The Austrian artist Astrid Esslinger presents a compilation of her work from 2003 to the present day with this volume. She has worked as a freelance artist since 1987. Until then she participated in artistic projects of the Linz artist collective Stadtwerkstatt. Her work can be divided into three parallel phases: her early pieces with textile materials and her later paintings with acrylic colors on canvas as well as pieces using an original technique developed for her work while on journeys, cut outs. The text contribution by Birgit Rinagl concentrates on Esslinger’s paintings which explore the themes of men and women, public and private, work and free time, nature and city as well as life and death. Tom Waibel discusses the subversive character of her hand luggage productions and brings light to their dark and ironic side. The introduction by Fina Esslinger, an art historian and the daughter of the artist, gives the reader the necessary background knowledge on motifs and the theoretical framework of the works, encouraging the reader to enjoy Esslinger’s artistic output.

in 1923/24 Henry Frugès, a Bordeaux industrialist commissioned Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret with a "small workers housing estate" in Lège and a garden city in Pessac, comprising 130 to 150 houses with shops. These two housing schemes fitted neatly into the architects research on standardisation and the "machine à habiter", and provided a useful laboratory for gauging public opinion with regard to mass-production techniques in housing estates. One of the most striking features of the Cité Frugès was the use of polychromy on the exterior facades, to, in Le Corbusier's own words, "sculpt the space through the physical quality of colour - bring forward some volumes while making others recede. In short, compose with colour in the same way as we have composed with form. This is how architecture is transformed into urbanism." The “old” material of wood has been used to construct dwellings of different types since the dawn of mankind. And not without reason. Its low density combined with high rigidity, good processability, and its resistance makes it an excellent building material. There is currently a pioneering renaissance of the timber construction, for two distinct reasons: first, wood is increasingly being rediscovered as one of the most important renewable raw materials for sustainable construction. Moreover, a revolution in the construction of timber structures began several years ago with the ever-progressive use of three-dimensional CAD models for digitally controlled robot manufacturing.
