Nova Science Publishers Inc The Future of Energy: Prospective Scenarios on EU-Russia Relations
This book presents the main conclusions reached by the academic project "Geopolitics of Gas and the Future of the Euro-Russian Relations (Geo4GER)." This project is being developed at IPRI -- Portuguese Institute of International Relations, NOVA University, an academic research institute dedicated to advanced studies in Political Science and International Relations, of NOVA University of Lisbon, Portugal. Energy security is a key issue on the international political agenda, a prerequisite for political stability and economic development and an indivisible part of a state's overall security. For Europe, the high-energy insufficiency is a major challenge, given its dependence on external sources, especially from Russia, the lack of diversification of energy sources, and the poor branch of its transmission network. For Russia, energy has been a geopolitical factor of power and a potential strategic vector to its re-emergence as a great power in the international system. However, in terms of energy, Russia also faces some long-term challenges, given the fall of its production and the low competitiveness of its gas, which is currently saved from the market where competition can hardly enter. Given this scenario, and also the increasingly important role in the political and strategic discussion of energy issues between Europe and Russia, it becomes relevant to diagnose the past and the present to forecast the medium and long term future (2030), taking into account the expected changes in the geopolitical and energetic environment, and the characteristics and dynamics of European-Russian relationship, including its energy interdependence and the energy policies and strategies outlined by Europe and Russia.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Connective Tissue: Types, Functions and Clinical Aspects
The human body is composed of four basic kinds of tissue: nervous, muscular, epithelial, and connective tissue. Connective tissue is the most abundant type and serves as a connecting link for binding, supporting and strengthening all other body tissues. In this compilation, the authors explore connective tissue grafts, a promising and reliable method that provides a satisfactory esthetic outcome, making it a popular option for clinicians. The fundamentals of subepithelial connective tissue grafts, harvesting techniques, clinical success and possible postoperative complications is also discussed. (Imprint: Nova Medicine and Health)

Nova Science Publishers Inc Characterizations of Recently Introduced Univariate Continuous Distributions II
This monograph is, as far as the author has gathered, the second of its kind (the first one was published by Nova in 2017 with coauthors Hamedani and Maadooliat) which presents various characterizations of a wide variety of continuous distributions. These two monographs could also be used as sources to prevent reinventing and duplicating the already exiting distributions. The current book consists of seven chapters. The first chapter lists cumulative and density functions of two hundred and twenty univariate distributions. Chapter two provides characterizations of these distributions: (i) based on the ration of two truncated moments; (ii) in terms of the hazard function; (iii) in terms of the reverse hazard function; (iv) based on the conditional expectation of certain functions of the random variable. Chapter three includes the characterizations of twenty distributions, which appeared in a published paper (Hamedani and Safavimanesh, 2017). Chapter four presents characterizations of thirty six distributions, contains a published paper (Hamedani, 2017). Chapter five covers the characterizations of forty one distributions, which appeared in a published paper (Hamedani, 2018a). Chapter six presents characterizations of eighty distributions, contained in a published paper (Hamedani, 2018b). Finally, chapter seven consists of seventy proposed distributions. The main reason to include previously published papers in Chapters 3-6 is to provide a rather complete source for the interested researchers who would want to avoid reinventing the existing distributions.

Nova Science Publishers Inc A Student's Guide to Right, Left and Truth
This book is an augmented adaptation of the author's 2018 book Understanding Left and Right (Nova). It further reinforces the message that sustained truth-seeking leads people toward the political center. Each chapter offers divide-bridging discussions of issues such as regulation, taxation, corporate-strategy and personal identity, along with the very ideas of knowledge, truth and goodness. Selected chapters from either work would fit easily into just about every college level course across the spectrum of business studies, social sciences and humanities, almost certainly provoking lively comments. This might seem like an exaggerated marketing claim for any serious book, but readers are strongly urged to try it -- and see what happens!

