The Book of Joshua relates the settlement of the people of Israel in the Promised Land after the Exodus. Its position within the Hebrew Bible is unique. On the one hand, it resumes and ends the Exodus account after Moses' death, shortly before entering the land of Canaan. On the other hand, it sets the beginning of a new era in Israel's history: the occupation of the Promised Land until the deportation to Babylon. Joshua is thus at the heart of numerous theological debates on the historical dimension of these conquest accounts, or the redaction of the Hebrew Bible - Pentateuch, Hexateuch, Deuteronomistic History, Former Prophets, etc.Addressing those questions requires a rigorous philological approach based on a detailed study of the biblical text. By comparing various textual witnesses and traditions, by analyzing the vocabulary, syntax and literary structure, by taking into account new epigraphical data and methods, one can reach a better understanding of this major work and confront the results with modern theories. To carry on this ambitious task, the present study focuses on a key element of the Book of Joshua: the southern military campaign (Josh. 10).

The first monograph to examine the eschatological discourse of First Thessalonians. It also represents the first analysis of fundamental representatives of that discourse which acknowledges the epistolary and rhetorical structure of the letter, and which understands the various eschatological motifs as part of a systematic exhortation to a community in conflict. Luckensmeyer employs eschatology as the best hermeneutical key to interpret the systematic concerns of the letter. There is no doubt that eschatological motifs abound (see 1:9-10, 2:13-16, 4:13-18 and 5:1-11, among others), but it remains to show how these motifs contribute to Paul's purposes for writing. This is what the author does. Paul is able both to rationalise why the Thessalonians are experiencing conflict and encourage them to a constructive new community identity. The monograph also contains an in-depth introduction to the secondary literature and includes an extensive bibliography and indices for the convenience of the reader.

Ausgangspunkt des Werkes ist die Frage, ob der zweite Brief an die Thessalonicher tatsächlich eine Korrektur des ersten Briefes bzw. der dort vertretenen Naherwartung des Paulus darstellt. Fër die Beantwortung dieser Frage ist entscheidend, ob die in 2Thess 2,2 vorgestellte Parole durch "Der Tag des Herrn ist da" oder durch "Der Tag des Herrn ist nah" zu ëbersetzen ist. Im ersten Fall stellt die in 2Thess 2 bekämpfte eschatologische Lehre keine Naherwartung dar, sondern eine (angeblich) realisierte Eschatologie. Der Verfasser des zweiten Briefs antwortet auf sie mit einer bisher in der Exegese kaum bedachten eschatologischen Position: Er antwortet mit einer Erneuerung der Naherwartung, die Paulus im ersten Brief vertreten hat. Taeseong Roh gelingt es, den zweiten Brief des Paulus an die Thessalonicher (sozial-) geschichtlich zu erhellen. Er tritt damit einer in der Exegese weit verbreiteten Resignation entgegen, das im zentralen apokalyptischen Teil in 2Thess 2,3ff Gesagte sei so sehr verschlësselt, dass es heute nicht mehr zu enträtseln ist. Fër die sozialgeschichtliche Fragestellung wertet die Arbeit verschiedene Indizien in 2Thess 2,1-12 aus. Dadurch lässt sich eine bestimmte zeitgeschichtliche Situation im Imperium Romanum des 1. Jh. n.Chr. zur Zeit des Vespasian beschreiben.

