Plural Publishing Inc The Role of the Speech-Language Pathologist in RTI: Implementing Multiple Tiers of Student Support
The Role of the Speech-Language Pathologist in RtI: Implementing Multiple Tiers of Student Support" is an innovative resource for school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs). The author examines the current interaction among special and general educators, and identifies how SLPs best fit into a multi-tiered/response to instruction process. This collaboration requires school staff share the same vision on the operation of the system, understand their respective roles, and merge the curricular with the developmental perspective to build basic skills in support of student performance growth.General educators have traditionally utilized the language of curriculum (e.g., standards, pacing guides, formative and summative assessments) to talk about student goals and achievement. Special educators, including SLPs, most often utilize the language of development (e.g., norms, percentile ranks, development milestones) to measure student growth. The Role of the Speech-Language Pathologist in RtI assesses this apparent clash in nomenclature and identifies new ways for collaboration and cooperation among faculty and administration. In order for the SLP to be an effective partner in the development and implementation of RtI, the author proposes that SLPs should:1. understand the "language" of general education,2. be able to "translate" the curricular needs of students into skill-based units that can be measured and progress-monitored,3. have full understanding of the developmental progression of skills and how that progression links to curriculum standards, and4. be knowledgeable on evidence-based practices that can have a meaningful impact on closing developmental gaps and result in higher achievement outcomes. This text provides the blueprint for the implementation of a system of student support that was envisioned in the 2004 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA).Unlike other books on RtI, this essential resource addresses the very specific roles that different school-level professionals must play to make the system effective. No other text provides SLPs with such a comprehensive, school-wide perspective on the different roles in the process, the different "languages" used by the professionals in those roles, and how to navigate those different perspectives.

Plural Publishing Inc Intervention for Toddlers with Communication Delays: Practical Strategies
"Intervention for Toddlers with Communication Delays: Practical Strategies" was created out of concern for the increasing number of children identified with developmental language disorders, including those with autism spectrum disorder, and the lack of adequate resources for them. This manual addresses communication skills for toddlers between the ages of 0-3 years old with communication delays. Since language and overall communication skills are so closely associated with future school success, therapists and caregivers should be equipped to build these skills in children. This manual has been designed with a view to the difficulties faced by therapists and caregivers of children with communication delays during day-to-day interactions. The activities can be used in a wide variety of settings. They can be used in the therapy rooms of speech-language pathologists (SLPs), preschool classrooms, daycare settings, and children's homes. The activities are especially ideal for SLPs who conduct home visits to provide intervention in children's natural, daily settings. This manual is intended to guide the therapist or caregiver in selecting the target skills that a child should be trained in. The simple lesson plans are intended to get the therapist or caregiver started on the process of stimulating the child in each of the domains that he or she needs help in, at their current level of functioning. Language development has two major aspects: receptive skills, or the understanding of language, and expressive skills, or the speaking of the language. In children with communication delays, both of these aspects need to be looked at, since a child who cannot understand language will not learn to speak it. In the case of a child with a developmental language disorder, one of the aspects maybe selectively impaired. In this manual are activities and ideas that are aimed at making the learning and use of language fun and fruitful. Also included are "Tech Tips" with recommended YouTube videos, websites, Pinterest sites, and other online resources. These online resources provide the therapist or caregiver with excellent ideas for products and practical intervention strategies that can be used for a variety of purposes when serving young children with special needs.

