Egypt Land is the first comprehensive analysis of the connections between constructions of race and representations of ancient Egypt in nineteenth-century America. Scott Trafton argues that the American mania for Egypt was directly related to anxieties over race and race-based slavery. He shows how the fascination with ancient Egypt among both black and white Americans was manifest in a range of often contradictory ways. Both groups likened the power of the United States to that of the ancient Egyptian empire, yet both also identified with ancient Egypt’s victims. The book provides theoretical methods of connecting discrete-variable quantum information processing to continuous-variable one. It covers the two major fields of quantum information processing, quantum communication and quantum computation, leading to achievement of a long-sought full security of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (QKD) and proposal of a resource-efficient method for optical quantum computing. Firstly, the book provides a security of continuous-variable QKD against arbitrary attacks under a realistic condition such as finite communication rounds and the use of digitized information processing. The book also provides the unified view for conventionally used approximate Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) codes, which encodes qudits on a continuous-variable system, enabling direct comparison between researches based on different approximations. The book finally proposes a resource-efficient method to realize the universal optical quantum computation using the GKP code via the direct preparation of the GKP magic state instead of GKP Pauli states. Feasibility of the proposed protocol is discussed based on the existing experimental proposals for the GKP state preparation.

Queering the Color Line transforms previous understandings of how homosexuality was “invented” as a category of identity in the United States beginning in the late nineteenth century. Analyzing a range of sources, including sexology texts, early cinema, and African American literature, Siobhan B. Somerville argues that the emerging understanding of homosexuality depended on the context of the black/white “color line,” the dominant system of racial distinction during this period. This book thus critiques and revises tendencies to treat race and sexuality as unrelated categories of analysis, showing instead that race has historically been central to the cultural production of homosexuality.At about the same time that the 1896 Supreme Court Plessy v. Ferguson decision hardened the racialized boundary between black and white, prominent trials were drawing the public’s attention to emerging categories of sexual identity. Somerville argues that these concurrent developments were not merely parallel but in fact inextricably interrelated and that the discourses of racial and sexual “deviance” were used to reinforce each other’s terms. She provides original readings of such texts as Havelock Ellis’s late nineteenth-century work on “sexual inversion,” the 1914 film A Florida Enchantment, the novels of Pauline E. This book is an integral part of the epic's three-book movement that narrates one of the largest battles in Roman history. It opens with the dispute between the consuls Paulus and Varro over giving battle, in the face of hostile omens and Hannibal's record of successful combat. On the eve of the battle, the Roman soldier Solymus accidentally kills his father Satricus, thereby presenting an omen of disaster for the Roman army. After Hannibal and Varro encourage their troops, the initial phase of the battle commences. The gods descend to the battlefield, and Mars and Minerva fight the sole full-scale theomachy in Latin epic. Aeolus summons the Vulturnus wind at Juno's request to devastate the Roman ranks. After the gods have departed, Hannibal's elephant troops advance and scatter the Roman forces. The book ends by recapitulating the opening episode: Varro admits his mistake in giving battle and flees the battlefield. This volume is the first full-scale commentary in English devoted exclusively to Punica 9. It features the Latin text with a critical apparatus and a parallel English translation. In Sensory Experiments, Erica Fretwell excavates the nineteenth-century science of psychophysics and its theorizations of sensation to examine the cultural and aesthetic landscape of feeling in nineteenth-century America. Fretwell demonstrates how psychophysics—a scientific movement originating in Germany and dedicated to the empirical study of sensory experience—shifted the understandings of feeling from the epistemology of sentiment to the phenomenological terrain of lived experience. Through analyses of medical case studies, spirit photographs, perfumes, music theory, recipes, and the work of canonical figures ranging from Kate Chopin and Pauline Hopkins to James Weldon Johnson and Emily Dickinson, Fretwell outlines how the five senses became important elements in the biopolitical work of constructing human difference along the lines of race, gender, and ability. In its entanglement with social difference, psychophysics contributed to the racialization of aesthetics while sketching out possibilities for alternate modes of being over and against the figure of the bourgeois liberal individual. While airlines such as Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines became synonymous with service and reliability around the world, one airline in South America was enjoying similar status within the Americas. Varig began life in the southernmost state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, following the vision of a German immigrant. The company, founded in 1927 in the city of Porto Alegre with a small seaplane, soon began to expand its route network beyond Rio Grande do Sul and into the more remote areas of Brazil. In 1945, the Ruben Berta Foundation was set up, which allowed the company's shareholding to be distributed amongst all its employees, a situation almost unique in aviation. For almost 80 years, until it was wound up in 2006, Varig continually expanded its network, both in Brazil and around the world, introduced the Air Bridge between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo and set up a round-the-world cargo network. During its existence, Varig operated more than 30 different types of aircraft. Illustrated with over 140 photographs, this book details Varig's origins, its growth and the reasons it eventually went out of business.
