Skira START: Young Galleries. New Artists.
This catalogue was published for the inaugural START art fair, held at the Saatchi Gallery in London in June 2014. It offers information on over forty exhibiting galleries and their artists, as well as twenty artists appearing in “Eye Zone,” an exhibition held within the fair. START is a focused art fair, limited to young galleries showing new artists from around the world, in well proportioned museum standard exhibition spaces rather than standard art fair booths. The aim of START is to provide young galleries with a high-profile platform to showcase their artists’ work at an important stage in their careers development, bringing them to the attention of a culturally engaged, international audience in a world- renowned location.

Skira Hanne Tyrmi: The Lost Thing
The Lost Thing uses the house as a metaphor in which the various rooms are images of mental states, memories and displacements. The catalogue accompanying the exhibition is structured as a labyrinthine wandering from room to room showing an experimental exploration of installation art’s ability to articulate existential issues through a poetic architectural adaptation. Hanne Tyrmi (1954) is a Norwegian artist who has been active in the art scene since the 1980s. As an artist, she is totally unafraid of using a variety of visual languages to make her point: she is a sort of “polyglot” with a reputation for creating sculptures, installations, videos and photographic works that invade our emotions like a benign virus. Her work is infectious and any contact with it sets in motion a metamorphosis that brings about a healthy resistance to the emotional malaise of our time. A strong sense of adventure can be felt in her works, something she learnt from her travels around the world, without fear and with an open mind. She lived and worked in Brazil, South Africa and India for years; more recently she moved her studio from Oslo to Xiamen in order to work in Chinese workshops. Hanne has ventured into the world of art fearless of its conventional canons and she is willing to address issues and subjects many artists would shy away from. Her curiosity is focused on how one’s mind and body behave when confronted by certain images and environments, i.e. on the emotional reactions of the viewers.

Skira Arab. Bedouin of the Syrian Desert: Story of a Family
Bedouins, who refer to themselves simply as Arabs (originally, “Arab” was synonymous with “Bedouin”), are nomads who live in the desert, mainly on the Arabian Peninsula, raising sheep, camels and goats. Unencumbered by excessive possessions, and without most amenities, including electricity and running water, they pursue their lives in peace, practicing an ethic of mutual assistance, devotion to family, respect for the elderly and self-discipline. What they may lack in material goods is compensated by their fulfilling and meaningful way of life. The cultures of the Arab world and the desert environment, depicted so vividly in T. E. Lawrence’s accounts of his experiences there, have long captured Megumi Yoshitake’s imagination. But it is the ancient culture of the Bedouins that attracted the photographer’s deepest interest. Over the past seventeen years that interest has become a passion, as she has devoted much of her time to photographing Bedouin families in Syria: this volume tells their stories through pictures.

Skira once upon a time...: Kata Legrady Graphic Works
This volume is dedicated to the international artist Kata Legrady’s graphic work, through a selection of drawings, sketches and preparatory studies published on the occasion of the exhibition at Fondazione Mudima in Milan. Through the graphic work gathered in this volume, we discover her creative praxis which, according to Arturo Schwarz, “is determined, to a great extent, by her unconscious; the work has a playful dimension; she observes the world with a gaze that has conserved the innocence, curiosity and inventiveness of childhood”. Finally, an essay by Bazon Brock brings a deep insight on the importance of drawing in the practice of contemporary art.

Skira LaFerrari: Dynamic Art
What process lies behind the search for excellence in a sports car? This book reveals the work put into the production of the new supercar, LaFerrari – a car whose ambitions are evident through its very name. A voyage of discovery of the Italian passion, method and excellence which created an authentic masterpiece on four wheels, told through the stories of the characters who have worked on the project, and the photos of its creation. Comparisons with its predecessors, the first style drafts, the clay models, wind-tunnel research, studies on cockpit ergonomics, vehicle dynamics, the perfection of the gears and brakes – all are revealed here in an ebb and flow of images and designs. Furthermore, the development of the HY-KERS technology, thanks to its contribution in Formula 1 races, allows an insight into one of the most advanced frontiers in the world of sports cars destined for the road. High-craftsmanship, human experiences and futuristic technologies combine in this fascinating story, in a group work that achieves the greatest combination of innovation and aesthetic beauty.
