Medieval Institute Publications Neidhart: Selected Songs from the Riedegg Manuscript: Berlin, Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz, mgf 1062
The medieval German poet called Neidhart is one of the most important poets of his time. Set in the village among peasant maidens and their boorish male counterparts, Neidhart's satirical songs stand in marked contrast to courtly love song and enrich our understanding of medieval literary culture. This book presents for the first time annotated English translations of a substantial collection of songs attributed to this prolific poet. Its source is the thirteenth-century Riedegg manuscript, the oldest extensive collection of songs attributed to Neidhart. This book presents a representative survey of the songs in order to make this material accessible to a broad audience of students and scholars of medieval studies.

Grolier Club of New York Burriana – A Catalogue of Rare Books, Pamphlets, Letters, Manuscripts, Documents, and Objects by, about, or relating to Aaron Burr and His Contempor
Aaron Burr, Jr., (1756-1836), soldier, lawyer, statesman and the third Vice President of the United States under President Thomas Jefferson, was one of the most maligned figures of the founding era—accused of attempting to steal the Presidential election of 1800 from Thomas Jefferson, of murdering Alexander Hamilton in 1804 and of treason in 1807. Yet a careful examination of contemporary documents reveals a far more complex persona, one whose support for women's rights, the arts and the nascent anti-slavery movement were among the most progressive of his time. This catalogue, which accompanied the 2012 exhibition at the Grolier Club, displays rare books, pamphlets, newspapers, manuscripts, documents, autograph letters, art, and relics related to Burr and his contemporaries, complicates the view of Aaron Burr in popular culture and invites readers to reevaluate his legacy.

Peeters Publishers Pictorial Invention in Netherlandish Manuscript Illumination of the Late Middle Ages: The Play of Illusion and Meaning: (Low Countries Series 11)
Hand-painted books produced in the Low Countries during the late Middle Ages are dazzingly inventive, widely admired both in their own time and today. The makers of Flemish illuminated manuscripts experimented, sometimes flamboyantly, with all aspects of their design, manipulating elements of their format, layout, script, decoration and illustration in radically new and challenging ways. In this book, James H. Marrow discusses prominent features of many of the most exuberant illuminated manuscripts created by leading Flemish illuminators of the 15th and the 16th centuries, considering both the playful ways in which the makers of these books reconfigured their design and the ways they exploited these innovations to define and convey the meaning of their contents more effectively. Marrow considers how the designers of these manuscripts broke down the barriers between the different components of the book; how the shapes of some manuscripts became a kind of image; how script sometimes became decoration or one of several illusionistically treated elements or fields on the page; and how decoration and illustration were intermixed in diverse, witty, and provocative fashions. In this final stage in the evolution of the medieval book, leading Flemish illuminators fundamentally changed the structural dynamics of the page, enlarging its fields of visual and pictorial interest and exploiting novel juxtapositions of subject matter and scale, of viewpoint and different kinds of illusionism, to guide viewers beyond the here-and-now, to evoke multiple and alternative levels of truth, and to effect profound transformations of understanding. This is an incisive study of the course of these developments in the Low Countries and of some of the important ways in which they engaged issues central to the function of the visual arts.

Watkins Media Limited The Voynich Manuscript: The Complete Edition of the World' Most Mysterious and Esoteric Codex
A UNIQUE INSIGHT INTO THE WORLD'S most mysterious manuscript. Since its creation in the first half of the 15th century, the Voynich Manuscript has fascinated and obsessed students of the esoteric, of magic and of alchemy, yet to date no one has managed to crack its code. It truly is one of a kind: the only book in existence that has been written in its particular language and alphabet - a language that no one can read. This magnificent edition presents stunning full-colour reproductions of every page of the Voynich Manuscript, along with helpful diagrams that show exactly how the folios are bound into this complex codex. Two introductory essays invite readers to interpret for themselves the clues found in the manuscript's strange and beautiful illustrations of plants, star constellations, enigmatic bathing women and cosmological diagrams. Dr Rafal T Prinke and Dr Rene Zandbergen also draw on the manuscript collections of eastern Europe, not normally accessible to English-speaking scholars, to offer the fullest explanation so far of the Voynich's incredible journey through history, while Dr Stephen Skinner explores the parallels to the Voynich Manuscript in the cryptography of Leonardo da Vinci and the Enochian angel language of John Dee.

