Bluemoose Books Ltd SLOOT
A post-postmodern crime novel set on the clean streets of Dublin’s leafiest suburb, Sloot has at its heart an accidental detective who’d rather write his own Celtic-screwball-noir than solve the crime, and a narrator who loses the plot. Literally. Sound complicated? Not so. Thanks to a revolutionary structure, The Inquisitive Bullet, it’s simplicity itself. Detours include proof that psychoanalysis is the oldest profession, validation of the dictum `For what is comedy but tragedy with loose trousers’, and a brief aside on the possibility of an Irishman having multiple birth mothers. While the plot bullet speeds, inquisitively, towards its target – the final full stop.

Cuneiform Press Ernie Stomach - Uh
Uh is an artist's book originally published in 1971 (in a run of 500 copies) by a 21-year-old Richard Hell, and issued under the pseudonym Ernie Stomach through Hell's Genesis : Grasp Press. Stomach/Hell's aim was to create "a version of the Roman alphabet in which the glyphs correspond in their differentiations to lower case block-lettered forms, but stripped to the naked elliptical minimum … using X-Acto Knifed mylar templates and a felt tip pen." Now, with the advent of font software, Stomach has been able to recreate the book as he would have done it at the time were such technology available. This book is a facsimile of the original, but for the improved precision and consistency of the strokes of the "alphabet peepshow." In an enclosed leaflet, Hell discusses the relationship between poetry, typography and punk aesthetics that informed the making of Uh.

Princeton University Press Prophecy and People in Renaissance Italy
In the midst of the religious ferment, foreign invasions, and internal political strife that beset Italy before the full effects of the Counter-Reformation, the powerful and humble alike turned to popular prophecy for guidance and solace. Ottavia Niccoli examines here the forms of these prophecies--including interpretations of natural disasters, abnormal births, floods, and planetary conjunctions--and gives examples of how they were transmitted from the lower classes to the elite through street singers, apocalyptic preachers, astrologers, and printers. By tracing the ongoing revision of the prophecies, Niccoli reveals them as an indication of how various levels of society viewed events of the time, as a form of propaganda for such causes as anti-Lutheranism, and as a reflection of the interaction between "high" and "low" culture. Based on popular leaflets, diaries, civic chronicles, and iconographic sources, this book explores the expression of a culture in which nature, religion, and politics formed a unified system with a uniform code of interpretation. It connects the decline of prophecy in Italy with the end of the Italian wars and the beginning of the Counter-Reformation, when popular preaching was banned and charismatic religion discouraged.

The History Press Ltd The Beatles in Posters: A Collection of Concert Artwork by Tony Booth
Artist Tony Both worked in Liverpool during the early 1960s, just around the corner from The Cavern Club and close to the Beatles' manager Brian Epstein's office in Whitechapel. Tony's work caught Epstein's eye, and he would go on to produce posters, printed leaflets and a wide variety of publicity and display materials for Epstein's artists, most notably for a young four-piece beat combo called the Beatles. Alongside his work for Epstein, Tony produced hand-painted gig posters for many promoters, including Sam Leach, Allan Williams and The Cavern Club's DJ Bob Wooler, who also promoted many of the big events. Tony's original posters now fetch a considerable sum of money, and The Beatles in Posters features these as well as exact replicas of those that have been lost to time. This is the first book of its type and is a must-buy for all fans of the Fab Four and the Merseybeat scene.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Drone War Vietnam
While the use of drones is now commonplace in modern warfare, it was in its infancy during the Vietnam War, not to mention revolutionary and top secret. Drones would play an important - and today largely unheralded - role in the bloody, two-decade US air war over Vietnam and surrounding countries in the 1960s and '70s. Drone aircraft spotted targets for manned US bombers, jammed North Vietnamese radars and scattered propaganda leaflets, among other missions. This book explores that obscure chapter of history. DRONE WAR: VIETNAM is based on military records, official histories and published first-hand accounts from early drone operators, as well as on a close survey of existing scholarship on the topic. In their fledgling efforts to send robots instead of human beings on the most dangerous aerial missions, US operators in South-East Asia in the 1960s and '70s wrote the first chapter in the continuing tale of autonomous warfare.

Today, Sydenham and Forest Hill are attractive and popular places to live, with good access to green spaces and local amenities. The Merlin Press Ltd Rolling Stonemason: An Autobiography
Fred Bower had a full adventurous life and wrote about it in his own vivid and racy idiom. He was born in Boston, Mass. in 1871. Brought up in Liverpool, he recalls a city of two camps, when it was a common sight to see gory battles on St Patrick's day and July 12th. His travels and his work took him to Donara, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Guelph, Ithaca, London, Manchester, New York, Peapack (NJ), Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Titusville, Trenton, West Newton, not to mention time spent tramp steaming all the way to Australia and back. He combined the stonemason's craft with diverse activities: prospecting for gold, and working for the Labour Movement. His life the labour movement is interwoven with tales of Francisco Ferrer, Victor Grayson, Jim Larkin, Tom Mann, Philip Snowden and others. He tells you of that dreadful 'bloody Sunday' of 1911 in Liverpool and of his notorious DON'T SHOOT leaflet, inciting soldiers not to kill strikers. He left a secret message to posterity buried in the foundations of Liverpool Cathedral- a story that resurfaces in Liverpool papers. An autobiography of a Socialist, Syndicalist, Tramp, and Traveller. He died in 1942.

C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd Many Rivers, One Sea: Bangladesh and the Challenge of Islamist Militancy
A perennial frontier for Islamic orthodoxy, Bangladesh is witnessing an alarming rise in Islamist-inspired assassinations and terrorist attacks. In July 2016, the world's attention fell upon a café in a leafy Dhaka neighbourhood as the barbarity of a distant 'Caliphate' was visited on this corner of South Asia. Twenty-nine died in the assault on the Holey Bakery, affixing an unbidden nightmare to the image of a supposedly tolerant Muslim nation. Joseph Allchin probes Bangladesh's recent and distant past as he investigates how it has become the latest front in world extremism. Delving into the local and global differences between political actors, he exposes the continued influence of the country's independence struggle on today's allegiances, and scrutinises the careers of two long-term rivals: current prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and Khaleda Zia, who held the office in 1991-6 and 2001-6. This unerring investigation examines the relationship between radical Islam and the Bangladeshi political class, laying bare the extremist forces that bedevil the country's present and future.
