You Can't Go to War without Song explores the role of public performance in political activism in contemporary South Africa. Weaving together detailed ethnographic fieldwork and an astute theoretical framework, Omotayo Jolaosho examines the cohesive power of protest songs and dances within the Anti-Privatisation Forum (APF), one of many social movements that emerged in the wake of South Africa's democratic transition after 1994. Jolaosho demonstrates the ways APF members adapted anti-apartheid songs and dance to create new expressive forms that informed and commented on their struggles for access to water, electricity, housing, education, and health facilities, the costs of which had been made prohibitive by privatization. You Can't Go to War without Song offers profiles of individual activists to amplify its central point: social movements like the APF are best understood as the coming together of individuals, and it is the songs and dances of the movement that bind these individual together and create opportunity for community organization. Chapters on women and youth complicate such understandings of community, however, showing how activist live and experiences are shaped by gender and generation.

The queer recluse, the shambling farmer, the clannish hill folk—white rural populations have long disturbed the American imagination, alternately revered as moral, healthy, and hardworking, and feared as antisocial or socially uncouth. In Peculiar Places, Ryan Lee Cartwright examines the deep archive of these contrary formations, mapping racialized queer and disability histories of white social nonconformity across the rural twentieth-century United States. Sensationalized accounts of white rural communities’ aberrant sexualities, racial intermingling, gender transgressions, and anomalous bodies and minds, which proliferated from the turn of the century, created a national view of the perversity of white rural poverty for the American public. Cartwright contends that these accounts, extracted and estranged from their own ambivalent forum of community gossip, must be read in kind: through a racialized, materialist queercrip optic of the deeply familiar and mundane. The major aim of the issue is to go beyond the narratives of dictatorship and authoritarianism as well as that of a never-ending story of failed Belarusian nationalism -- interpretive schemes that are frequently used for understanding Belarus in scholarly literature in Western Europe and Northern America. Bringing together ongoing research based on original empirical material from Belarusian history, politics, and society, this issue combines a discussion of the concept of autonomy/agency with its applicability to trace how individual and collective actors who define themselves as Belarusian -- or otherwise -- have manifested their agendas in various practices in spite of and in reaction to state pressure. This issue offers new approaches for interpreting Belarusian society as a dynamically changing set of agencies. In doing so, it attempts to overcome a tradition of locating present Belarusian political and social dilemmas in its socialist past.

The last decade has seen a growing body of research investigating various aspects of L2 learners’ performance of tasks. This book focuses on one task implementation variable: planning. It considers theories of how opportunities to plan a task affect performance and tests claims derived from these theories in a series of empirical studies. The book examines different types of planning (i.e. task rehearsal, pre-task planning and within-task planning), addressing both what learners do when they plan and the effects of the different types of planning on L2 production. The choice of planning as the variable for investigation in this book is motivated both by its importance for current theorizing about L2 acquisition (in particular with regard to cognitive theories that view acquisition in terms of information processing) and its utility to language teachers and language testers, for unlike many other constructs in SLA ‘planning’ lends itself to external manipulation. The study of planning, then, provides a suitable forum for demonstrating the interconnectedness of theory, research and pedagogy in SLA.

Although the Comintern (Communist International) and Cominform (Communist Information Bureau) were disbanded in 1943 and 1956 respectively, the infrastructure for another Communist International appears to be building, with factional centers in the North Korean and the French Communist Party's conference systems. Prior to the 1989-1991 collapse of the Soviet system, the party line for loyal communists was devised by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, promulgated by an international periodical, and more or less enforced through a system of bilateral, regional, and worldwide conferences. This system remained intact until the very end, although the Trotskyists left it in the mid-1920s and various nationalist communists did the same following World War II. Now, the Sao Paulo Forum, a regional conference system, has gathered together virtually all the important Left forces in Latin America on an anti-US basis. Among its leading members are the Cuban Communist Party, the Broad Front of Uruguay, the pro-Eurocommunist Democratic Revolutionary Party of Mexico, and the Trotskyist Workers Party of Brazil. The Jewish Social Contract begins by asking how a traditional Jew can participate politically and socially and in good faith in a modern democratic society, and ends by proposing a broad, inclusive notion of secularity. David Novak takes issue with the view--held by the late philosopher John Rawls and his followers--that citizens of a liberal state must, in effect, check their religion at the door when discussing politics in a public forum. Novak argues that in a "liberal democratic state, members of faith-based communities--such as tradition-minded Jews and Christians--ought to be able to adhere to the broad political framework wholly in terms of their own religious tradition and convictions, and without setting their religion aside in the public sphere. Composer Johanna Beyer's fascinating body of music and enigmatic life story constitute an important chapter in American music history. In conjunction with the Seventh International Forum on the Art of Bookbinding, organized in November 2002 by the international association Les Amis de la Reliure d'Art (ARA), the Gennadius Library organized an exhibition of rare bindings from its extensive collection, curated by well-known bookbinder Vangelio Tzanetatou. Among the items on display were a rare Renaissance Italian leather binding dating to 1464, created for a philosophical treatise written by Manuel Chryssoloras and owned by Sigismondo Malatesta, member of a leading family of the time. Also in the exhibition was an example of one of the Library's Aldine bindings for a 1504 edition of Homer's Odyssey, printed in Venice. Later Italian bindings were represented by an elaborate cover gold-tooled with the arms of Pope Pius VI, produced in 1774. In selecting the bindings, curator Tzanetatou included examples of the variety of styles represented in the Gennadeion's collection, as well as those with special or unique characteristics. The exhibition catalogue, published thanks to the generosity of EFG Eurobank Ergasias, includes her detailed observations on over 70 bindings, with color illustrations of 16 of the most exceptional pieces.

