In the decades between its debut performance in Paris in 1909 and the death of impresario Sergei Diaghilev in 1929, the Ballets Russes was an unrivalled sensation not only in France but in London, New York and the other cities it toured. Attention has often been centred on the links between Diaghilev's troupe and modernist art and music, but there has been surprisingly little written concerning the Ballets' role in tastemaking and trendsetting. St. Thomas Aquinas’s commentaries on the Pastoral Epistles are distinctive and overlooked theological resources. The Ideal Bishop includes a review of the theology of the episcopacy found in St. Thomas’s principal contemporaries including Peter Lombard, St. Albert the Great, and St. Bonaventure of Bagnoregio. It also provides a conspectus of the same in the integrated corpus of Aquinas along with an introduction to St. Thomas’s lectures on the PE, their dating, the provenance of manuscripts, and their method of theological development. But the heart of this book is an examination of the theology and spirituality of the episcopacy found in the lectures on ­ Timothy, ’ Timothy, and Titus. Particular attention is devoted to Aquinas’s treatment of the nature, purpose, requisite virtues, disqualifying vices, special duties, and particular graces of the episcopal office.In his commentary, Aquinas identifies the episcopacy as a state of perfection wherein the prelate ought both to enjoy profound, mystical intimacy with Christ and to love and serve others by leading them to that same intimacy. In so doing, the prelate promotes ecclesial unity and secures his own salvation. Episcopal teaching, governing, and liturgical duties constitute the bishop’s fundamental mission which is established and empowered by the act of episcopal consecration received by the bishop elect. Aquinas grounds the efficacy of the bishop’s pastoral work on the quality of his interior life. Thus construed the episcopal office demands profound holiness, erudition, and pastoral skill. This work of Thomistic ressourcement substantively benefits the contemporary Church in her project of bringing the perennial truth of the Gospel more efficaciously to all, particularly with respect to the exercise of the episcopal office.

This is the story of West Malling airfield, from its earliest days through its role in the Second World War - when several dramatic and tragic events occurred - and beyond into the Cold War. Opened as a private landing ground after the First World War, the airfield at West Malling, then known as Kings Hill, became home to the Maidstone School of Flying in 1930\. It was then renamed West Malling Airfield, and, in 1932, Maidstone Airport. The airfield's RAF role came to the fore in June 1940, by when the station had been fitted with a concrete runway. The first aircraft arrived on 8 June 1940\. As the UK's first designated night fighter base, over the years that followed RAF West Malling was home to many famous pilots, men such as John Cunningham, Peter Townsend, Bob Braham and even Guy Gibson, later of Dambusters fame. During the summer of 1944, Mosquitoes, Spitfires and Mustang Mk.3s successfully destroyed many V-1s, as well as played their part in the D-Day landings. Following the war, units such as Nos. 25 and 85 squadrons were equipped with Meteor NF fighters and de Havilland Vampires and Venoms, continuing West Malling's strategic night fighter role into the Cold War. No.500 (Kent's Own) Squadron also adopted RAF West Malling as its home in this period. A US Navy Facility Flight was also based at the airfield in the 1960s. After closure as an operational air station in 1969, West Malling re-acquired its civilian guise, hosting a Gliding School, Short Brothers and several major Great Warbirds Air Displays during the 1970s and 1980s, until eventually closing completely as an airfield, for re-development. Anthony J. Moor's exhaustively researched and highly-illustrated book is the first to tell the full story of the part West Malling played in the defence of the United Kingdom, and how it served the RAF for twenty-eight action-packed years.

The eleventh volume of Coin Hoards is dedicated solely to hoards of Greek coins found in the Cimmerian Bosporus. The inventory contains records of 271 new hoards or re-evaluations of old ones, and provides an indispensable supplement to the Inventory of Greek Coin Hoards and previous volumes of Coin Hoards. The volume includes many hitherto unrecorded hoards from the early 5th century BC to the 6th century AD. The majority of them were recently acquired by museums in Simferopol, Kerch, Tman, Phanagoria, Temryuk, Anapa, Krasnodar, Novorossiysk, Moscow and St Petersburg from the archaeological missions which had conducted wide-scale excavations in the Krasnodar region and the eastern Crimea. Among the significant recent finds are large hoards of Late Archaic silver coins and Late Bosporan staters from Phanagoria, as well as a group of purses from Mithradates VI's residence there, burnt in 63 BC; a Myrmicium hoard of Cyzicenes; big hoards of Bosporan gold staters from the Taman Peninsula; huge hoards of 3rd-century BC bronze coins (more than 21000 pieces) and coins of the Mithradatic period (15000 and 8000 coins) from the Asiatic Bosporus; and a group of hoards from Mithradates III's fortress in Parosta, a small Bosporan city, which met its end during the Roman-Bosporan War of AD 45-49, etc. Nine notes are devoted to brief publication of a group of the most significant new hoards, related mostly to Phanagoria and the Asiatic Bosporus. Huge Phanagorian hoards of the early 1st century BC are of special interest, containing coins of Euboea, Delos and Crete, the Pontus, western and southern Anatolia and the adjacent islands. These non-native coins are exceptional finds for the Cimmerian Bosporus, as well as in the numismatic profile of the northern Black Sea region as a whole. The distant coins form evidence for the voyages of Phanagorian merchantmen to the eastern Mediterranean - to Hierapytna and Patara. These studies significantly expand our understanding of the Bosporan coinage and Greek economy of this period. The volume is accompanied by 311 plates.
