The art of printing did not invent the book, but it spread the written word so that more people became aware of it. Since letterpress printing, increasing circles of readers could participate in written culture across the barriers of class society. With the art of printing, the written word thus became a medium for the man in the street too. This publication deals with how letterpress printing became a part of the everyday life in Denmark. How more and more connections in everyday life were described or prescribed, and how the medium opened up new schemes of things that could change everyday life: Life as a prescript, as a tale, stories, history -- a sign of the times.

In the interwar period art revealed itself as part of the social and ideological order. The work of art became a point of intersection for the modern, unstable and ambiguous world. Works of art produced in these decades reflect a range of discourses on power and subjectivity. They contribute to the foundation of the post-war development of aesthetic pluralism and point out the socially conditioned framings of the Fine Arts. During the last decades, research in the field of interwar art has reworked and reconceptualised existing notions on the period. This book offers four new approaches which also contribute to reflections on methodological questions regarding the changes in the disciple of Art History since the early 1970s. The articles discuss topics such as Le Corbusier's connection with the French fascist movement, the position of women in the avant garde movement, Giorgio de Chirico's play with kitsch and avant garde practices, and the semiotics of the surrealist image.

The combination of nature and health, however, is not of a recent date. Since the end of the 18th century, the natural ideal has been a permanent element in writings on health. But the arguments have constantly been made with and for a new nature and a new healthiness. Health literature deals with more than just the physiological well-being; it also deals with definitions of the good society and the good life. It is these ideals of health information and nature with which Kroppens natur (the Nature of the Body) deals.

A semantic/syntactic study of the Italian nominal system with special reference to the use of articles, including the use of the zero article in the non-determined noun phrase. The study takes as its point of departure the meaning of the subject-lexemes and the logico-semantic distinction between intension, i.e. the meaning of abstract concepts and features, and extension, i.e. the pointing out of entities in a world endowed with the indicated features. The author proposes a parallel distinction for the noun phrase, motivated by the fact that non-determined noun phrases in Italian normally only expresses the abstract concept of category, i.e. features by which entities may be categorised (eg: Ho bevuto vino; scrivo libri), whereas the determined syntagma actualises entities (Ho bevuto del vino/il vino; Ho scritto un libro/dei libri/i libri).

Text in Danish. Holger Pedersen (1867-1953) was one of Denmark's greatest scholars within Indoeuropean studies. During the years 1892-1896 he travelled extensively in Europe to broaden his field of language studies. His letters to scholars in Denmark provide a unique insight into the working methods of a young linguist. The letters, preserved in the Royal Library in Copenhagen, have been reproduced in the original orthography in the book.

Identification and classification of a private Danish collection of seals, which were acquired in Baghdad over a number of years more than 30 years ago. The collection covers a period extending from the late Ubaid to the Sasanian dynasty, c. 4000 BC -- 642 AD, and includes twenty-five cylinder seals from the Late Uruk period to Early Dynastic I, nine Early Dynastic II-III seals, eleven Akkadian and Post-Akkadian, six Neo-Sumerian, eight Old Babylonian, three seals of the second half of the second millennium BC, thirteen Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian stamp and cylinder seals, three seals of the second half of the first millennium BC, three bullae and a stamp seal of Seleucid date, thirty Sasanian stamp seals, and finally four fragmentary seals of uncertain date. The seals are listed in chronological order by period. The middle chronology has been used for dating.

A primary source collection of the Akkadian and Sumerian texts housed at the University of Pennsylvania.Old Sumerian and Old Akkadian Texts in Philadelphia is the third and final volume of published cuneiform texts housed at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Presented in parallel transliteration, these 433 unique texts were excavated between 1889 and 1900 and include contemporary Sumerian literature and science. From temple administration documents to ration lists and votive items, this collection of primary materials provides insight into the lives of hundreds of men and women employed at the temple in the city of Ekur and sheds light on various ancient social relationships not otherwise described in previous sources.

This issue opens with an in-depth analysis by Antti Lindfors of the ways that satire is intertwined with moral understandings, bringing recent discussions from the anthropology of ethics as well as emotions to the stand-up comedian's stage in Finland and elsewhere. Ethical issues are also at stake in Britta Lundgrens's examination of how Swedish health-care providers involved in the threat of an epidemic as well as adverse side-effects of vaccinations face double-bind situations and deal with their own doubts. Then Niels Jul Nielsen and Janus Jul Olsen explain how the neoliberal transformations in Denmark's social welfare system have resulted from the loss of a perception of the working class as a potential threat to societal stability and peace. Anastasiya Astapova's article which provides the inspiration for this issue's cover art, looks at the folklore of Potemkinism in Belarus, local attitudes and narratives around the "façade" performance. And finally, Jernej Mleku explores the symbolic complexity and material significance of the burek in Solvenia, one of the country's most popular and yet disrespected foods.

Disorder and order are among the principles through which the articles in this issue are connected. Peter Jan Margry grasps the exuberant excesses surrounding the Dutch monarch's birthday with the term "mobocracy" and sees in the suspension of rules a means to reconcile Dutch republicanism with the anachronism of a monarchical system. Ongoing disorder of a rather different nature is experienced by migrant workers from Poland in Denmark. Niels Jul Nielsen and Marie Sandberg accompany them at work and in their different home settings and analyse the divergent interplay of the Polish labour niche and family dynamics on different constructions of "orderly work conditions". Stefan Groth uncovers the structuring power of new tools and events to measure performance in recreational cycling; competitive norms are shown to permeate a leisure activity. Old age, too, is not free from the structuring arm of social and health regimes. Through his analysis of billiards a game favoured by the older men he studies Aske Juul Lassen critiques aging policies striving to "activate" the elderly and overlooking the rhythms inherent to a traditional game and activity. The issue concludes with Tuuli Lähdesmäki's comparison of how local heritage actors choose to narrate the transnationally launched European Heritage Label. Within an initiative to foster Europeanization, she finds actors formulating European identities in different moulds.

The German Plenipotentiary in Denmark, Werner Best, reported back several times a day to the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin about conditions in occupied Denmark between November 1942 and May 1945. In the opposite direction came directives and correspondence from the German Foreign Office to Denmark. This correspondence makes up the core in this publication of primary research. The work is supplemented with primary sources from other German authorities. Mainly from the highest ranking officers of the Wehrmacht, the Navy, German Police and for the unit that held responsibility for dealing with munitions contracts with Danish businesses. Werner Best was ordered, in April 1945, to burn his correspondence from the years 1942-1945. The letters have, however, been reconstructed after a thorough examination of especially Danish and German archives. During the research, many of the sources researchers once thought of as lost, have now been re-found. The work consists of 10 volumes, containing 2,900 annotated documents all in German that together give a picture of how the occupying German forces regarded and dealt with occupied Denmark. The period was one of the bloodiest and most dramatic periods in modern Danish history. Most of the documents have never before been published, and many have as yet not been referenced by researchers of the period. Volume 10 includes a dozen appendices with an overview of executions, German acts of terror, Danish workers in Germany, the prisoners of the Gestapo and Danes deported to Germany. Furthermore, the work of Rector Dr Aage Trommers on the incidences of railway sabotage is printed for the first time. The work was originally made for the rector's doctoral dissertation on the same subject in 1971.
