultime résorption soit possible. Cette tension, fructueuse intellectuellement, pose aussi des problèmes techniques, quand il s'agit d'exploiter le matériel transmis. Le livre explore cette configuration à différents niveaux, à propos des Présocratiques (avec plusieurs études sur la lecture qu'Aristote, Théophraste, et les Placita faisaient de Thalès, de Parménides, ou d'Anaxagore), à propos d'Aristote lui-même, lu par Théophraste, à propos enfin des orientations de l'historiographie moderne de la philosophie ancienne. Nach der Publikation einer Sammlung weltlicher Frauenlieder des Spatmittelalters (Deutsche Frauenlieder des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts, Amsterdam: Editions Rodopi, 1999) legt Albrecht Classen nun eine uberraschend grosse Anzahl religioser Lieder vor, die von Frauen verfasst worden sind, womit endgultig der Beweis erbracht sein durfte, dass die Literaturgeschichte der Reformationszeit keineswegs nur von Werken mannlicher Autoren bestimmt war. Die Edition gliedert sich in zwei grosse Teile, von denen sich der erste mit religiosen Liederbuchern beschaftigt, die von Nonnen der sogenannten 'Heidekloster' (auf)geschrieben worden sind. Der zweite Teil bietet originelle Lieder von Frauen, die in einer breiten Palette von Kirchenliederbuchern oder privaten Gebets- und Gesangbuchern enthalten sind. Classen widmet Elisabeth Crucigerin ein gesondertes Kapitel, weil ihr Kirchenlied 'Herr Christ, der einig Gotts Sohn Vaters in Ewigkeit' das erste in Deutschland war, das von einer Frau verfasst und in ein protestantisches Kirchenliederbuch aufgenommen wurde. Bemerkenswerterweise gelingt es Classen daruber hinaus, die meisten der anderen Lieder historisch identifizierbaren Frauen zuzuschreiben, die jetzt in den Kanon spatmittelalterlicher deutscher Literatur aufgenommen werden mussen. Die Edition bietet ausserdem erschopfend Auskunft uber einige der Kloster, in denen die Liederbucher kompiliert wurden. Diese Edition durfte der Frauenforschung innerhalb der deutschen Literatur-, Musik-, und Religionsgeschichte neue Inspiration verleihen, weil die hier gesammelten Texte den klaren Beweis liefern, dass Frauen auf ihrem eigenen Gebiet und mit ihren eigenen Mitteln unabhangig von der mannlichen Vormundschaft schopferisch tatig werden konnten. Aufgrund der hier gesammelten Texte gilt es nun, das Netz unserer Spurensuche erheblich auszuweiten, denn offensichtlich gab es eine viel grossere Gruppe von Frauen im deutschen Spatmittelalter, die kunstlerisch und literarisch tatig war, als bisher vermutet worden ist.

Le present ouvrage est un recueil d'articles de J. Etienne, professeur de philosophie et de theologie morales a l'UCL, en l'honneur de son 75eme anniversaire. Le choix des articles et leur agencement dans une structure tripartite temoignent de la dynamique directrice de la vie et de la pensee de J. Etienne, a savoir une recherche ethique alimentee par la raison et motivee par la foi. C'est ainsi que la premiere partie, consacree aux sources philosophiques de la pensee de J. Etienne, rassemble diverses etudes qui vont de Platon a Ricoeur en passant par Bergson et Nabert; la seconde partie s'offre comme une mediation religieuse et theologique: elle reprend diverses contributions de J. Etienne sur le sacre, sur les relations entre la dynamique evangelique et la vie morale. La troisieme partie, quant a elle, fait se croiser ces deux sources de la reflexion morale que sont la raison et la foi sur des axes fondamentaux de la reflexion ethique ainsi que sur des thematiques plus actuelles: y sont abordes, entre autres, les rapports entre nature et culture, entre anthropologie et ethique, mais aussi les droits de l'homme, le droit d'ingerence, le respect aux mourants. Le recueil se termine par une bibliographie de J. Etienne. Comme un fil rouge qui traverse ce recueil, la mise en evidence du primat dialogue et de la raison sur la victoire privee de parole qu'est la violence, rappelle la capacite ethique qui habite tout etre humain et qui confere a sa liberte sa dignite.

La litterature sur la negation est tres abondante, mais il n'existe aucun ouvrage de synthese qui traite la negation en latin. Le present ouvrage vise d'abord a combler cette lacune. Il fournit un apercu de la problematique de la negation dans les domaines de la logique et de la linguistique. Il developpe une approche pragmatique qui considere la negation dans un cadre illocutoire oA' elle joue un role fonctionnel. A partir des donnees latines, cet ouvrage analyse le role des pronoms indefinis, les phenomenes de polarisation, les rapports entre negation et comparaison, negation et disjonction, ainsi que le fonctionnement argumentatif des adverbes et des connecteurs negatifs de la langue latine. L'ouvrage tente de mettre a jour la strategie argumentative qui s'appuie sur la negation dans l'expression de la concession et dans l'interrogation. Un chapitre est aussi consacre aux rapports entre negation et modalite. Cet ouvrage s'adresse aux latinistes, mais aussi aux specialistes de linguistique et aux philosophes du langage.
