Columbia University Press Amboina, 1623: Fear and Conspiracy on the Edge of Empire
In 1623, a Japanese mercenary called Shichizō was arrested for asking suspicious questions about the defenses of a Dutch East India Company fort on Amboina, a remote set of islands in what is now eastern Indonesia. When he failed to provide an adequate explanation, he was tortured until he confessed that he had joined a plot orchestrated by a group of English merchants based nearby to seize control of the fortification and ultimately to rip the spice-rich islands from the Company’s grasp. Two weeks later, Dutch authorities executed twenty-one alleged conspirators, sparking immediate outrage and a controversy that would endure for centuries to come.In this landmark study, Adam Clulow presents a new perspective on the Amboina case that aims to move beyond the standard debate over the guilt or innocence of the supposed plotters. Instead, Amboina, 1623 argues that the case was driven forward by a potent combination of genuine crisis and overpowering fear that propelled the rapid escalation from suspicion to torture, that gave shape and form to an imagined plot, and that pushed events forward to their final bloody conclusion. Based on an exhaustive analysis of original trial documents, letters, and depositions, this book offers a masterful reinterpretation of a trial that has divided opinion for centuries while presenting new insight into global history and the nature of European expansion across the early modern world.

Artech House Publishers Electric Circuits: A Primer
Working through a modern detailed textbook on the subject can be a daunting project for any student or professional, and the sheer volume of material presented in such textbooks is often prohibitive. The aim of this book is to explain the key concepts of electric circuits in a simple, to the point manner, while making use of worked examples. It is written in three parts, covering static circuits in the time domain, dynamic circuits, and sinusoidal sources and the so-called AC paradigm, in that order. The book focuses on models of the real world, and discusses the basis as well as the limitations for each one to show how they enable the design of systems. Detailed knowledge of the underlying physics is not required to understand the material. The text emphasizes learning directly on the time domain, so models like Laplace and Fourier transforms are not included. The purpose is to use direct time domain numerical solutions of linear systems of equations and differential equations on modern computers. The solutions are explained and highlighted in the book, with several examples as well as a MATLAB source code. Circuit simulation using software such as SPICE is mentioned, but not explained in depth. As this book deals with electric circuit theory at an introductory level, derivations are kept to a minimum and ideas are communicated through practical applications. It is aimed at newcomers or professionals who want a refresher course, but the author provides several references to more in-depth work if the reader seeks more information.

Penguin Books Ltd The Light of Asia: A History of Western Fascination with the East
This rich and enjoyable book by the acclaimed author of Japan Story explores the many ways in which Asia has influenced Europe and North America over centuries of tangled, dynamic encountersFrom the time of the ancient Greeks onwards the West's relationship with Asia consisted for the most part of outrageous tales of strange beasts and monsters, of silk and spices shipped over vast distances and an uneasy sense of unknowable empires fantastically far away. By the twentieth century much of Asia might have come under Western rule after centuries of warfare, but its intellectual, artistic and spiritual influence was fighting back. The Light of Asia is a wonderfully varied and entertaining history of the many ways in which Asia has shaped European and North American culture over centuries of tangled, dynamic encounters, and the central importance of this vexed, often confused relationship. From Marco Polo onwards Asia has been both a source of genuine fascination and equally genuine failures of comprehension. China, India and Japan were all acknowledged to be both great civilizations and in crude ways seen as superseded by the West. From Chicago to Calcutta, and from antiquity to the new millennium, this is a rich, involving story of misunderstandings and sincere connection, of inspiration and falsehood, of geniuses, adventurers and con-men.Christopher Harding's captivating gallery of people and places celebrates Asia's impact on the West in all its variety.

Sasquatch Books Low Sodium, Big Flavor: 115 Recipes for Pantry Staples and Daily Meals
"Cooks who are watching their sodium but looking to spice up their lives should give this book a look. Recommended to readers of all cooking levels who are looking to bring healthy but delicious foods into their lives."—BooklistThese low-sodium but flavor-packed 115 recipes plus daily meal plans will improve cardiac health without sacrificing taste. A lack of salt often means that food tastes ho-hum, which can ruin your appetite and adversely affect your quality of life. Yet the reality is that sodium levels in packaged and processed foods--such as ketchup, canned broths, and soups, to name just a few--are shockingly high. To stick with a low-sodium diet long-term you want to savor the food you're eating (so important!), which means finding new ways to replace the flavors that salt naturally highlights. Author Lara Ferroni, who adheres to a low-sodium diet herself, has spent years creating naturally flavorful recipes everyone will love. In this book, you will find 115 recipes for homemade condiments, spice blends, dressings, cheeses, breads, prepared meats, and other foods. In addition, she offers daily meal plans--breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even dessert!--which contain less than a total of 2,000 mg of sodium, typically the daily amount allowed on a low-sodium diet. Ferroni, who is also a food photographer, has filled the book with enticing photos and shares her experiences of maintaining (and making peace with) a low-sodium diet. There is no need to feel deprived on a low-sodium diet. These recipes will help you love the food you eat while at the same time feel good about taking care of your health.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Aroma Kitchen: Cooking with Essential Oils
The human tongue and palate know only five tastes; our nose complements this rather limited sense. Much of what we think we taste is actually derived from our sense of smell! Because the nose and mouth are connected, taste and smell work hand-in-hand to complete our eating experiences; incorporating scent, in the form of essential oils, is a logical way to optimize our meals without adding additional chemicals and fillers to our food. The recipes in this book focus on using fresh, local (if possible) ingredients and scented essential oils to nourish your loved ones in a healthy and varied way. Included are the basics of essential oils, including recipes for creating your own spiced oils, vinegars, butters, salts, syrups, honey, and sugars. Easy-to-follow recipes for warm and cold appetizers, soups, main and side dishes, desserts, and drinks and cocktails will have you cooking with essential oils in no time! A tips and tricks section helps to eliminate any guesswork on the part of the home cook, and the authors include menu examples by occasion. Eliane Zimmermann, leading lecturer for aromatherapy practice and graduate of the renowned Shirley Price International College of Aromatherapy, provides the introduction.