This volume features presentations delivered at annual conferences of the Society of Biblical Literature. In 2014 and 2015, they were offered for the Sacrifice, Cult, and Atonement section, which existed between 2007 and 2015; its objective was the study of the practices, interpretations, and reception history of sacrifice and cult in early Judaism, Christianity, and their larger cultural contexts (ancient Near East and Greco-Roman antiquity). This program unit offered panels under the title Writing a Commentary on Leviticus that were intended to provide scholars working on such commentary volumes with a forum of scholarly discussion and exchange. The panel series was proposed by Thomas Hieke, who was then work-ing on a Leviticus commentary for the academic series Herders Theologischer Kommentar zum Alten Testament (HThKAT, published by Herder in 2014). It was welcome and adopted by Christian A. Eberhart, founder and former chair of the Sacrifice, Cult, and Atonement section. The third and final panel was housed in the Ritual in the Biblical World section at the annual conference of the Society of Biblical Literature in 2016.The present volume makes the presentations by these scholars, and with them an important segment of the work of the Sacrifice, Cult, and Atonement section, available to a wider academic audience. It is thus a sequel to the volumes Ritual and Metaphor: Sacrifice in the Bible (SBLRBS 68; Atlanta: Society of Biblical Liter-ature, 2011), edited by Christian A. Aber kaum eine Zeit war in der Lage, Grenzen des Menschseins, vermeintliche körperliche und psychische Unveränderlichkeiten und Bedingtheiten so zu verändern, wie wir das heute tun können.Die Ent-Deckung der »Menschensicht« des Alten Testaments, seines expliziten Nachdenkens und seiner unausgesprochenen Annahmen über den Menschen, eröffnen in zweierlei Hinsicht Erkenntnismöglichkeiten:Zum einen gehört das Alte Testament unbestritten zu dem religiösen und kulturellen Erbe, das uns mehr bestimmt, als vielen geläufig ist. Wer sich in unserer Gegenwart über den Menschen orientieren will, muss das eigene Herkommen verstehen und die Tradition begreifen, um verantwortlich mit ihr umzugehen.Zum anderen führt die Erkenntnis des zeitlich Vergangenen und damit unweigerlich auch Fremden dazu, das eigene Selbstverständnis zu hinterfragen. The study period covers the years 1538 to 1580. On the basis of an intensive evaluation of the available archival and printed sources, the study - correcting previous research - comes to completely new results. With the addition of an edition of the archival sources, the book sets standards in the field of research into the introduction of the Reformation.

Anke MÃ"hling untersucht die Rezeption Abrahams, dessen Bedeutung als Identifikationsfigur ab der exilischen und v.a. in der nachexilischen Zeit wächst. Dies lässt sich nicht nur an den Texten der Genesis und den sonstigen Erwähnungen Abrahams in der hebräischen Bibel aufzeigen, sondern auch an den deutero- und auÃerkanonischen Schriften aus hellenistischer und römischer Zeit, in denen Abraham eine eindrÃ"ckliche Wirkungsgeschichte entfaltet. Anhand der Abrahamgestalt analysiert die Autorin somit exemplarisch die Rezeptionsgeschichte des "Alten Testaments" im frÃ"hen Judentum und ihre Verschränkung mit der innerbiblischen Exegese. Dadurch ergeben sich Einblicke in einen vielschichtigen Rezeptionsprozess, der die Arbeit der biblischen und auÃerbiblischen Autoren bzw. Redaktoren steuert, in beiden Bereichen strukturelle Parallelen aufweist und konsequent als Wechselspiel von theologischer Gegenwartsdeutung und traditionsbildender Selbstauslegung verstanden wird. Das Material, das die Basis der vorliegenden Untersuchung bildet, stammt aus den Grabungen, die das Archäologenehepaar Guy und Winifred Brunton in den zwanziger und dreiÃiger Jahren des vorigen Jahrhunderts auf den Gräberfeldern der Region von Qau el-Kebir (Mittelägypten) durchfÃ"hrte. Obwohl es sich um die Bestattungen der agrarischen Grundschicht handelt, waren viele der Verstorbenen bei ihrer Beisetzung mit SchmuckstÃ"cken versehen, darunter figÃ"rliche Amulette, Siegel, Perlen und Molluskenschalen.Ãber 1900 Bestattungen bzw. Die Untersuchung analysiert Isebel als literarische und historische Gestalt. Dabei werden insbesondere die aktuellen Fragen um synchrone und diachrone Formen der Exegese und um eine angemessene Rekonstruktion israelitischer Geschichte aufgenommen, mit Blick auf jene konkrete Gestalt erörtert und zueinander in Beziehung gesetzt. So gelingt es, die verschiedenen Ebenen von Geschichten und Geschichte zu erhellen. Die Textkomplexe I Reg 17-19. 21 und II Reg 9-10 werden synchron und umfassend diachron analysiert. Dies bildet die Grundlage fÃ"r eine Nachzeichnung der facettenreichen Wandlungen des Isebelbildes von der Zeit des 9. Jahrhunderts bis in die nachexilische Zeit hinein. Dabei wird ein Wachstumsprozess deutlich, der seine Impulse sowohl aus den jeweils Ã"berlieferten Geschichten als auch aus der Zeitgeschichte der Ãberliefernden gewinnt. Auf dieser Grundlage und einer methodischen Reflexion der bisher erschienenen Arbeiten zur Rekonstruktion der omridischen Epoche, gelingt so insgesamt eine Annäherung an Isebel nicht allein als literarische, sondern auch als historische Gestalt. Ein Ausblick auf die Darstellung der Isebel in rabbinischen Texten erweitert die Fragestellung um den Bereich der Rezeptionsgeschichte.