Mediterranean Landscapes in Post Antiquity: New frontiers and new perspectives highlights the fact that the study of landscape has in recent years been a field for considerable analytical archaeological experimentation. This new situation has made it possible to rethink the orientation of some theoretical approaches to the subject; equally these methods have been profitably used for the formation of a new theoretical and conceptual framework. These analytical trends have also featured in the Mediterranean area. Although the Mediterranean is the home of classicism (which also defines a particular archaeological methodology), it has seen the implementation of projects of this new kind, and in regions of Spain and Italy, after some delay, the proliferation of landscape archaeology studies. There are examples of more-or-less sophisticated postcolonial archaeological work, albeit conducted at the same time as examples of unreconstructed colonial archaeology. It is not easy to resolve a situation like this which requires the full integration of the different national archaeological cultures into a truly global forum. But some reflection on the cultural differences between the various landscape archaeologies, at least in the West is required. These considerations have given rise to the idea of this book which examines these themes in the framework of the Mediterranean area.

The Road to the Spring is the first book publication of Mary Austin's (1868-1934) poems. Best known for her prose book The Land of Little Rain (1903), Austin was in fact a poet from the beginning of her career to the end, even though she never published a volume dedicated to her own original poetry. Instead, Austin's work came to light in collections of poetry and in prestigious journals such as Poetry, the Nation, the Forum, Harper's, and Saturday Review of Literature, among many others. The Road to the Spring contains more than 200 poems, most of which can only be found in out-of-print books, magazines, and periodicals, and her unpublished manuscripts archived at the Huntington Library. This singular publication includes her original work, poems she claimed to have written with her grammar school pupils at the end of the nineteenth century, and her translations and ""re-expressions"" of Native American songs, which often diverge greatly from any other known sources. Warren includes an introduction, laying out Austin's place in American literature and situating her writings in feminist, environmentalist, regionalist, and Native American contexts. Het Leuvense Stadsarchief beschikt over een rijke filmaffichecollectie van om en bij de 3000 stuks, uit de periode 1930-1970. De collectie is tot stand gekomen als gevolg van een politiereglement uit 1892 dat de openbare aanplakking van affiches reguleerde. Door de collectie als uitgangspunt te nemen voor onderzoek naar zowel affichekunst als bioscoopgeschiedenis, exploreren de bijdragen in dit Salsa!-Cahier de rijkdom van de filmaffichecollectie ten volle. De auteurs hebben elk vanuit hun eigen specifieke expertise - zij het de beeldanalyse, de affichekunst, de filmgeschiedenis of de bioscoopgeschiedenis - de collectie van het Leuvense Stadsarchief onder de loep genomen. In een eerste hoofdstuk benadert Karl Scheerlinck de filmaffiches uit de collectie vanuit een kunsthistorisch perspectief. Hij geeft hierbij een overzicht van belangrijke actoren en trends. De bijdrage van Patrick Lefevre, die inzet op de beeldanalyse van een aantal concrete affiches, is hiermee complementair te noemen. In een derde hoofdstuk geeft Leen Engelen aan hoe filmaffiches als een bijzonder rijke historische bron voor de bioscoopgeschiedenis kunnen fungeren. Zowel Joachim Nijs als Roel Vande Winkel zoomen verder in op de geschiedenis van de Leuvense bioscopen. Nijs bekijkt hierbij de geschiedenis van bioscoop Louvain Palace / Forum (1914-1981), de langstlevende bioscoop van de stad, en Vande Winkel gaat in op de oorlogsjaren.

What will happen when international forces finally vacate Afghanistan?
