Were the Jews who appear so abundantly in the writings of the early Church real or were they figments of the imagination? In this new book, Leonard Rutgers argues that they were both. Exploring Jewish-Christian interaction in Late Antiquity in the form of three case studies, Rutgers shows that early Christian ideas about Jews and Judaism not only played a determining role in the ideologies that shaped early Christian identity formation. Therefore such ideas deeply influenced the dynamics of Jewish-Christian relations during a period that saw the curtailing of Jewish civil rights and liberties precisely as a result of early Christian exegetical activity. Making Myths draws a picture of Jewish-Christian relations in Late Antiquity that is significantly bleaker than the optimistic view of Roman-period Jewish history that permeates many recent studies on the topic. Rare color portraits of the downtown royalty of 1970s New York, from Patti Smith and John Giorno to Hannah Wilke and William Burroughs Photographer Stephen Aiken (born 1948) does more than simply add color to the established record of New York City in the 1970s. (Although he does literally do that: his 35mm photos are some of the few of the ’70s downtown milieu not in black and white.) His photos also hugely enrich the history of Lower Manhattan’s cultural explosion during this time. Aiken’s photos of the downtown scene include intimate portraits of writers Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and John Giorno; the artists Joseph Beuys and Hannah Wilke; and the musicians Patti Smith, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and John Cale. The letters also chronicle Cavafy's calculated refusal to comply fully with Forster's plans. The story they tell involves a number of major twentieth-century literary personalities - Arnold Toynbee, T.S. Eliot, T.E. Lawrence, and Leonard Woolf all participated in Forster's early translation project. Forster ultimately succeeded in launching Cavafy's reputation in the English-speaking world, setting an important precedent for his present global literary fame. In early March of 1915 news broke in El Paso that Leonard Worcester Jr., a leading mining executive in the border region, was being held in a Chihuahua jail without trial or release on bond. Officials loyal to Francisco “Pancho” Villa had accused Worcester of defrauding a Mexican company related to a shipment of zinc, a charge without merit. While struggling to convince Mexican officials of his innocence, Worcester found himself in the middle of a maelstrom of economic interests, foreign diplomacy, and revolution that engulfed the U.S.-Mexico border region after 1910. Worcester’s 1939 memoir of his “aimless” life describes an important period in U.S. and Mexican history from the perspective of an American miner, musician, and entrepreneur—running counter to the bombast of boosters promoting Manifest Destiny. Introduced, edited, and annotated by Andrew Offenburger, Worcester’s first-person account details the expansion of the American West, mining and labor in Colorado, the formation of reservations in Indian Territory, the Great Depression, and the everyday nature of the Mexican Revolution in Chihuahua.