Among the fruits of that project was an exhibition in the Library of twelfth century Biblical manuscripts.Light’s catalogue catches the culture of the medieval book at its height, not only in Bibles but in breviaries, lectionaries, commentaries, and works of the Doctors and Fathers of the Church.

University of Notre Dame Press Masters of the Sacred Page: Manuscripts of Theology in the Latin West to 1274
Starting with the premise that the history of a medieval subject cannot be properly written "without recourse to the materials it produced," Lesley Smith's Masters of the Sacred Page provides an illuminating study of theology in the Middle Ages. She focuses on the dramatic transformations of the discipline in the twelfth century and uses a collection of contemporary manuscripts as a guide to its changes and developments. Smith points out that the medieval masters of theology had a much wider view of their subject than the modern academic tendency for neatness and division can easily admit, and she places their discipline squarely within the rapidly evolving intellectual and educational context of the twelfth-century university. Her approach avoids two of the most common weaknesses of modern historical studies of medieval theology. In the first place, those histories have a tendency to be distorted by a reliance on easily available printed editions of medieval texts, the bulk of which are summae and other logical, systematic treatments. This preponderance, however, often reflects the concerns and interests of nineteenth- and twentieth-century editors more than it does the medieval masters. Biblical commentaries, sermons, and manuals for pastoral use have only recently begun to be edited and printed in numbers reflecting their importance and widespread use in the Middle Ages; Smith includes such material in her study. In the second place, traditional histories have a tendency to remove the study of theology from the actual environment of the medieval university and therefore fail to account for the complex relations between theology, the arts, and the burgeoning disciplines of medicine and law. By refusing to follow this trend, Smith has greatly improved our awareness of the situation of medieval theology. Using the manuscript books themselves as witnesses, Smith shows how theology competed with other disciplines for students (as well as teachers), how it attempted to define itself, and how it cooperated with other disciplines to foster new development in book technology—and new traditions in the social and intellectual culture of the medieval university.

Fortunata y Jacinta is the magnum opus of Benito Pérez Galdós, acknowledged in the field of Spanish letters as second only in importance to Cervantes. This study is an analysis of the different parts of the manuscript as "palimpsest," or layering of texts from the early manuscript drafts of the work to its printed edition, produced in successive stages to create a better version than the last. The analysis seeks to lay bare important aspects of the creative process of composition in the astounding cultural phenomenon that is the nineteenth-century realist novel, assessing in what ways any changes from earlier to later drafts may provide an understanding of the genius of creation in this particular literary form.

