Consisting of papers that have appeared recently in International Geology Review, Middle American Terranes, Potential Correlatives, and Orogenic Processes focuses on Middle American terranes in which tectonic processes, including flat-slab subduction, for orogenic development are examined at various times since the late Mesoproterozoic: at 1 Ga, through the Paleozoic, and into the Cenozoic. The book opens with an impressive article by Georg Kretschmar. The relationship and the increasing difference between Jews and Christians are determined by the way Jews and Christians have defined themselves against one another. Christians saw Jews as those who rejected Jesus, and therefore identified themselves in opposition to the Jews. The one and only Church, in origin Jewish and gentile became - by definition - anti-Jewish. One of the consequences was Auschwitz, for Jews a never-ending experience. The distinction between Jews and Christians is still present in modern definitions of Church. The problem remains: how can Jews and Christians be defined differently, and both be successors to the same tradition? The first edition published in 1999, was described as a "longed for addition to the literature", and as a text that "cannot be compared with any other book on vascular surgery" (Lancet 2000; 355: 1918). At the time it was different; a book to help busy clinicians sift through surgical research and use it to make sensible decisions for their clinical practice. The major temperate forage legumes are of global importance in the sustainable productivity of ruminant feed in the developed world. The purpose of this volume is to trace the development of the theoretical understanding of quark-gluon plasma, both in terms of theequation of state and thermal correlation functions and in terms ofits manifestation in high energy nuclear collisions. Who among us hasnot wondered how tall a mountain is on a neutron star, what happenswhen matter is heated and compressed to higher and higher densities,what happens when an object falls into a black hole, or what happenedeons ago in the early universe? The study of quark-gluon plasma is related in one way or another to these and other thought provoking questions. Oftentimes the most eloquent exposition is given in theoriginal papers. To this end a selection is made of what are themost important pioneering papers in this field. The early 1950s wasan era when high energy multiparticle production in cosmic rayinteractions attracted the attention of some of the brightest minds in physics, and so it should be no surprise that the first reprinted papers deal with the introduction of statistical models of particleproduction. The quark model arose in the 1960s, while QCD as suchwas recognized as the theory of the strong interactions in the1970's. The behavior of matter at high temperatures and supranucleardensities became of wide interest in the nuclear and particle physicscommunities starting in the 1970s, which is when the concept ofquark-gluon plasma became established. The history of the field hasbeen traced up to the early 1990s. There are three reasons forstopping at that point in time. First, most of the key theoreticalconcepts and formalisms arose before 1993, although many of themcontinue to be developed today and hopefully well into the future. Second, papers written after 1992 are much more readily availablethan those writen before due to the advent of the World Wide Web andits electronic preprint databases and journals. Finally, in makingthis collection of reprints available as hardcopy one is limited inthe number of pages, and some papers in the present selection shouldhave been deleted in order to make room for post-1993 papers. For thesame reason the subject focus must of necessity be limited, whichmeans that in this reprint collection two wide subject areas are not addressed: the behavior of nuclear matter under extreme conditionsis not reported, nor is quark matter in neutron stars. The broadcategories into which the material has been placed, reflect thediverse studies of quark-gluon plasma and its manifestation. They are: phase-space models of particle production, perturbative QCDplasma, lattice gauge theory, fluid dynamics and flow, strangeness, heavy flavor (charm), electromagnetic signals, parton cascade andminijets, parton energy loss and jet quenching, Hanbury Brown--Twiss(HBT) interferometry, disoriented chiral condensates, phasetransition dynamics and cosmology, and color superconductivity. Eachchapter is prefaced by an introduction, which contains a list ofsignificant papers which is more complete than the reprinted papers,though by no means exhaustive. It also contains citations to mostrelevant papers published up to the date of completion of this volume(fall 2002). It is hoped that the short reviews will help bring thereader up to date on the latest developments. The selection ofpapers cited in each chapter, and in particular the ones selected forreprinting, is solely the responsibility of the Editors. It is basedon their best judgement and experience in this field dating back tothe mid-1970s. In order to be reprinted a paper must have beenpioneering in the sense of originality and impact on the field.Generally they have been cited over a hundred times by other paperspublished in refereed journals. The final selection was reviewed anddiscussed among the Editors repeatedly. Just because a paper is not included does not mean they do not know of it or do not have a highregard for it. All of the papers cited or reprinted are originalresearch contributions. There are three other types of publicationslisted. The first is a compilation of books. The second is a listof reviews, many of which contain a significant amount of original material. Door de jaren, soms eeuwen heen hebben zij hun stem laten horen, en zijn zo een belangrijke sfeerbepalende factor geweest voor hun onmiddellijke omgeving. Vroeger bepaalden zij het ritme van de dag: niet alleen door middel van de uurslag, maar ook met bijvoorbeeld het Angelusluiden en het luiden voor de mis. Klokken hadden bovendien een signaalfunctie: bij het sluiten van de poort, bij brandalarm en bij gerechtelijke beslissingen werden respectievelijk de poortklok, de brandklok en de banklok geluid. Het belang van grote gebeurtenissen werd onderstreept met klokgelui of door het spelen op de beiaard. De maatschappelijke betekenis van klokken is nu veranderd. Al blijft de traditie van het klokkenluiden nog bestaan op zon- en feestdagen, de brandklok heeft haar functie verloren en ook het Angelusklokje wordt op steeds minder plaatsen gehoord. Veel kerken en kapellen worden geleidelijk gesloten, verlaten of verkocht. Hierdoor bestaat de kans dat klokken en torenuurwerken worden verwaarloosd of worden opgekocht door handelaars en antiquairs. In andere gevallen wil men bestaande installaties moderniseren of vervangen, wat vaak leidt tot vermindering of verarming van het klokkengelui. Hierdoor staan talloze historische mechanismen werkloos weg te roesten. Met deze uitgave publiceert Campanae Lovanienses haar inventaris van de klokken van Leuven. Het doel van de inventaris is het campanologisch erfgoed te beschermen en te bewaren voor toekomstige generaties. Hiervoor werden de klokken opgezocht, hun afmetingen en klankstructuur bepaald, en de versieringen vastgelegd met afwrijfsels en foto's. Het is de eerste publicatie in haar soort in ons land, een stevig opgebouwd en kwalitatief hoogstaand boekwerk dat zowel aantrekkelijk is voor campanologische specialisten als iedereen die het Leuvens erfgoed in zijn hart draagt.

