As a fixture on the SoHo-based experimental art scene of the 1970s and 1980s, Argentine-American video/television-art pioneer and conceptual artist Jaime Davidovich (born 1936) has worked in a broad variety of mediums throughout his long career, including video, painting and installation, while also establishing himself as an activist and TV producer. His weekly variety program, The Live! Show (1979–84), featured performances and interviews with artists such as Laurie Anderson, Eric Bogosian, Tony Oursler and Michael Smith, while other video works included appearances by the artist Stuart Sherman. Davidovich embraced a postmodernist’s eclecticism and a humorous aesthetic. In this lively conversation with scholar Daniel R. Herbert Daniel was a significant and complex figure in Brazilian leftist revolutionary politics and social activism from the mid-1960s until his death in 1992. As a medical student, he joined a revolutionary guerrilla organization but was forced to conceal his sexual identity from his comrades, a situation Daniel described as internal exile. After a government crackdown, he spent much of the 1970s in Europe, where his political self-education continued. He returned to Brazil in 1981, becoming engaged in electoral politics and social activism to champion gay rights, feminism, and environmental justice, achieving global recognition for fighting discrimination against those with HIV/AIDS. The widely accepted view of exile in the Book of Daniel is that it was an ongoing reality which went beyond the initial return of the Babylonian golah (based on Dan. 9). James Seung-Hyun Lee's study, however, reaches deeper to tread the insufficiently explored territory of how the book reconceptualizes exile and how this informs the self-identity of the Danielic group, the final editors of the book. Proposing that for the Danielic group, exile is a place of privilege and a locus of God's revelation and presence, the author shows how this creates a middle space for them that provides a unique historical perspective that both embraces and critiques Babylon and Jerusalem. By identifying themselves with those remaining in exile, the Danielic group claims the legitimacy of their prophetic identity and teaching during the Antiochene persecution.
