Until half a century ago, it was assumed that the forces of nature were symmetric and that they did not distinguish between right and left, between image and mirror image. The discovery of the violation of parity in 1956 was more than a sensation, for some it was a shock. It implied that the universe displays handedness, or chirality, and that it is fundamentally asymmetric. Remarkably, a most striking asymmetry is encountered in the realm of biology. Living organisms contain proteins built almost exclusively from L-amino acids, and nucleic acids derived from D-sugars only. Yet a mirror-image biochemistry, based on D-amino acids and L-sugars is, from a purely chemical standpoint, entirely conceivable. Where, then, does this extraordinary natural selectivity come from? Is it directly, or indirectly, connected to the universal violation of parity? This book is meant as a brief review of the various manifestations of handedness, or chirality, in the universe. It does not attempt to present a solution to basic questions which perhaps will never be unambiguously and conclusively answered. Rather, it is an excursion through nature, to observe and recognize how the chirality manifests itself at different structural levels. The excursion starts in the chemistry and physics laboratory. Then a journey into outer space and back in time is undertaken. After a return to our planet Earth, the focus is on the development of living organisms. On December 15, 1868, Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius (1794–1868), Professor of Botany at the University of Munich and director of the Royal Botanic Garden, was carried to his grave in a coffin covered with fresh palm leaves. These were a reference to his groundbreaking Natural History of Palms: a work in three volumes, published between 1823 and 1853. At the time, this encyclopedic treasury contained the sum of human knowledge on the topic, and included 240 exquisite chromolithographic illustrations, featuring landscape views of palm habitats and botanical dissections.This epic folio was based on von Martius’s expedition to Brazil and Peru with zoologist Johann Baptist von Spix, sponsored by King Maximilian I of Bavaria, to investigate natural history and native tribes. From 1817 to 1820 the pair traveled over 2,250 km (1,400 miles) throughout the Amazon basin, the most species-rich palm region in the world, collecting and sketching specimens. On their return both men were awarded knighthoods and lifetime pensions. In his epic work, von Martius outlined the modern classification of palm, produced the first maps of palm biogeography, described all the palms of Brazil, and collated the sum of all known genera of the palm family. Apart from his own collection of specimens and notes, von Martius also wrote about the findings of others. Von Martius’s folio is unusual in its inclusion of cross-sectioned diagrams, conveying the architecture of these mighty trees, which central Europeans would have found hard to imagine accurately. Equally remarkable are the color landscapes showing various palms—often standing alone—which have a simple and elegant beauty. This famous work is an unrivaled landmark in botanic illustration and taxonomy.

For over 15 years, researchers have described a crisis in our nations' early learning classrooms. Hundreds of children are expelled from childcare and preschool every day; a rate nearly three times that of kindergarten-12th grade students. While policymakers have taken steps to mitigate this crisis, disparities in who is expelled persist. Boys and Black children are routinely over-represented among those pushed out of the exact environments that are supposed to help prepare them for school. Each child's expulsion is symptomatic of a larger crisis--an overburdened, underfunded, undervalued, and fragmented early education system. In early childhood, expulsion is the result of a series of adult decisions made within constrained contexts and at times blind to downstream consequences: exhausted and underpaid teachers deciding how to expend their limited attention and energy in a chaotic classroom; administrators on razor-thin budgets deciding among hiring additional personnel, providing high-quality training, or investing in adequate classroom resources; fragmented state agencies separately deciding on standards and policies and allocating funds for early intervention and consultation services. By examining these complex causes, No Longer Welcome starts a critical conversation between and across sectors of the early childhood field. Expectation is an integral part of the reading experience. As we read a text, we begin to classify it