Emergency medicine attendings who wish to hone their teaching skills can find a number of books on educational strategies written by physicians from other disciplines. However, until the publication of the first edition of this book, they did not have access to a text written by emergency medicine physicians on methods of teaching that are directly applicable to teaching EM. This book was compiled to meet that need. Following the introductory section, which provides important background information, the book’s contents are organized into 4 sections that correspond to the core needs and interests of EM educators: Section 2 focuses on practical and ethical considerations of teaching in the ED; Section 3 provides strategies for teaching specific groups of learners; Section 4 looks at the skills that are characteristic of the best EM educators; and Section 5 looks indepthly at specific teaching techniques and strategies. Authors were given free rein to develop their chapters and write in their own style. They were asked to present their personal views on how to successfully teach the art of emergency medicine, rather than review evidence-based guidelines regarding medical education. Electro-Motive Division of General Motors was North America’s leading locomotive builder from 1945 to 1983. After the early years of custom-built motive power and trains, EMD took to the rails in a big way when it built its first freight locomotives in 1939. The FT locomotive put the future of steam locomotion on notice, and the classic bulldog nose styling became an icon of locomotive design. In 1949, the GP (for general purpose) was born of functionalism, with the Geeps morphing into a whole line of purely utilitarian freight locomotives that became staples on nearly every railroad in North America. Railroading’s desire for more horsepower introduced further refined series of locomotives with four-and-six-axle (and traction motor) versions available. Over the years, EMD locomotives have worn just about every colour of the spectrum. Within these pages is a vivid survey of thirty-five years of Mike Danneman photographs illustrating the EMD locomotive.

It is important that stakeholders are aware of practices supported as effective for students with learning and behavioral disabilities in order to provide instruction that results in improved learner outcomes. Perhaps equally important, stakeholders should also know which practices have been shown by research to be ineffective (e.g., have no, small, or inconsistent effects on learner outcomes). Special education has a long history of using practices that, though appealing in some ways, have little or no positive impact on learner outcomes. In order to bridge the gap between research and practice, educators must be aware of which practices work (and prioritize their use) and which do not (and avoid their use). In this volume, each chapter describes two practices one supported as effective by research and one shown by research to be ineffective in critical areas of education for students with learning and behavioral disabilities. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues need to be an initial consideration in design and deployment of electronic transmitters or receivers, or in deployed systems containing both. This book provides methodologies for defining EMC requirements for the device, platform, site, and arena levels and techniques for performing predictions and calculations to achieve electromagnetic compatibility. While the book considers all transmitting and receiving systems and devices, it emphasizes military applications. Examples of the occurrence of electromagnetic problems are interference when devices are physically close and operating at the same, or similar, frequencies. In order to address this, the authors discuss several new approaches in mathematical development, such as the calculation of probability of interference based on frequency difference between two devices and the interference probability due to pulse to pulse interference. In theory, all the devices' parameters should be available for analysis, but in practice, missing data is not uncommon. The book aims to define default values that allow the performance of EMC analysis in cases where the data is missing, such as antenna patterns, intercardinal antenna gain and near field approximations. Informality and informal employment are wide-spread and growing phenomena in all regions of the world, in particular in low and middle income economies. A large part of economic activity in these countries is not registered or under-declared and many workers enter employment relationships that do not provide any or only partial protection, work with little or no physical capital, receive low wages and work under conditions that can be hazardous to their health. Across many countries, national, federal and district level governments are increasingly pursuing approaches to school improvement that seek to achieve so-called ‘bottom-up’ change. That is, improvements to teaching and learning that are generated by teachers, and subsequently shared horizontally and vertically within educational systems. Often such change relies on educators engaging in ‘evidence-informed practice’: improvements to teaching in learning that are grounded in data and research.