This manual addresses cognitive, social, and emotional skills for toddlers between the ages of 0-3 years old. Learning is often defined as a process that brings together cognitive, emotional, and environmental influences and experiences. Changes and enhancement of knowledge, skills, values, and world views are often based on these experiences and the learning that results from them. The lesson plans in this manual have been developed on the basis of such associative learning. For undergraduate hearing science students without hard science backgrounds, this text aims to decompress and facilitate the comprehension of difficult and often cumbersome concepts in order to master the basic concepts in hearing science. This textbook is also a useful supplemental or recommended reference for speech and hearing combined courses that require more coverage of hearing science than currently available in speech-oriented textbooks. "'Key features of "Basic Fundamentals in Hearing Science" include:"' * An extensive number of figures and illustrations for improved overall comprehension of the subject matter * Clear descriptions of the many and various forms of sound wave phenomenon, and of auditory anatomy and physiology--from the outer ear to the auditory cortex * An overview of scientific measurement scales and notation including the use of logarithms, exponential and scientific notation, and the metric system * An opening chapter that defines and elucidates the meaning, practice, and philosophy of science--with an emphasis on theory-driven research--including a practical guide for the writing of a scientific manuscript * Chapters devoted to the basic terminology used in hearing science and the application of those basic principles and terms, as well as a chapter that addresses basic nervous system terminology and describes the structure and function of the twelve pairs of cranial nerves * A chapter that deals exclusively with the structure and function of the auditory system ================================================================== "The text is written with meticulous and thorough attention to detail and accuracy. This is especially apparent with regard to the formulas and tables provided for the computations of the Bel, decibel, and RMS amplitude. An additional feature that adds to the attractiveness and flair of the book is the frequent reference to historic discoveries and to those who made them. Concepts presented in the text are beautifully complemented by illustrations, graphs, and equations. This is a book I wish I had had when I was a student, and I believe it will become a first choice textbook among undergraduate and graduate students. It will provide quick answers to questions, both simple and complex, and will provide ever-deepening insights into hearing science when knowledge of details is the goal." -- From the Foreword by James A. Kaltenbach, PhD, Director of Otology Research, The Cleveland Clinic

Plural Publishing Inc Paul Broca and the Origins of Language in the Brain
Pierre Paul Broca was a child prodigy. He fulfilled his promise by becoming a brilliant neurologist, surgeon, and anthropologist. Perhaps his most lasting contribution to neuroscience was his proposal that the third frontal convolution of the left cerebral hemisphere of the brain is the seat of that most human attribute, the production of articulate speech and language. This notion was advanced by detailing the autopsy findings, with quite evident and circumscribed lesions, in the brains of his two now famous cases, Leborgne (known as "Tan," for that is all he could say) and Lelong. Broca's presentations were milestones in the history of the neuroscience of language and the brain, but they were only more defined echoes of ideas that had preceded him. Undergraduate and graduate students as well as practicing professionals and clinicians in psychology, neurolinguistics, cognitive psychology, communication science and disorders, neurology, neurosurgery, neuropsychiatry, nursing and health-related professions, and philosophy of science will be interested in this book.It is different from others like it in that it presents aspects of the personal lives of these French brains who sparked the notion of a place in the brain for human language. It embraces a more empathic and humanistic approach to understanding people and their disorders as well as to what may drive the process of science and patients as "specimens."

Plural Publishing Inc Increasing Language Skills of Students from Low-Income Backgrounds: Practical Strategies for Professionals
This book, now in its second edition, is a practical resource that helps speech-language pathologists, educators, and other professionals understand how poverty affects children's developing language and provides strategies that support these children and their families. The author, a university professor and part-time itinerant speech-language pathologist in the schools, balances research and practical, "Monday morning" strategies for professionals who want to help low-socioeconomic status (SES) students from preschool through high school succeed in school and, eventually, in society. The text presents up-to-date information about the "culture of poverty" and background information on factors impacting low-income children's language skills. It goes on to provide practical strategies for nonbiased assessment, intervention, structuring the school environment, and working with families.Helpful new features in the second edition include: Chapter highlights at the end of each chapter References to many new research studies Content grounded in principles of evidence-based practice Practice recommendations based in research from a variety of disciplines, such as social science, speech-language pathology, neuroscience, and education New case studies of the author's actual clients Because the Great Recession has rendered so many more families homeless, the second edition includes much more information about serving homeless students, including mitigating the effects of chaos through increasing executive functioning skills. The author works directly with homeless people on the streets and therefore includes a broad-based (hands-on and research) perspective about meeting the unique needs of this population. The second edition contains new information about using Response to Intervention (RtI) to serve low-SES students in general education classroom settings. Updated technology recommendations (e.g., using iPad and YouTube technology) are presented. Plural Publishing Inc Early Development of Children with Hearing Loss
Until recently, congenital hearing loss was a condition that generally curtailed a child's ability to develop the language of the ambient community and to succeed in mainstream educational settings. Two technological advances have radically changed that outlook for children with hearing loss: methods for screening hearing at birth and cochlear implants. This new book, based around a large-scale study, examines how closely the developmental trajectories of children with hearing loss matches those of children with normal hearing. While the two changes described above have altered prognoses for children with hearing loss, the author also discusses results from relevant areas of psycholinguistic study where there has also been a shift in perspective among psycholinguists studying the processing of speech that could, and perhaps should, affect intervention. The book unpacks many ideas that have been cornerstones of intervention for young children with hearing loss, and the source of much controversy. It comes at a time when there have been many developments regarding treatment options for children with hearing loss that are difficult to interpret within the context of traditional approaches.

