On 27 May 1942, SS General Reinhard Heydrich was assassinated by British-trained Czech agents who had parachuted into Czechoslovakia. He died of his wounds on 4 June 1942. Two days later, Gestapo Captain Horst Kopkow's department at Reich National Security HQ was given fresh directions. From 6 June 1942 until the end of the war, Kopkow was responsible for coordinating the fight against Soviet and British parachute agents dropped anywhere in Germany or German-occupied territories. This new direction for Kopkow made his name. Within months the "Rote Kapelle" Soviet espionage ring was uncovered in Belgium, who could be traced directly to Berlin and Paris. A new counter-espionage fight had begun, and any agents caught would pay with their lives. In France and Holland the Gestapo caught many Special Operations Executive agents trained in Britain. By spring 1944 almost 150 British agents had been caught and deported to German concentration camps, and almost all had been murdered without trial by the December. Kopkow was directly involved in these murders. Arrested by British forces after the war, Kopkow was extensively interrogated due to his counter-espionage experience. For the next 20 years, Kopkow was a consultant for Britain's Secret Intelligence Service.

Intricate processes involved in perpetuating the multitude of physiological phenomena in the human body often encounter aberrations and omissions in the genetic code of life. While such errors often lead to lethal diseases, at other times they provide distinctive survival advantages and thus unscramble cues to unconventional therapeutic strategies for life-threatening conditions. Hereditary Persistence of Fetal Hemoglobin (HPFH) is one such condition wherein the typically inactivated fetal form of hemoglobin (HbF) remains overexpressed even in adult stages of the bearer's life. Strikingly, this condition is known to ameliorate pathological manifestations in patients with aberrant adult hemoglobin synthesis (e.g. β-hemoglobinopathies like β-thalassemia, sickle cell disease etc.). Early researchers in the field expected such patients to suffer from clinical challenges owing to HbF's high affinity to oxygen and consequent difficulty in its release to cells and tissues. Surprisingly, these patients are known to lead a physiologically normal life. Modern-day hematologists and clinical researchers have looked-up to the concept of "HbF reactivation" as a potential curative strategy for patients suffering from β-hemoglobinopathies like β-thalassemia and sickle cell disease. As a result, several drugs like hydroxyurea, 5-azacytidine, cytosine arabinoside, natural products etc. have been tried in clinics to elevate HbF levels in such patients with limited success and poor understanding on the mechanisms of their action. Associated side-effects and complications of using cytotoxic agents like these restrict their use in most instances. Fortunately, with the advent of newer molecular tools and techniques, researchers are focusing their attention to reengineer the molecular machinery and thus reactivate the gamma-globin gene. This motivational analysis of the protagonists in Thomas Hardy's three most widely read novels--Tess of the d'Urbervilles, The Mayor of Casterbridge, and Jude the Obscure--highlights an often-overlooked aspect of his art. Bernard J. Paris shows Hardy's genius in creating imagined human beings. He demonstrates that while Hardy tends to blame external conditions for his characters' painful fates, their downfalls are due to a very complex combination of cosmic, social, and psychological factors. Hardy's characters are usually discussed primarily in thematic terms. The characters are are so richly portrayed, Paris argues, that they can be better understood independent of Hardy's interpretations, in motivational terms and he utilizes the psychologist Karen Horney's theories to recover Hardy's intuitions. The characters are full of inner conflicts that make them difficult to fathom, but the approach Paris employs explains their contradictions and illuminates their troubled relationships--shedding light on these expertly crafted imagined human beings. This psychological approach to Hardy's characters enables us to understand his characters and gain insight into the implied authors of the works. In addition, the approach shows Hardy's authorial personality. We can see that Hardy treats some defensive strategies more sympathetically than others. Given his view of life as "a general drama of pain," resignation, like that of Hardy's character Elizabeth-Jane, is the strategy he prefers.

Recent book-length studies of Thoreau have focused either on his place in the history of the natural sciences or have applied political principles to his works. None, however, has fully addressed what ecocritic Rebecca Solnit calls "the Thoreau problem," the compartmentalizing of Thoreau's mind into either that of a hermit of nature or that of a champion of social reform. This book proposes an interdisciplinary solution to this problem through the connection between Thoreau's ecological study of nature and his intense interest in the emerging social sciences, especially the history of civilization and ethnology. The book first establishes Thoreau's "human ecology," the relation between the natural sciences and the social sciences in his thinking, exploring how his reading in contemporary books about the history of humanity and racial science shaped his thinking and connecting these emerging anthropological texts to his late nature writings. It then discusses these connections in his major works, including Walden and his "reform papers" such as "Civil Disobedience," the travel narrative A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, The Maine Woods, and Cape Cod. The concluding chapter focuses on Thoreau's attitude toward Manifest Destiny, arguing, against conventional views, that considering both his life and his writing, especially the essay "Walking," we must conclude that he both accepted and endorsed Manifest Destiny as an inevitable result of cultural succession.
