Satyric is the most thinly attested genre of Greek drama, but it appears to have been the oldest and according to Aristotle formative for tragedy. By the 5th Century BC at Athens it shared most of its compositional elements with tragedy, to which it became an adjunct; for at the annual great dramatic festivals, it was performed only together with, and after, the three tragedies which each poet was required to present in competition. It was in contrast with them, aesthetically and emotionally, its plays being considerably shorter and simpler; coarse and half-way to comedy, it burlesqued heroic and tragic myth, frequently that just dramatised and performed in the tragedies. Euripides'Cyclops is the only satyr-play which survives complete. It is generally held to be the poet's late work, but its companion tragedies are not identifiable. Its title alone signals its content, Odysseus' escape from the one-eyed, man-eating monster, familiar from Book 9 of Homer's Odyssey. Because of its uniqueness, Cyclops could afford only a limited idea of satyric drama's range, which the many but brief quotations from other authors and plays barely coloured. Our knowledge and appreciation of the genre have been greatly enlarged, however, by recovery since the early 20th Century of considerable fragments of Aeschylus, Euripides' predecessor, and of Sophocles, his contemporary - but not, so far, of Euripides himself. This volume provides English readers for the first time with all the most important texts of satyric drama, with facing-page translation, substantial introduction and detailed commentary. It includes not only the major papyri, but very many shorter fragments of importance, both on papyrus and in quotation, from the 5th to the 3rd Centuries; there are also one or two texts whose interest lies in their problematic ascription to the genre at all. Major Louis Joseph Vionnet's memoirs of Napoleons disastrous 1812 campaign in Russia are readable, detailed, and full of personal anecdote and vivid glimpses into the life of the nineteenth-century soldier. His account concentrates in particular on the retreat from Moscow, but he was present at all the major actions and followed the entire course of the campaign from the opening moves in July 1812 to being chased through Prussia by bands of Cossacks in early 1813. He was present at the destruction of Smolensk, toured the battlefield of Borodino and witnessed the great fire in Moscow. Vionnet was a major in the Fusiliers-Grenadiers, a regiment of veterans in the Imperial Guard, and his account provides a wonderful insight into the lan, morale and cohesion of this elite fighting force. Jonathan North has translated Vionnets memoirs for the first time for this English edition. In addition to providing detailed explanatory notes, he quotes from the accounts left by five other soldiers from the same regiment, and these extracts allow the reader to follow the ups and downs of the unit as a whole. Author: Louis Joseph Vionnet, Vicomte de Maringon, was born in Longueville in 1769, the son of a peasant and a lacemaker. He joined the artillery in 1793 and was promoted to captain in the line in 1794. He fought in Italy in 1796, in the line infantry in 1798 and the Guard grenadiers in 1806, and campaigned in Prussia, Poland and Spain. In 1809 he joined the Fusiliers of the Guard, fought again in Spain in 1811 and then, with the rank of major, he took part in the 1812 Russian campaign, which he survived. He retired in the 1830s and died in 1834.

Intricate processes involved in perpetuating the multitude of physiological phenomena in the human body often encounter aberrations and omissions in the genetic code of life. While such errors often lead to lethal diseases, at other times they provide distinctive survival advantages and thus unscramble cues to unconventional therapeutic strategies for life-threatening conditions. Hereditary Persistence of Fetal Hemoglobin (HPFH) is one such condition wherein the typically inactivated fetal form of hemoglobin (HbF) remains overexpressed even in adult stages of the bearer's life. Strikingly, this condition is known to ameliorate pathological manifestations in patients with aberrant adult hemoglobin synthesis (e.g. β-hemoglobinopathies like β-thalassemia, sickle cell disease etc.). Early researchers in the field expected such patients to suffer from clinical challenges owing to HbF's high affinity to oxygen and consequent difficulty in its release to cells and tissues. Surprisingly, these patients are known to lead a physiologically normal life. Modern-day hematologists and clinical researchers have looked-up to the concept of "HbF reactivation" as a potential curative strategy for patients suffering from β-hemoglobinopathies like β-thalassemia and sickle cell disease. As a result, several drugs like hydroxyurea, 5-azacytidine, cytosine arabinoside, natural products etc. have been tried in clinics to elevate HbF levels in such patients with limited success and poor understanding on the mechanisms of their action. Associated side-effects and complications of using cytotoxic agents like these restrict their use in most instances. Fortunately, with the advent of newer molecular tools and techniques, researchers are focusing their attention to reengineer the molecular machinery and thus reactivate the gamma-globin gene. This book brings together a selection of chapters dedicated to fetal hemoglobin -- its physiological role, regulation, methodologies to manipulate and future strategies. Brooklyn's cultural life has always been deeply embedded in its educational and social life, a life that has seen many changes through the 19th and 20th centuries. Although it was one of the largest cities in the US before the Civil War, Brooklyn did not have a permanent performance institution, forcing the residents to look to New York City for culture.
