For the past two decades, the study of "religious violence" has been on the rise. Whilst some scholars argue that violence is innate to (monotheistic) religion or community building, others claim that violence 'in the name of God' is a reaction to secularization, a form of political violence or a myth that legitimates repression by secular states. Battles over Belief. Catholics and Violence in the 19th Century offers a much-needed historical perspective on this social science literature as it provides the first comprehensive overview of the changing interplay of faith and violence during the period spanning the French Revolution and First World War. Chapters probe violent acts linked to inner-Catholic, Catholic-secular and interreligious conflict, but also demonstrate the importance of rhetoric and symbolics for nurturing and framing violence across the nineteenth century world. Of special interest is the role of agency. Thus, the book reveals the motives for violence but also its legitimation and interpretation. It furthermore shows the intricate ways in which differences over religion collided with secular differences. By demonstrating that religion remained a powerful trigger for violence beyond the French Revolution, Battles over Belief shows that the relationship between religion and violence, both in the nineteenth century and more generally, is more complex than scholars have suggested.

This volume focuses on the encounter between European missionaries and indigenous people and aims to illuminate how life in a contact zone changed concepts, attitudes and practices. It collects examples from nearly all world regions from early modern times to the middle of the twentieth century.The contributions discuss the concept of contact zones", defining them both as spaces where people of different backgrounds actually met and as "imagined contact zones" between European Christians and those living abroad who insisted on forming one community and thus exchanged ideas, and as "personalised contact zones" in individuals who transcended boundaries and integrated different backgrounds and attitudes. In each case people, concepts and attitudes changed in the encounter. Practices were modified and new practices emerged. Values and conceptions were transformed. When individuals embodied the contact, however, they often were expelled from the contact zone, especially when they were not recognised as "European". The volume thus also sheds light on the limits of the contact. By focusing on the results of the intercultural encounter, however, it mainly demonstrates the impact of life in a contact zone on those involved." The subject of marriage and sexuality among the Baptists of the 16th and early 17th century lies at the center of this study by Katharina Reinholdt. The explosive nature of this subject stems from its potential for innovation: Within this fragmented religious minority there were a number of secret marriages as well as divorces and even cases of bigamy and polygamy. These events not only shaped the image of the Baptists in the eyes of their contemporaries, they also heavily influenced the development of the Baptists from radical outsiders at the beginning of the Reformation to an established religious minority in the 17th century. The historical reception of the Baptists was also long overshadowed by the so-called "libertarian" tendencies of the era. This new study on the concept of marriage among the Baptists is also relevant to understanding the role of marriage in the context of the Reformation. The Baptist idea of marriage may also be seen as a conscious counterpart to Luther's concept of marriage as a "worldly thing." Between the poles of the old (Catholic) and the new (Protestant) understanding of marriage lay the Baptist position as an independent answer to the question of a new balance between the religious and the worldly aspects of this institution. The marked parallels to the more radical ideas that later emerged suggest that the Baptist position toward marriage was indeed a genuinely reformatory phenomenon and not, as long thought, a belated result of the heretic movements of the Late Middle Ages.
