Wherever we live or whatever we do, disability will always be a part of us. With increasing age, we will all surely encounter disability. Disability can arise from age or outside forces, such as a traffic accident. It is estimated that more than a billion people, or about 15% of the world's population, live with some form of disability. Disability research is therefore important not only for the individual and the family, but also for the society to adapt and facilitate a better quality of life for this segment of the population. For example, research from the United States found significant disparities in the prevalence of disability between urban and rural residents, with rural residents having the highest prevalence of disability. Such epidemiology and survey research can be important tools for public health and can guide policy makers to allocate budgets, service facilities and expertise. In this book, we have gathered recent disability research from around the world that we hope will be of interest to the reader.

In this book we have brought together research from international clinicians, practitioners and researchers from various backgrounds and communities. Some of the papers were presented at the annual Stop Youth Suicide conference in Lexington, Kentucky in November 2019 and some at the Fifth International Conference on Child Health, Development and Welfare in Jerusalem, Israel during December 2019. The topics in this international potpourri of presentations are from a college experience program for people with intellectual disabilities in New York, migration from South Korea, which has emerged as one of the world's largest diaspora nations, discussions on abuse head trauma and adolescent suicide to risk factors for impaired early childhood development in rural India. This book furnishes a rich description and discussion on the theory and practice of DPYD (digital positive youth development) games, in particular, design, implementation, and initial evaluation. Chapters show a concerted and creative effort in providing preventive measures on commonly found adolescent developmental issues. They also demonstrate that the newly developed and specially designed games are in general efficient and effective measures to promote youth development and prevent some common adolescent problems from deteriorating in contemporary urban societies. Initial users' qualitative feedback supports their effectiveness. Findings related to motivational variables such as self-efficacy, situational interest, goal orientation, and engagement variables are discussed. It is noteworthy that the game on interpersonal relationship has a special feature of promoting cross-cultural understanding of the values behind Chinese and Western (English-speaking only) cultures.

Break the Cycle of Children's Environmental Health Disparities (BTC) is an annual collaborative interdisciplinary research and training program involving university students in academic tracks that focus on the impact of adverse social, economic and environmental factors on children's health, development and education. The target populations are communities where environmental hazards are related to circumstances of social and economic disadvantage. Each student develops a project that focuses on preventing or reducing adverse environmental factors to benefit the children who live in these communities. At the end of the project, the students present their studies and findings at a national conference and write papers which are then published. The papers in this publication represent the work of students who participated in the 14th Annual Break the Cycle program. The phrase "Break the Cycle" in this context uses the ecological construct of the cycle of environmental health disparities and represents a framework for reducing health disparities and promoting health equity among children who are vulnerable as a consequence of adverse social, economic, environmental and political factors. The student projects are intended to break the cycle and liberate children from the intergenerational cycle of health disparities, so they can grow and develop to their full potential. Through this academic process, the students gain knowledge, insight and skills to enable them to advance in their careers and become future leaders.

The "Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS)" is a World Health Organization (WHO) and United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collaborative effort in helping countries to assess ten behavioural risk and protective factors, including "alcohol use, dietary behaviours, drug use, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, sexual behaviours, tobacco use, violence and unintentional injury" among adolescents. In this book, we deal with multiple behavioural non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factors in 15 countries: Philippines, Mozambique, Laos, Kuwait, Oman, Guatemala, Timor-Leste, Wallis and Futuna, Cook Islands, Afghanistan, Maldives, French Polynesia, Fiji, Bahrain and Benin. The results of the various papers will inform stakeholders of the relevance of school and youth health programmes and related policies targeting behavioural NCD risk factors in the adolescent population.

In the traditional Chinese culture, families showed several characteristics. First, male members generally held a superior position whereas females typically occupied a submissive role. Second, under the strong influence of Confucianism, filial piety was strongly upheld with a central focus on the father-son relationship. Third, because of the importance of maintaining harmony in the family, the collective interest (ie: family interest) was placed above individual interest. In this book we try to convey the traditional and contemporary influences of parenting and family life in Hong Kong. We also attempt to conduct more theoretical integration and consider ways that can help to promote the family life of adolescents in the Chinese setting.

About one in four youths used a tobacco product during the past 30 days. By school level, this is approximately three in ten high school students and one in eight middle school students. Since 2014, e-cigarettes have been the most commonly used tobacco product among youths. It is reasonable to assume that many young smokers are practicing this habit while with friends or at parties, exposing their friends and peers to hazardous passive smoking, which is also the case for smaller children exposed to their parental smoking. Smoking is just one important public health issue in childhood and adolescence, but there are many other issues in this period of our development. In this book we have gathered some recent research on children and youth from various places around the world on many topics, not just limited to smoking, which we hope will be of interest to the reader.