This volume is the fruit of the twelfth LEST-conference (Leuven Encounters in Systematic Theology), which took place between 23 and 26 October 2019. The theme was “Theos & Polis: Political Theology as Discernment”. Current global challenges – climate change, extreme poverty, large refugee camps, violence and abuse, failing democracies and the rise of populism – were the starting point for choosing this conference theme. The choice of the theme was also influenced by the theo-political concerns of people in churches worldwide and of a new generation of junior scholars and students in theology: How to theologically understand and respond to political situations that affect faith communities? Though fairly distinct among Syriac manuscripts, the nearly twenty exemplars of the so-called Syriac “Masora” remain relatively unknown and often misunderstood. These handbooks were developed to help the reader pronounce, interpret, and compare words from across a spectrum of different sources: including works of patristics, theology, liturgy, and the Bible. Because earlier studies of this genre have focused, almost exclusively, on the biblical portions of these manuscripts, little has been known about the collections of excerpts from 255 patristic-era writings included in many of these handbooks. This volume is the first-ever study and transcription of over ten thousand excerpted ‘vocalized words and readings’ (šmohē w-qroyoto) from works attributed to Greek writers such as Ps.-Dionysius, Basil, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Severus of Antioch. This material has the potential to inform not only Syriac studies and Patristics, but the broader study of literacy and modes of learning in the Medieval Middle East.