Plural Publishing Inc Newborn Screening Systems: The Complete Perspective
Ensuring optimal health for newborns is a concern shared by a whole host of medical and allied health professionals. Clinicians, researchers, and policymakers from a diverse range of specialties regularly engage in collaborative practice in the first stage of attaining this goal; in the early detection of newborn diseases and disorders. In order to provide the highest quality of service, the Audiologist, for example, must not only be well versed in hearing screening systems, but also in genetic screening, as the new frontier of screening brings an amalgamation of these previously distinct systems. Until now, for those working/studying in the domain of neonatal health, there has been no single, up-to-date, all-inclusive information source on newborn screening programs. This title, by drawing on the knowledge of twenty clinical and research experts from varying fields, provides the only comprehensive text that details the entire collection of screening programs routinely delivered to newborns.Beginning chapters outline preliminary information applicable to all screening systems, for instance, the history and principles of screening, ethical and economic debates, along with thorough description of the conditions routinely screened for. Following are highly detailed chapters dedicated to the specific neonatal screening programs currently in use, as well as complimenting chapters that provide future directions for each field. Additional discussion of topical issues, such as the incorporation of genetic counseling into screening programs, optimal communication with families, and the advent of integrated, non-discipline specific, national data systems, are contained in the final chapters. This title assists the student in viewing their future neonatal clients as whole entities and in understanding the role of the other professionals with whom they shall closely interact. It allows the clinician to easily absorb the activities of screening programs on an international level, and the researcher to consider developments, outside of their immediate field, that may impact on their own research agenda. It allows the policymaker to make enlightened decisions concerning the development of newborn screening programs in their country. In fact, any reader with a rudimentary knowledge of pediatric health and an interest in newborn screening will find this title to be of invaluable worth.

Plural Publishing Inc Meniere's Disease: Evidence and Outcomes
Meniere's disease is the most poorly understood and controversial of the inner ear disorders and yet no critical review of the literature currently exists. Previously accepted models of pathophysiology have been discredited, yet no new mechanisms have been established. Evaluation of treatments has been complicated by the high placebo response of the disorder together with the disease's capricious clinical course. As a result of all these issues, the literature pertaining to Meniere's disease is clouded by anecdotal reports, invalid studies, and science of dubious quality. As a result of these factors, practicing otolaryngologists are understandably confused about how they should best evaluate and treat these patients. Michael Ruckenstein's new book clarifies the current state of understanding of the disorder and develops an evidence - based treatment strategy, using a number of challenging case presentations to illuminate the text. As the principal author of this landmark reference, he brings to bear his extensive expertise in the field as researcher and clinician, collaborating with a number of world-renowned contributing authors.

Plural Publishing Inc Better Hearing with Cochlear Implants: Studies at the Research Triangle Institute
Better Hearing with Cochlear Implants provides a comprehensive account of a decades-long research effort to improve cochlear implants (CIs). The research was conducted primarily at the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) in North Carolina, USA, and the results provided key pillars in the foundation for the present-day devices. Although many of these results were reported in journal articles and other publications, many others were only reported in Quarterly and Final Progress Reports for the National Institutes of Health, which supported the RTI effort. In addition, the Progress Reports provided details that could not be included in the publications. The book is an annotated compilation of the most important sections from the most important reports that gives readers access to previously unpublished data and also a broad and logically organized overview of the research. Four main sections are included to describe the major lines of investigation: design and evaluation of novel processing strategies; electrical stimulation on both sides with CIs; combined electric and acoustic stimulation of the auditory system; and representations of temporal information with CIs.Large advances were made in each of these areas, and readers will appreciate the significance of the research and how the different areas related to each other. Each main section includes an introduction by the authors followed by two or more chapters, and the first chapter in the book describes the work conducted at the RTI in the context of the multiple other efforts worldwide. The book may be used as a primary text on CIs, and it can serve as a multifaceted reference for physicians, audiologists, neuroscientists, designers of neural prostheses, and scientists and other specialists whose work is aimed at the remediation of hearing loss. In all, a fascinating history is presented, which began with little or no speech recognition with CIs for any user and ended with high levels of speech recognition for the great majority of users, including the ability to converse with ease via cell phones. This is a long trip in a short time, and historians of science and technological developments will be interested in knowing how such a rapid development was possible, and about the twists and turns on the way to the destination.