Edwards proposed that natural types in all of creation served as a communication or language of God, pointing to the antitypes of divine truths. These types are shown to exist all the way down to the cellular and molecular levels of nature. We explore how natural types are not mere poetical assignments of Christian themes onto nature. Rather, these types are ontologically real, in that they eternally existed in the mind of God with intent to communicate divine things to the creature. Thus, we call these natural types onto-types to reflect their ontological significance theologically and spiritually. In Edwards' scheme, this was an important part of God's end in creating. Emerging out of Edwards' comprehensive metaphysics of creation is a portrayal of God's commitment to emanate knowledge of the divine Self into the creation. God's Being is not emanated, resulting in a creation, rather the knowledge and glory of God are emanated into the creation serving to communicate messages of the divine to the creature out of infinite love and faithfulness. Edwards expounded a two-fold method where revelation of this language of nature can be experienced by direct engagement with the beauty in nature and in the study of science and its mechanisms. God's action in revealing takes the form of willing the creation into being, communicating analogically through onto-types in the physical world, and revealing such knowledge to the creature. In this way, all of nature is the triune God acting: the Father willing into being, Christ communicating, and the Spirit revealing. God's Trinitarian beauty and magnificent glory are not merely displayed by what has been made, but is intimately shared and delighted in. This, in Edwards' view, is God's ultimate end in creating.

The Epistle to Philemon is the shortest of all extant letters written by Paul. At first sight, and especially compared to the Epistle to the Romans, the Letters to the Corinthians and Galatians, it seems rather unremarkable. Here, Paul writes to mediate in a conflict between Philemon, a Christian in whose house a congregation meets, and his slave Onesimus, who too has now become a Christian. How Paul writes this letter, however, is what makes it a valuable lesson in Christian ethics, according to Peter Mëller. Mëller shows Paul's completely new worldview, made possible through the fellowship with Jesus Christ and an influence on the fellowship of all believers. The central tenets of the letter - belief, love, fellowship - do not remain noncommittal, but rather become very concrete with respect to the relationsip of Philemon to his slave Onesimus. That Paul did not explicitly demand the freeing of Onesimus from slavery has often been rebuked in recent exegesis - something Mëller rejects. In the world of ancient slavery and the existing legal terms, freeing a slave was not necessarily the best choice. And yet Paul demands of Philemon more than what was legally necessary: a new, changed relationship between slave and master which impacts everyday life. Mëller shows that regulating the matter of a relationship among unequals was not simply a personal affair, but one that concerned the entire congregation, which is why the Epistle to Philemon is important even today.