This volume contains fifteen papers presented at the seventh British Patristics Conference, held in Cardiff (Wales, UK) from 5 to 7 September 2018. The theme of the conference was Religion in Late Antiquity. The papers address topics such as transformation and innovation, interrelations between religions, and between religions and other areas of culture: philosophy, education, politics and science. Some deal with aspects of the pre-history of religion in late antiquity, others with the reception of late-antique religion in later periods of history. Consequently, alongside papers that treat more ‘traditional’ topics of Patristic Studies there are papers applying approaches and methodologies such as identity formation and reception theory. The volume thus offers a cross section of topics related to religion in late antiquity from the second to the thirteenth century and reflects the current state of research in this wide field. The papers are grouped in four sections, I. Ancient Philosophy, Early Christianity and Judaism; II. Christianity in its Cultural Context from the Second to the Fourth Century; III. Augustine and His Age; IV. The End of Antiquity and Beyond. Part I contains papers by Ilaria Ramelli, who compares pagan and Christians concepts of the ‘Logos/Nous One-Many’ in pagan and Christian philosophers of the second to fourth century, David Lloyd Dusenbury, who explores the concept of the World City in the thought of Nemesius of Emesa, and Susanna Towers, who compares the ‘Demoness’ found in eastern Manichaean texts with the pre-Rabbinic Jewish concept of Yetzer Hara. Part II begins with a paper by Josef Lössl on the juxtaposition of Greek and Barbarian Paideia in Tatian’s Ad Graecos. Marcin Wysocki compares strategies of survival in apocalyptic times in late-antique letter collections (Paulinus of Nola, Augustine, Jerome). Part IV contains papers from ‘the end of antiquity and beyond’. Georgios Siskos writes on Maximus the Confessor’s critique of Monothelitism, Michael Muthreich on an excerpt of Epistle VIII of the Dionysian corpus in Syriac, Helen Dayton on Nikitas Stithatos main work, 300 Kephalaia, and Andrej Kutarna on Theosis in John of Damascus and Thomas Aquinas.

Le roman d’Ancien Régime apparaît en effet comme un texte doublement `signé’ : par un écrivain-Dieu, le romancier, et par un Dieu-écrivain, auteur d’un Grand Rouleau écrit au Ciel. Le lecteur peut repérer dans le texte qu’il lit les traces de la main d’un écrivain-Dieu qui crée l’univers diégétique ; les personnages ne s’aperçoivent pas de ces traces, mais elles voient celles d’un autre créateur, qui est le Dieu-écrivain, dont ils croient qu’il règle leur Destin. Lecteur et personnages ne s’aperçoivent pas des mêmes signatures. Providence, Destin, Fortune, sort, libre arbitre, grâce divine, chance, hasard, occasion, … sont des idées qui contredisent le pouvoir du romancier dans la mesure où elles renvoient à l’existence d’un Dieu-écrivain qui compose non pas le livre que nous lisons, mais le Livre des Destinées. L’objet de ce volume est d’étudier comment, au Siècle des Lumières, les différents types de romans – picaresque, sentimental, libertin, etc. – et de contes – philosophique, moral, esthétique, etc. - gèrent cette situation de la double signature de l’÷uvre.

This volume examines the dynamic concept and changing reality of Roman citizenship from the perspective of the provinces in Rome’s vast, multi-ethnic empire, both before and after Caracalla’s grant of universal citizenship in 212 CE. In Greek communities, and in Jewish and Christian conceptual and actual constructed communities, the Roman definition of citizenship had a profound impact on the shape of abstract ideas of community, discourse about communal membership and peoplehood, and legal and civic models. Just as Roman citizenship was forever redefining its restrictions and becoming ever-more inclusive, so the borders of the other communities to which Greeks, Christians and Jews claimed “citizenship” were also flexible, adaptable, dynamic.

Attributions are central questions in art history. Since the introduction of new examination methods such as radiography, infrared photography and reflectography, conventional art history has undergone major changes. Technical examinations can provide additional arguments for attributing works of art to individual artists or their workshops. However, technical studies often also reveal complex working methods, while new scientific imagery sometimes challenges accepted attributions and instigates reconsiderations of traditional attributions. The XIXth symposium for the Study of Underdrawing and Technology in Painting which was held in Bruges on 11-13 September 2014 was dedicated to technical studies of paintings: problems of attribution (15th-17th centuries). It focussed on the various ways in which technical studies can provide answers to the often complex issue of attribution and will discuss the challenges that art historians face in proposing conclusive theories. This book captures the variety of twenty-four papers presented at the symposium.

It’s a great opportunity for scholars specialized in this specific field of exegesis to expound the results of their research and compare them with others. Also students participate, especially PhD students, in particular of the Department of biblical theology of our Faculty of theology. The largest part of the conference is devoted to analysis of texts, especially of the Bible — Old and New Testament —, but also of other Semitic texts such as the Koran, even other texts widely influenced by biblical texts, such as the Rule of St. Benedict. There are also methodological reflections, to deepen some aspect of our exegetical methodology.