Nova Science Publishers Inc Health, Safety and Hygiene in Indoor Environments
Indoor air quality and human health are of continuously growing importance. Indoor air quality may be affected by many factors excluding, but not limited to, more loosely sealed buildings, the use of air purifiers and other pollutant sources (for example, room air fresheners), the use of various chemicals for pesticide management and cleaning, and finally, the use of synthetic building materials and furnishings. In recent years, people have become more aware of potential health and comfort problems that may be associated with poor indoor air quality. It is partly due to the move to more tightly sealed buildings, the implementation of energy conservation programs, and the growing use of laser printers, photocopiers, and other sources of indoor air contamination. Greater general awareness of environmental issues may also play a part. Most IAQ complaints from building occupants are related to a respiratory headache, irritation, odours, or fatigue. These concerns may be associated with chemical vapours, dust generated in the work environment, contaminants associated with fungal growth (mould), materials infiltrating from outside sources (such as pollen or engine exhaust), or other factors such as elevated carbon dioxide levels. This handbook aims to turn the attention to these subjects and to promote methods and technologies to reduce poor indoor air quality and to distribute outdoor air throughout the building, remove contaminants and odours, and control the indoor temperature and humidity. The information in this guide will help to maintain good indoor air quality in a building, prevent indoor air quality problems, and correct issues that may arise. It will also help to understand the indoor air quality requirements. The structure of this text allows for flexibility in course content and design. It may be used equally well either as a textbook for students or a handbook for environmental consultants, mechanical engineers, building occupants, labour unions and suppliers. Furthermore, this text may be useful data for either the undergraduate or the graduate level. The author wishes to acknowledge Nova Science Publishers with special mentions to Nadya S Gotsiridze-Columbus and Carra Feagaiga for their editorial support.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Progress in Education. Volume 57: Volume 57
Progress in Education. Volume 57 opens with a study wherein the aim is to investigate long-term effects on motor skills and scholastic performance of increased physical education and adapted motor skills training according to the Motor skills Development as Ground for Learning (MUGI) model. Additionally, the author sets out to describe the implementation and societal gains of the Swedish Bunkeflo Project-A Healthy Way of Living. The authors offer a theoretical and practical approach regarding gamification in physical education. For this, the different types of gamification are analyzed, particularly focusing on the origin of gamification in the field of business. The original method of distance learning by exam is discussed, principally the way students can revise their exam papers many times in order to increase their grades, suggesting that didactic encouragement included in the feedback has a motivating function. The following study presents an exercise designed to support the understanding of green roofs as urban ecosystems through a conceptual model, acting as a facilitator for communication across different disciplines. This study shows how conceptual modelling may promote a better-integrated solution for socio-ecological problems. Also presented in this compilation are the results of research concerning tutoring technology for physical education in special needs children. Technologies are employed for correcting motion and psycho-functional and physical capabilities, as well as for the diagnosis and monitoring of psycho-functional conditions. In the 21st century, technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based society, the authors propose that all students need to develop their capabilities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to levels beyond what was considered acceptable in the past. In closing, the authors present arguments supporting how academic development enhances teaching and learning in rural universities. Scholars argue that staff development helps enhance the learners' performance, in addition to improving the university teaching and learning environment. (Imprint: Nova)

Nova Science Publishers Inc War or Peaceful Transformation: Multidisciplinary and International Perspectives
Concern for humanity's future has never been more urgent than now - in the present time - when humanity has achieved the level of capability of destroying itself either through environmental disasters or nuclear wars. On the other hand, we have also achieved material and psychological knowledge and progress that can assist us in understanding not only the causation, but also the potential embedded in human nature, to choose either the path to self-destruction or to sustained peace. In this book, we present both the ubiquitous causes of violent discontent and wars and successful attempts to reduce or resolve conflict. Our authors from five continents represent historic, military, philosophical, socio-political, and psychological perspectives and address some of the important issues which any peace-oriented initiative or society at large must contend with. These refer to access to natural resources, ethnicity, religion, human rights, political systems (whether democratic or autocratic), differences in political and military strength and WMDs, and aspirations of the leaders - in combination with the ubiquitous need for control through domination, historic traditions (such as glorification of war effort as heroism and as a sacrifice in the name of lofty ideas). We offer a vision of a humanistic approach to promote peaceful problem solving that needs to be propagated by education, media, political programs and diplomacy in order to lead to peaceful transformations. The role of the military is given special attention. The novelty of our approach is that we address the typical life situations leading to social unrest and wars within the context of the human mind's capabilities to deal with life challenges. Our Challenge-Resilience-Resourcefulness-Wisdom model (previously published by NOVA) shows how we can study and analyse human errors, regressive tendencies and limitations in order to reframe them as an inspiration for optimal and wise decisions. Based on our authors' insights, we provide many descriptions of how to deal with social adversity in different locations of the world and also examples of actual successes and failures of peaceful transformations. These chapters provide important knowledge and tools for a wide range of professionals.

