In the depths of the Kara Kum desert in Turkmenistan, one of the largest deserts in the world, Victor Sarianidi has excavated the country of Margush (Margiana). Its capital was the city of Gonur, which consisted of a unique ensemble of temples and palaces dating from the end of the third to the beginning of the second millennia BC. In addition to the capital city, Sarianidi excavated the Gonur necropolis, with almost 3000 tombs. This is the largest necropolis of the period to have been excavated in the Near East. Th e funeral gifts and personal adornments from the Gonur tombs have an amazing, unique beauty and are worthy of comparison with the fi nest examples of ancient oriental art from Mesopotamia, Asia Minor and the Aegean world. Research in this area has made it possible to conclude that the first monotheistic religion in the world, Zoroastrianism, originated in Margiana. Th is statement is supported by the finds that related to the funeral rituals and procedures observed in the Gonur necropolis. The Margiana culture proved to be so highly advanced that scholars increasingly hold the view that Bronze Age Central Asia was one of the main civilizations of ancient times, alongside Mesopotamia, Egypt, India and China. The Archaeological Society of Athens is celebrating its 180th anniversary in December 2017 with the publication of a collection of photographs taken in the 1950s of major Greek Archaeological sites, most of which the Society has had a role in excavating and studying. The photographs were taken by the American photographer Robert McCabe primarily during his first two visits to Greece in 1954 and 1955. The sites represented include Athens, Delphi, Rhodes, Mycenae, Ancient Thera, Corinth, and Methoni. Many things that interested McCabe were things that the Greeks took for granted but he was seeing for the first time and wanted to record: the light and shadow revealing the shapes and masses of the ruins, the guard taking refuge from the noon-day sun, the lone figure of a woman on a deserted dirt road under the Acropolis–all take on symbolic meaning. a floor worn by water and millenniums of footsteps presents a play of shadows that dance to the whims of the sun. For perhaps the first time, a holistic account of the institution of the monarchy in modern Greece looks at the political behaviour of the Greek people and their relationship with authority in every form, to explore why this specific type of constitution was chosen in 1832 at the end of the Greek ‘Struggle for Independence’. Dimitris Manikas was born in 1938 on the island of Syros, in the Cyclades. He studied architecture at the Technischen Universität Wien, graduating in 1967. He worked as a freelance architect based in Vienna, frequently collaborating with architects both in Greece and internationally. Throughout his career he participated in architectural competitions in Greece, a mark of his attachment and constant bond with his birthplace: competitions included those for the Αcropolis Museum, for Syntagma Square, and Aristotelous Square in Thessaloniki. To mark his 80th birthday, Manakis gifted his complete archive to the Modern Greek Architecture collection of the Benaki Museum in Athens. Text in English, German and Greek.

The Basilica B’ in the archaeological site of Philippi dates back to the middle, approximately, of the sixth century AD and is an enigma in the history of architecture of the Justinian period of the Greek area. The present study attempts to clarify key issues of conflicting opinions that burden the relevant literature so far and to improve our knowledge on a number of unclear elements. In this context, the fact that the Basilica B’ was never completed as a building and did not function as a temple is documented, converging with the opinion of the excavator Paul Lemerle, while, at the same time, an attempt is made to determine the architect’s intentions regarding the design of the Basilica. Finally, the timeline of its construction phases is clarified and an attempt is made to determine the identity of the architect who undertook its design and construction.

Takis Tloupas was born in Thessaly, grandson of a coppersmith and son of a carpenter, and lived and worked there, in Larisa. He followed the profession of his father, and woodcarving brought him a comfortable living; until a trip to Palaios Pandeleimonas with the Mountaineering Club introduced Takis to photography. The club president was a keen amateur photographer who showed Takis his camera and how it worked. When Takis returned to Larisa he bought his first camera, and took his first photographs—of his sister, Avyi. During a trip to Paris in 1952, Takis made the decision to change his profession and on his return to Greece, he bought a Vespa scooter and began his journeys around Greece. He undertook commissions from the Forestry Inspectorate, the Mechanical Agriculture Department and the Red Cross. In 1960 the Vespa was replaced by a Deux Chevaux, and he continued to travel the whole of Greece, taking over 30,000 photographs of what he saw on his travels, of people and their lives. But it was Larisa that he photographed most as time went by, the city in which he was born and lived. This book is much more than an album of fine photographs. It demonstrates how Takis viewed nature and men through his cameras lens and provides us with the images of a world that the rest of us have not learned to see. 574 black and white photographs.

The Cypriot Collection of the National Archaeological Museum comprises about 850 artefacts, of which several were donated by various collectors in the late 19th and early 20th century, while others, formerly illegally owned, are the product of recent confiscations. For many centuries, chests were the only items of storage furniture to be found in the Greek home. Highly valued as a functional item, their connection with a wide range of everyday events and the most important stations in a person’s life (birth, marriage and death) gave the chest, from a very early date, a profound, symbolic meaning in the imagination of the Greek people. The important functional role of the chest is apparent in its decoration, which generally reflects beliefs and faith. These beliefs differ from place to place, and this can be seen in the different manner of decoration, which may also depend on general historic and social circumstances and events, as well as the artistic tradition of the region.