Carlo Dolci. A Refreshment reevaluates the works of the Florentine painter Carlo Dolci. For art historical authors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the name Dolci was used as a convenient epithet for mocking the sentimental style of the artist’s exclusively religious paintings. A seventeenth century audience, however, could still understand his `sweetness’ as an authentic expression of an old theological concept that went back to the bible itself: the so-called Dulcedo dei, or sweetness of God. This study looks at Dolci’s reception throughout the centuries to show how it came to be that the theologically substantiated aesthetic of sweetness in Dolci’s ÷uvre fell out of favor and into oblivion.

Although Thomas Jackson (1579-1640) is recognized by scholars as the most important theologian of the Laudian church, hitherto there has been no comprehensive study of his philosophical theology. The reason for Jackson's neglect is that scholars have been puzzled by the sources, character and influence of his Christian Platonism. From a close and comprehensive reading of his magnum opus - a massive twelve book commentary on the Apostles' Creed - this book shows how Jackson regards the Platonic tradition as an essential and perennial resource for the Christian theologian, anticipating and informing central aspects of Christian theological speculation and belief, given by divine providence to help him interpret and defend his creed. Special attention is paid to the influence of Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464) on Jackson, an important moment in the history of thought since the German cardinal is generally thought to have been without intellectual successors in the early modern period.

Documented evidence has shown that the Hebrew Bible was edited by successive scribes for centuries, and the impact of editing on the resulting text has proven to be crucial. A better understanding of any issue in the Hebrew Bible and ancient Israel requires a deep understanding of the editorial processes. As a consequence, the editorial processes of the Hebrew Bible have come to the fore in the most recent scholarly debates. Nevertheless, editorial processes in the Hebrew Bible are still poorly understood and a methodological overview is lacking. It is apparent that collaboration between scholars of different fields is needed, and a methodological discussion that takes into account all the editorial techniques witnessed by documented evidence in the Hebrew scriptures and the rest of the ancient Near East is required. This book is a step in this direction. Contributions in this volume by leading scholars approach the issue from various perspectives, including methodology, textual criticism, redaction criticism, Dead Sea Scrolls, Assyriology, and Egyptology.

Rome’s transformation from a regional force in Latium into a Mediterranean superpower (4th to 1st centuries BCE) was accompanied by an accelerated change of economic realities. The persistent influx of vast natural and monetary resources from abroad deeply altered the basis of Rome’s military. As income skyrocketed, the exercise of political influence at Rome became increasingly intertwined with issues of personal finance. Despite claims for frugality, the political power of senatorial families was always determined through the accumulation of wealth. By the 1st century BCE, the competition of these families for rank and recognition was dramatically wrapped up with access to monetary capital and economic resources. When the republic finally fell, this was also due to a financial crash that hit the very centre of Roman society. Examining monetary and financial assets, this volume discloses how economic power and `real’ capital augmented the nature of aristocratic power at Rome. In this volume on the comparative study of nobility, historians, sociologists and anthropologists focus on the different processes of transformation that aristocratic elites in Europe went through during the twentieth century. Readers will learn about nobles in northern Europe (Sweden and Finland), southern Europe (Italy), western Europe (France, Belgium, the Netherlands) and central Europe (Germany, Austria, Poland and Hungary). However, because of the comparative structure of the volume, readers will also sometimes encounter the nobility in Britain, Russia and the Baltic areas. The authors discuss questions like: how did noble men and women cope with the rise of totalitarian regimes and with the dramatic periods of the Second World War and the Cold War? What was the impact of the Fall of the Berlin Wall? And how did nobles react to the loss of political and economic privileges? In spite of all the variety and heterogeneity in wealth, power, prestige, and public visibility of these nobilities, some remarkable general trends and patterns emerge from the articles. The Notory Art of Shorthand (Ars notoria notarie), an important yet understudied late medieval work, is newly edited here and presented for the first time in English translation along with an introduction and commentary. This unique treatise on shorthand writing is a hybrid of literary genres that sheds much light on late medieval scribal culture. Following in a medieval tradition of works such as the Secret of Secrets, the innovative Ars notoria notarie points forward to early modern hermetic writers such as Agrippa von Nettesheim and John Dee, the latter having owned one of the three manuscripts of the work. The Ars notoria notarie relates to disciplines ranging from paleography to magic. It has multiple identities: a unique branch of one of the most popular magic treatises of the Middle Ages, the Ars notoria; a rare report on medieval paleography and the notarial trade; an exposé of a unique medieval cipher based on the famous Tironian notes; an eclectic university text bringing together authorities from Pliny and Aristotle to Donatus and Bede; a remarkable source for the liturgy of Thomas Becket; and, finally, a distinctive contribution to the epistolary genre known as the mirror for princes.