Nova Science Publishers Inc The Knotted Cord: An Update on Transgenerational Alcohol
The Knotted Cord: An Update on Transgenerational Alcohol. Is a follow up to the original The Knotted Cord published by Nova Science in 2014. It is written as a conversation between myself in 2014 and then in 2019. The conversation is structured around the chapters of the initial book. Thus Ireland's toxic romance with alcohol, the stigma of transgenerational alcohol and the ethical dilemma of diagnosing and managing Neurodevelopmental Disorder prenatal alcohol exposure offer the beginning thrust to the book showing what has changed in the intervening five years and what has not changed. Overall the book is a critical and academic update on the complexities of understanding transgenerational alcohol and its impacts on societies worldwide. Management has clearly been placed in a Systems of Care paradigm, which is consistent with the 2014 book. However the intervening five years have produced a new clinical instrument, the Early Childhood Service Intensity Instrument (ECSII). The clinical emphasis on mothers and children under five years of age has become the entry into decreasing the impact of transgenerational alcohol. At the moment, the teratogenic effect of alcohol on the developing fetus remains frozen in being only related to a dysmorphic face. This is far from the truth as this prenatal acquired brain injury causes a mainly hidden, non-IQ, non-Face driven Global neurodevelopmental disorder, now more correctly diagnosed as Neurodevelopmental Disorder prenatal alcohol exposure, NDPAE, DSM 5.Code 315. Lastly, the challenge of approaching transgenerational alcohol and its impacts is a challenge to traditional medical practices of child and adult care. This disconnected model of care does not fit as medical, nursing, addiction and social workers need to move out of their silos and communicate with health professionals across the age range and accept this 'orphan' condition.

Nova Science Publishers Inc An Introduction to P-Glycoprotein
P-glycoprotein (P-gp), encoded by the multidrug-resistance (MDR)-1 gene is one of the best studied efflux transporters that is linked to multidrug resistance in cancer chemotherapies. P-gp belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family of proteins that utilizes energy derived from hydrolysis of ATP to efflux endogenous and exogenous xenobiotics, metabolites and toxins from the intracellular space to the outside, thereby providing a general protective role. P-gp is expressed on the apical plasma membrane of all major drug eliminating organs such as the intestine (enterocytes), liver (bile canaliculi), kidney (proximal tubules), brain (endothelia of blood-brain barrier) and in certain tumor types. In the intestine and BBB, P-gp limits entry of drugs by actively pumping drugs back into the lumen or blood, respectively. In the liver and kidney, P-gp actively effluxes drugs, endogenous substances and metabolites into bile or urine, thereby removing them from the body. Upregulation of P-gp in tumor cells is noted in several cancers and is a hallmark for drug resistance. Additionally, P-gp is also shown to play a role in neurogenesis and maintaining homeostasis in the brain. Alteration of P-gp expression is observed in neurodegenerative diseases, highlighting its importance in maintaining normal brain health. Due to its central role in defining oral pharmacokinetics, systemic clearance, tissue exposure, organ health and chemoresistance, much of the research has been focused on modulating P-gp. Chemical inhibitors, formulation-based and epigenetic approaches are applied to modulate P-gp activity with a goal to improve oral pharmacokinetics, increase tumor and brain penetration, minimize organ toxicity and potentially treat neurodegenerative diseases. Although enormous research on P-gp has been published, a book chapter exclusively and comprehensively covering diverse aspects of P-gp, including the recent developments in the field, is required. With much enthusiasm from the publisher, we have collaborated to bring together wide-ranging topics on P-gp. This book contains 12 chapters covering the structure, function, regulation, distribution and expression of P-gp, its pharmacological importance in health and disease and role in pharmacokinetics and drug-drug interactions. Also included are computational approaches to identify selective inhibitors and tactics to modulate P-gp function using chemical inhibitors (synthesized or isolated from marine sources), formulation strategies or epigenetic approaches. The last chapter describes various methods to quantify P-gp expression levels and function in in vitro, in situ and in vivo settings. It is our sincere hope that this material will serve as an important desk reference for students, researchers and clinical scientists in academia, medical research and the pharmaceutical industry working in various fields such as pharmacology, pharmacy, toxicology, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacokinetics and computational biology. Finally, we wish to acknowledge the contributions of all the authors who passionately contributed to this book. We also extend our gratitude to the editorial staff and production manager at Nova publishers. Lastly, but most importantly, we thank our families for their continued support during this journey.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Metal Toxicity in Higher Plants
Metals are important environmental pollutants and their toxicity is a problem of increasing significance for ecological, nutritional, and environmental reasons. These pollutants, ultimately derived from a growing number of diverse anthropogenic sources (industrial effluents and wastes, urban runoff, sewage treatment plants, boating activities, agricultural fungicide runoff, domestic garbage dumps, and mining operations), have progressively affected more and more different ecosystems. Even agricultural lands are progressively becoming enriched of metals due to long-term use of phosphatic fertilizers, sewage sludge application, dust from smelters, industrial waste and bad watering practices in agricultural lands. Among these metals, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo and Zn are pivotal micronutrients, while Ag, As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Sb and V and are non-essential for plants and have no known function as nutrients and seem to be more or less toxic to all plants and microorganisms. Sodium excess deserves particular attention. Several agricultural lands are indeed becoming familiar with the problem of salinization, due to the use of fresh water which contains a high level of NaCl or due to intensive fertilization, especially in arid and semi-arid environments characterized by poor rainfalls. Overall, the presence of both essential and non-essential metals in the atmosphere, soil and water, in excessive amounts, can cause serious problems to all organisms. Knowledge of plant-metal interactions is important for the safety of the environment, but also for reducing the risks associated with the introduction of trace metals into the food chain. Although intense research has been conducted during the last 30 years, many aspects remain to be clarified concerning the effect of metals in higher plants. Our goal for this book is to critically review existing literature related to the specific effects of different metals in plants, as well as to provide new evidence about plant-metal interactions in order to clarify mechanisms of metal uptake, translocation, and partitioning and the effect of metal toxicity. Consequences related to accumulation of metals in food products have been described. Physiological and biochemical mechanisms adopted by plants to cope with metal excess and possible implications for phytoremediation of metal-contaminated soils are also discussed. Therefore, we believe that this book will provide a comprehensive overview regarding some aspects of metal toxicity in plants and it will be useful for scientist working in this field of research, but it will also be of practical interest to environmentalists, policy-makers, and resource managers working on the topic. We wish to thank all the authors who joined this book project by contributing their valuable work. Lastly, we extend our sincere thanks to Nova Science Publishers for their efficient support.

