After a trip to Japan in 1953, Werner Blaser published his landmark book on classical Japanese architecture. His studies of 17th- and 18th-century wooden buildings document minimalist, grid-based structures using stark black-and-white photographs, some color photographs and numerous line drawings. His book, highly prized in terms of design and content, contributed significantly to introducing Japanese aesthetics to Western architecture, art and graphics. Mies van der Rohe, for example, gave it to many of his friends. As an architect, urban planner and sculptor, Rob Krier has created a multifaceted oeuvre which is presented here in a comprehensive manner for the first time. After graduating, Krier first worked with O. M. Ungers and Frei Otto before setting up his own studios in Vienna and Berlin. He later taught at the Vienna University of Technology from 1976 to 1998 and as a visiting professor at Yale University in 1986. Drawing on a wealth of historical models and archetypal patterns, he developed new typologies of streets and public squares as an architect and urban planner, and was responsible for numerous urban development projects throughout Europe. These included the perimeter block development on Ritterstrasse for the IBA in Berlin, the residential complex on Breitenfurter Strasse in Vienna, the Kirchsteigfeld district in Potsdam, and numerous projects in the Netherlands.

Donald Judd was one of the most important exponents of American Minimal Art. Among the lesser-known aspects of his work are the numerous built architectural projects in which he explores the relationship between architecture art, furniture, and landscape. One particular location was of great significance to Judd’s architectural work: Fort D.R. Russell, a former US military base in the Chihuahuan desert on the southern edge of the pioneer town of Marfa, Texas. Judd acquired the fort and other structures in Marfa which he systematically converted into one of the largest ensemble collections of contemporary art in the world. Villa le Lac, which was designated a World Heritage in 2016, was designed and built by Le Corbusier as Geneva lakeside home for his parents in 1925. Because of its spare arrangement of spaces, he referred to it as a “dwelling machine.” Even today it remains the modern prototype of the “small house” that fulfills all of the functions of a residence with a minimum of floor area and seamless transitions between spaces. In 1951, Konrad Wachsmann and his department at the IIT received a commission from the US Air Force to investigate no less than a completely new method of construction based on the structural models he had already developed. The iconographic model of the US Air Force Hangar developed from this work was a true “turning point in building”: the structure designed represents an almost futurist promise of a fully industrialized building culture, the conceptual image of which also became the direct inspiration for various architectural avant-gardes. The movement of designed objects is not just something purely functional but also triggers a wide range of sensations. A curtain swaying gently in the wind can cause the onlooker to feel easy and relaxed, as if it was he or she who is floating in the air. This imagined projection caused by the perception of moving objects is called "kinesthetic empathy". In this study, which followed on from a dissertation at the School of Design Research in London, the author investigates the esthetics of movement by documenting his own design-based learning and research process in terms of "research through design", using the experimental cooperation with puppet players as an example.