Gaudium et spes (Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World) was promulgated on December 7, 1965. It mirrors a new spirit of openness of the Catholic Church to the world, as well as a new historical consciousness, based on a self-understanding of the Catholic Chuch as "linked with mankind and its history by the deepest bonds" (GS, 1). This historical consciousness resulted in a method of social discernment which, inspired by John XXIII, was articulated by Gaudium et spes in terms of 'scrutinizing the signs of the times' and of 'interpreting them in the light of the gospel' (GS, 4). Conscious of the need to revisit the pastoral constitution of Vatican II, the Centre for Catholic Social Thought at the Catholic University of Leuven, has organised two international expert seminars. The first expert seminar (6-7 September 2003) was rather explorative and focused on the relevance of catholic social thought in its actual context with special attention paid to the signs of the times in an era of globalisation. The discussion on the contemporary signs of the times revealed the necessity to clarify the theoretical and practical implications of the methodology of social discernment and particularly of a social hermeneutic in the light of the gospel. This became the theme of a second expert seminar (Leuven, Louvain-la-Neuve, 9-11 September 2004), the discussions of which are the background to this book.

Dans sa conception, cet ouvrage s'inspire directement de Semantique et automate (PUF, 2001), ou R. Martin vise a degager les potentialites cachees du Tresor de la Langue Francaise Informatise. Dans le meme esprit, l'auteur se propose ici de defendre et d'illustrer le potentiel descriptif remarquable du Dictionnaire Electronique des Synonymes du CRISCO (CNRS - Universite de Caen, www.crisco.unicaen.fr) et des outils de developpement qui y ont ete progressivement associes sous la conduite de J.L. Manguin.Apres avoir passe en revue les quatre options principales actuellement representees dans l'analyse de la polysemie verbale, l'auteur selectionne dans le premier chapitre, par elimination progressive, les onze verbes dont la polysemie fait l'objet d'une analyse detaillee dans les chapitres suivants. Le chapitre II est consacre a la presentation de la methode de flechage synonymique de la polysemie verbale, qui permet de reperer les synonymes les plus peripheriques de la vedette etudiee et d'identifier par triangulation les synonymes centraux, ou 'foyers de polysemie'. La methode est appliquee aux verbes affecter, appeler, changer, charger, manquer, , rapporter, relever et voler.Enfin le chapitre IV montre qu'a partir du reperage des dominances syntaxiques des 'cliques de synonymes', la cartographie, loin de se limiter au reperage des dimensions principales de l'espace semantique de la vedette, est egalement en mesure de pointer sur des aires caracterisees par des proprietes aussi bien syntaxiques que semantiques.Par son souci de modelisation du lexique interne d'un locuteur ideal, cet ouvrage s'adresse aux chercheurs et etudiants, non seulement en linguistique francaise, mais aussi en psychologie cognitive du langage et en traitement automatique des operations semantiques.

Throughout its history, persecutions and martyrdom have been Christianity's faithful companions. Remarkably enough, Christians have always valued martyrdom in a positive way. This positive evaluation of martyrdom most certainly has to do with the absolute, uncompromising nature of it. The martyrs' lives and deaths represent the most uncompromising of answers to the divine call. The focus of the contributions in this volume is not in the first place on reconstructing the historical events of the martyr's life and death "wie es eigentlich gewesen ist," but on the discourse generated by this event as mediated in texts."More than a Memory" aims to explore the reciprocal relationship between this discourse of martyrdom and the construction of Christian identity. It will do so by presenting a number of test cases in which this dynamic can be seen at work. They will lead the reader through the entire history of Christianity, starting with the "Martyrdom of Lyons and Vienne" in the second century and ending in the Latin America of the 1960's. Each article will present a test case of discourse-analysis, attempting to explore the issue of how a document or coherent group of documents contributed to create a distinct Christian identity. Taken together, the essays provide an array of examples of how martyrdom impinged on the way Christian identity has been negotiated in the Christian past. In doing this, the volume at the same time illustrates the sheer importance of martyrdom and the reflection and writing about it throughout the history of Christianity until today.