University of Notre Dame Press Water and the Word, Volume I: Baptism and the Education of the Clergy in the Carolingian Empire: A Study of Texts and Manuscripts
Water and the Word focuses on a genre of literature written for the education of the Carolingian clergy: Carolingian baptismal instructions. This literature has never been brought together and studied collectively in the context of the books in which it circulated. As a corpus, read in comparison to one another, the baptismal tracts tell how baptism was celebrated and interpreted across Carolingian Europe. At the same time, in their manuscript context, they are an important new source of information regarding the nature and the success of the Carolingian Reform to educate the clergy. This comprehensive study has three major objectives. One is to describe the codices in which the baptismal instructions are found, in order to show what other kinds of material the baptismal tracts were associated with and to show where, how, and by whom these codices were intended to be used. Another is to bring together the baptismal texts and study them systematically. Finally, a third objective is to interpret the Carolingian Reform in light of the baptismal instructions and the manuscripts in which they were copied. Volume 1 of this two-volume set is devoted to analysis and interpretation of the material in volume 2. It is divided into three parts. The first part is concerned with the manuscript context of the baptismal instructions. In the second, the baptismal expositions themselves are analyzed. Part 3 of volume 1 offers some conclusions about the Carolingian Reform. Volume 2 contains the Latin text of sixty-six manuscripts, as well as descriptions, introductions, and a topical survey of the contents of these manuscripts. In its broadest context this study is about the Christianization of Europe—not the superficial conversion of conquered peoples, but the slow replacement of one mindset with another that came about through the education of the people under the care of pastors.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd The Index of Middle English Prose: Handlist XXII: Manuscripts in Christ's, Emmanuel, Jesus, Selwyn and Sidney Sussex Colleges, Peterhouse and Trinity Hall, Cambridge
Latest volume in a series which is "a monumental achievement" (Review of English Studies) This volume provides detailed descriptions of Middle English prose materials found in the important manuscript collections of seven Cambridge Colleges: Christ's, Emmanuel, Jesus, Selwyn and Sidney Sussex Colleges, Peterhouse and Trinity Hall. The texts fall roughly into two categories: religious and devotional, or scientific. The former include Wycliffite New Testaments; Emmanuel College's complete Wycliffite Bible; Richard Rolle's Commentary on the Psalms in Sidney Sussex College, and, in Trinity Hall, the Twelve Conclusions of the Lollards in a splendid manuscript designed for presentation to Richard II. In the second category, there are several of outstanding interest: Jesus College Q.G.23 is a beautifully decorated English translation of the Chirurgie of Guy de Chauliac, while Peterhouse MS 75 is the sole manuscript of The Equatorie of the Planetis. As with all previousvolumes in the series, this Handlist concludes with an alphabetical index of Incipits and Explicits intended to form part of an eventual Index of Middle English Prose. Angela M. American Numismatic Society The Copper Coinage of the State of New Jersey Annotated manuscript of Damon G Douglas
From the end of the American Revolutionary War in 1783, until the central mint was founded in 1792, many states minted their own coinage. Damon G Douglas began researching some of these early coins, but his New Jersey manuscript was far from finished when he abandoned it. Nonetheless, it remains an important source of information on New Jersey copper coinage of 1786-1789. In the interests of making this work more widely available to those wishing to study it, the American Numismatic Society has published this study for the first time. It has been annotated by modern-day specialists in order to bring the work up to date.

Amsterdam University Press Alfonso X of Castile-León: Royal Patronage, Self-Promotion and Manuscripts in Thirteenth-century Spain
Alfonso X 'the Learned' of Castile (1252-1284) was praised in his lifetime as a king who devoted himself to discovering all worldly and divine knowledge. He commissioned chronicles and law codes and composed poems to the Virgin Mary, he gathered together Jewish scholars to translate works of Arab astrology and astronomy, and he founded a university of Latin and Arabic studies at Seville. Moreover, according to his nephew Juan Manuel, Alfonso was careful to ensure that 'he had leisure to look into things he wanted for himself'. The level of his personal involvement in this literary activity marks him out as an exceptional patron in any period. However, Alfonso's relationship with the arts also had much in common with that of other thirteenth-century European royal patrons, among them his first cousin, Louis IX of France. Like his contemporaries, he relentlessly used literary works as a vehicle to promote his royal status and advance his claim to the imperial crown. His motivation for the foundation of the university at Seville was arguably political rather than educational, and instead of promoting institutional learning during his reign, Alfonso preferred to direct the messages about his kingship in the lavish manuscripts he patronized to a restricted, courtly audience. Yet such was the interest of the works he commissioned, that those who could obtain copies did so, even if these were still incomplete drafts. Three codices traditionally held to have been copied for Alfonso in fact show how this learning reserved for the few began to filter out beyond the Learned King's immediate circle.
