Depuis plus de 20 ans, le Pentateuque en general et la Genese en particulier font l'objet d'un vaste debat parmi les specialistes de la Bible. Les traditions qui constituent ce livre ont certainement une longue histoire que les historiens s'efforcent de retrouver. Aujourd'hui, cependant, les exegetes etudient principalement le processus de redaction entame sans doute lors de l'Exil a Babylone et qui a conduit au livre tel que nous le connaissons. D'autres s'attachent a la forme finale de la Genese pour l'etudier comme un des chefs d'oeuvre de la litterature israelite ancienne. Les articles presentes dans ce livre reprennent ces questions en vue de nourrir le debat et de faire progresser notre connaissance du premier livre de la Bible hebraique. Le present ouvrage constitue les Actes des travaux du 48e Colloquium biblicum Lovaniense qui s'est tenu en juillet 1999 a Louvain et dont le theme etait le livre de la Genese.

According to a common understanding of economics, economists attempt to understand and explain societal reality in the light of individual self-interest. For them, a gift is no exception to this, except for the slight and misleading veil of altruism which covers a purely egoistic motivation. On the other hand, theologians, philosophers and ethicists use a more normative concept of man. Man realises his best potential through deeds of selfless sacrifice that remain unknown to everyone. In reality, however, people are either entirely egoistic nor altruistic. Marcel Mauss' model of the gift is interesting because it seems to escape the classical (or rather, modern) egoism/altruism dichotomy. Gifts are not primarily motivated by the well-being of myself or the other but rather by the desire to bring about or maintain a certain kind of social relation between giver and receiver. Altruistic as well as egoistic motivations are an integral part of that relation. The role of gifts in the constitution of social relations and social cohesion explains why most kinds of gifts are reciprocal and even obligatory. In this book anthropologists, sociologists and economists as well as philosophers focus on the question of the relevance of Mauss' work on the gift for the understanding of actual social phenomena.

The crypt of Archbishop Georgios of Dongola that the team from the Polish Centre of Mediterraean Archaeology of the University of Warsaw, headed then by Stefan Jakobielski, discovered in 1993 was astounding to say the least. The walls were literally covered with writing. Lines close together, neat small letters – the first impression was of something of the greatest importance that the dead man wished to take with him to the other world. Even more astounding was the provisional identification of some of the texts, forcing a complete reevaluation of Makurian culture and Christianity in Africa in the early twelfth century. (…) Adam Łajtar and Jacques van der Vliet (…) undertook the task of recording, understanding, and ultimately publishing this astounding selection of texts in Greek and Coptic, this ‘library’ that Archbishop Georgios endeavored to take with him into the afterworld. These texts are known from several different versions, recorded in different languages, and their attestation in Dongola was quite unexpected.