and compare it to others with which it seems to share a family resemblance. Drama is a particularly rich and rewarding field for studying the complex ways in which such expectations are created. Theatre audiences and readers of plays are encouraged in a variety of ways to guess at what might unfold on the stage and on the page, and much of the pleasure of the theatrical experience revolves around this guessing game. Plays of Expectations explores these expectations through the lens of twentieth-century Russian drama. In the operas and plays considered here, dramatists tell stories that, for the most part, already existed in the cultural repertoire of the contemporary Russian audience. In each case the dramatists and their texts invite readers or audiences to compare a new version of a familiar story with previous versions. Scholar Andrew Wachtel presents each of these dramatic texts as a nexus of intertextual play, a space in which various incarnations of a storyline can interact to create a new synthesis, which itself can become a self-standing version of the story. Despite their seemingly obvious public health utility, however, these chemically infused nets and their rise to prominence were anything but inevitable.In Nothing But Nets, Kirsten Moore-Sheeley untangles the complicated history of insecticide-treated nets as it unfolded transnationally and in Kenya specifically—a key site of insecticide-treated net research—to reveal how the development of this intervention was deeply enmeshed with the emergence of the contemporary global health enterprise. While public health workers initially conceived of nets as a stopgap measure that could be tailored to impoverished, rural health systems in the early 1980s, nets became standardized market goods with the potential to save lives and promote economic development globally. This shift attracted donor resources for malaria control amid the rise of neoliberal regimes in international development, but it also perpetuated a paradigm of fighting malaria and poverty at the level of individual consumers. In the wake of World War II, a number of institutions designed to promote a liberal global economic and geopolitical order were established—the International Monetary Fund, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (forerunner of the World Trade Organization), and the World Bank in the economic sphere, and the United Nations in the geopolitical realm. Although these organizations were far from perfect, their actions promoted rising living standards and political freedoms for all. Liberalism thus reengineered represented a fundamental bet on the supremacy of democracy and the market economy, and spurred the transformation of North America, Western Europe, and Japan into prosperous societies, each with a large and vibrant middle class and a social safety net. Now, however, this liberal geopolitical and economic order is under attack. The free movement of goods, services, money, people, and information that once formed the recipe for progress under liberalism is blamed by many for rising inequality, mass migrations, and the declining legitimacy of political parties, as well as the fragmentation of global superpower relations. Here James O'Hara shows how the deceptive nature of prophecy in the Aeneid complicates assessment of the poem's attitude toward its hero's achievement and toward the future of Rome under Augustus Caesar. This close study of the language and rhetorical context of the prophecies reveals that they regularly suppress discouraging material: the gods send promising messages to Aeneas and others to spur them on in their struggles, but these struggles often lead to untimely deaths or other disasters only darkly hinted at by the prophecies. O'Hara finds in these prophecies a persistent subtext that both stresses the human cost of Aeneas' mission and casts doubt on Jupiter's promise to Venus of an "endless empire" for the Romans. O'Hara considers the major prophecies that look confidently toward Augustus' Rome from the standpoint of Vergil's readers, who, like the characters within the poem, must struggle with the possibility that the optimism of the prophecies of Rome is undercut by darker material partially suppressed. The study shows that Vergil links the deception of his characters to the deceptiveness of Roman oratory, politics, and religion, and to the artifice of poetry itself. In response to recent debates about whether the Aeneid is optimistic or pessimistic, O'Hara argues that Vergil expresses both the Romans' hope for the peace of a Golden Age under Augustus and their fear that this hope might be illusory. By late January of 