Nova Science Publishers Inc A Walking Tour of Italys WWII Battlefields: From the Salerno Landings to San Pietro Infine
The Italian Campaign is truly an amazing, and often heartbreaking, story, and it certainly generates sympathy as well as respect for the soldiers who fought there, particularly the sacrificed Texas and Polish soldiers as well as the British "D-Day Dodgers." In addition to the British soldiers, you gain a new and far greater appreciation of the men in the 36th Texas and Polish Divisions because of their commitment, heroism and sacrifice in these battles, much less the many others from multiple nations who fought in Italy in 1943 and 1944. This book is the first title in the NOVA Science Publishers Homeland Security Series presenting a walking tour of World War II battle sites in mainland Italy: 1. A Walking Tour of Italy's WWII Battlefields: From the Salerno Landings to San Pietro Infine 2. A Walking Tour of Italy's WWII Battlefields: Breaking the Gustav and Hitler Lines 3. A Walking Tour of Italy's WWII Battlefields: From the Anzio Landings to Rome. These books were derived from the sights and sounds I experienced while on Marty Gane's South Mountain Expeditions tour called WWII Invasion of Italy: From Sicily to Rome, which she conducted in September 2014. The late Edwin Cole Bearss was the lead South Mountain historian for the tour, and helped select our expert history guide British Lt Col (Retd) Frank de Planta de Wildenberg, a deservedly renown Italian battlefield tour leader. Franks designed the tour route, providing the specific strategic and tactical on-the-ground details we experienced at each stand (tour location) we visited. Ed Bearss provided insightful color commentary and likened situations to his own combat experience as a Marine in the WWII Pacific theater. This book provides the images and narration of Frank and Ed as we were taken from the Allied seaborne landings at Salerno to the fights for the high ground surrounding the beachhead to the devastation wrought at San Pietro Infine, the subject of a well-known period film by John Houston. During the development of the Ed Bearss memoir trilogy books (see Footnote 7 above), I created the preliminary Italian tour history that has been reviewed, vastly improved and supplemented by Frank de Planta, necessarily and deservedly the book's first author. Working with someone like Frank de Planta, as with both Ed Bearss and Barney Nolan in their memoirs, has proven (almost) as enjoyable as touring the Italian battlefields. Creating this book series brought back many emotive sights, sounds, stories and emotions (unfortunately, not the food) I felt while on the tour. We hope it provides some sense of that experience for the reader. Many excellent academic books have been written explaining Italian battlefield events to the detail, and we include these books in Frank's exhaustive bibliography. However, this book brings the tour experience, being there on the ground, as close as possible to reality for the reader by showing you many images from where the armies fought and died to set Italy free and attack the "soft underbelly" of the Third Reich. Its purpose is to have the reader experience the tour as we did, incorporating images from the extensive video I took that September in Italy. It was hard to imagine the violence that happened there over 75 years ago. Our tour guide, Frank de Planta, with color commentary from Ed Bearss, provided an emotive and accurate explanation of the events, the scenes, and the sacrifice. We hope this book provides at least a fraction of the experience many on this tour experienced there.