Les articles reunis dans ce volume portent sur des problemes fondamentaux de la linguistique des langues finno-ougriennes: systemes casuels, preverbes, actance et indices actanciels, ordre des mots et hierarchisation de l'information, ainsi que sur des aspects de la reconstruction en finno-ougrien. Si les etudes consacrees au hongrois y occupent une place importante, d'autres concernent plus specialement le finnois, le vogoul, le mordve, l'ostiak. Pour rendre plus explicites le cadre general et les orientations des analyses appliquees au finno-ougrien, on les a fait preceder de trois articles de linguistique generale de l'auteur.Ainsi ce volume interessera non seulement les specialistes des langues finno-ougriennes, mais egalement les generalistes et les typologues: les langues finno-ougriennes ont en effet fourni a Jean Perrot un terrain privilegie pour l'etude des rapports entre construction de la phrase et structuration de l'information.Inversement, on verra, a propos des structures d'actance et de la reconstruction de leur morphosyntaxe en finno-ougrien, que les travaux rassembles ici remettent souvent en cause, a la lumiere des nouveaux developpements de la linguistique generale et de la typologie, certaines idees recues et "enseignements que la tradition a facheusement conserves".

La predication est fondamentalement un acte de discours qui en francais est pris en charge generalement par un verbe (predicatif) et plus rarement par un adjectif, un nom ou une preposition en emploi predicatif. A la lumiere de deux theories grammaticales a la fois structurales et fonctionnelles developpees par Simon Dik et Robert van Valin, l'auteur met en evidence les proprietes aspectuelles et participatives de la "predication verbale" dans le sens particulier que confere a ce terme la "Functional Grammar". Ces deux types de proprietes constituent des facteurs semantiques interagissant sur la transitivite syntaxique.La mise en evidence de ces proprietes permet l'elaboration d'un classement hierarchise des predications verbales. En integrant les proprietes aspectuelles et participatives du lexique verbal, cet ouvrage vise a rapprocher les approches tant formelles que fonctionnelles de son articulation.L'analyse de la perte d'aptitude a la fonction predicative de differentes classes d'entrees verbales conduit en outre a l'elaboration d'un continuum de predicativite (auxiliarite). Et a travers trois etudes contrastives entre le francais et l'allemand, l'auteur montre finalement que certains traits structurants du lexique verbal francais se degagent le plus clairement a partir de la comparaison interlangue, fondee sur le recours a un large corpus de traductions.

Le Pere Jean Guillaume s.j. a publie en 1963 son premier article sur Gerard de Nerval ("Sur un tercet d'Artemis"); depuis lors se sont succedees, a un rythme soutenu, des etudes et des editions critiques qui ont renouvele notre connaissance d'un des plus importants ecrivains romantiques francais et qui se distinguent par leur valeur methodologique exemplaire. Dans ces travaux, la demarche propre aux philologies classique et biblique se trouve appliquee, avec la meme rigueur, dans le domaine de l'histoire litteraire plus recente.Les etudes nervaliennes de Jean Guillaume, parues principalement dans la revue Les Etudes classiques, n'ont rien perdu de leur actualite. Pour repondre a des souhaits plusieurs fois exprimes, les editeurs ont juge necessaire de les reunir dans un ouvrage collectif. Le present recueil apparait des lors comme le complement naturel et indispensable aux trois volumes de la "Pleiade" contenant l'edition integrale des oeuvres de Nerval. Le lecteur y trouvera de quoi nourrir sa reflexion sur les relations complexes qu'entretiennent la critique textuelle, l'histoire et l'exegese.Un chapitre de ce volume presente la bibliographie exhaustive des travaux de Jean Guillaume.