1863, the 9th Massachusetts Battery of Light Artillery has been stationed within the Washington, D.C. defenses the entirety of its five-month existence. The soldiers are badly demoralized, inadequately trained and poorly disciplined. When the inept captain of the battery believes that he's about to be fired, he hastily resigns, and the governor of Massachusetts promptly selects a twenty-three-year-old artillery officer with battlefield experience to take command. Captain John Bigelow institutes strict discipline and rigorous training which causes the men, including Chief Bugler Charles Wellington Reed, to consider him to be a heartless tyrant. However, Captain Bigelow's methods rapidly improve their capabilities and Reed reluctantly gains respect for the new captain. Nevertheless, subtle conflict between captain and bugler remains in a manner only constrained by military protocol. In late June of 1863 the battery is collected by the Army of the Potomac as it passes the Washington defenses to thwart an invasion by Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. After days of hard marching, Bigelow's Battery arrives on the Gettysburg battlefield in the forenoon of July 2, 1863. Une reponse satisfaisante a cette question ne pourra etre donnee que par un ensemble de recherches articulees entre elles, portant non seulement sur le lexique et la grammaire, mais surtout sur les organisations textuelles et argumentatives. Le projet qui porte Les constructions causatives en malgache constitue un des elements de cette enquete. Bien que limite par choix a une etude de structures morpho-syntaxiques, il a ete concu pour jeter quand meme quelque lumiere sur le sens. Il s'agit en effet de savoir quel sens la langue construit avec les constituants dont elle dispose. Plus particulierement, il importe de saisir comment le malgache utilise les affixes qu'il recoit en heritage de ses origines austronesiennes et qu'il partage avec les langues apparentees pour se creer un ensemble diversifie de phrases semantiquement causatives. A cet effet, plus de 100 enonces ont ete analyses, choisis dans un corpus qui s'etend du classique ancien (avec le Tantara ny Andriana, des annees 1870-80) au malgache standard contemporain. Ceci permet d'etablir qu'a des enonces diversifies par ces affixes - par leur position et leurs effets fonctionnels - correspondent des interpretations distinctes soit de A"cause determinanteA" (ou rarement finale), soit d'explication justificative, soit d'ingredience...Cet ouvrage trouve son complement dans les travaux - articles et conferences a Madagascar - que l'auteur a consacres par ailleurs aux argumentations touchant a la notion de A"causeA", telles qu'on les trouve developpees dans des enonces complexes.

Naast de officiele talen die in het huidige Nabije Oosten gesproken worden bestaat nog een groot aantal andere talen, waarvan sommige een al zeer oude geschiedenis hebben. In vroeger tijden was het aantal gesproken talen echter een veelvoud hiervan. Het beeld van de spraakverwarring die door God werd aangericht bij de Toren van Babel (Genesis 11:1-9) wordt aanschouwelijk gemaakt in dit boek, waarin meer dan dertig talen uit het Oude Nabije Oosten nader worden toegelicht. In een tijd waarin communicatie tussen gemeenschappen traag verliep en er nauwelijks sprake was van centralisatie, ontwikkelde zich nog geen standaardtaal. Integendeel, door de fragmentatie van gemeenschappen konden veel verschillende talen en dialecten ontstaan, al dan niet behorend tot een of andere taalfamilie. Van de hier besproken talen kan een groot aantal worden onderverdeeld in verschillende taalfamilies, terwijl daarnaast een restgroep wordt aangetroffen van geisoleerde talen die geen duidelijke taalverwantschap hebben. Hoewel alle auteurs hun bijdrage een eigen kleur hebben gegeven, gaat er steeds aandacht uit naar de volgende onderwerpen: taalfasen en dialecten, de gesproken versus de geschreven taal, tekstgenres, etymologien, leenwoorden en mogelijke invloeden. Adrian Wypadlo bietet eine umfassende Interpretation der Transfigurationserzählung des Markusevangeliums mit der Grundthese, dass in Mk 9,2-8 zusammen mit der Taufperikope (Mk 1,9-11) die für den Makrotext zentrale christologische Legitimationserzählung vorliegt. Dabei unternimmt er den Versuch, eine alte These neu zu begründen: Der geistesgeschichtliche Nährboden, auf dem die Transfigurationserzählung wachsen konnte, ist die Exegese von Ex 24 und 34 im hellenistischen Judentum. Der Autor bietet nach einem umfassenden, der Vorverständigung dienenden Einleitungskapitel zunächst eine gründliche Einzelversanalyse des Textes, speziell unter narratologischen Aspekten.
