This book is an introduction to the theory and application of modes — structures that capture the common underlying algebra of convex sets, affine spaces and certain ordered sets. Modes appear in many branches of mathematics, particularly geometry and combinatorics, and have been used in computer science, economics, physics, and biology. The initial stage of the theory was set out in the authors' research monograph Modal Theory (published in 1985). The present book provides a more complete theory, the result of research conducted during the subsequent 15 years. It contains a clear introduction to selected topics from universal algebra, category theory and model theory, and the foundations of the theory of modes, as well as more advanced topics leading to the forefront of current research in the field.The authors have included a wide range of exercises, usually placed at the end of the section, and indexed alphabetically. A central problem in differential geometry is to relate algebraic properties of the Riemann curvature tensor to the underlying geometry of the manifold. The full curvature tensor is in general quite difficult to deal with. This book presents results about the geometric consequences that follow if various natural operators defined in terms of the Riemann curvature tensor (the Jacobi operator, the skew-symmetric curvature operator, the Szabo operator, and higher order generalizations) are assumed to have constant eigenvalues or constant Jordan normal form in the appropriate domains of definition.The book presents algebraic preliminaries and various Schur type problems; deals with the skew-symmetric curvature operator in the real and complex settings and provides the classification of algebraic curvature tensors whose skew-symmetric curvature has constant rank 2 and constant eigenvalues; discusses the Jacobi operator and a higher order generalization and gives a unified treatment of the Osserman conjecture and related questions; and establishes the results from algebraic topology that are necessary for controlling the eigenvalue structures. This book deals with continuous time dynamic neural networks theory applied to the solution of basic problems in robust control theory, including identification, state space estimation (based on neuro-observers) and trajectory tracking. The plants to be identified and controlled are assumed to be a priori unknown but belonging to a given class containing internal unmodelled dynamics and external perturbations as well. The error stability analysis and the corresponding error bounds for different problems are presented. The level of sophistication of the problems is similar to that encountered in many introductory courses in probability and statistics. Historically, the theory of stability is based on linear differential systems, which are simple and important systems in ordinary differential equations. The research on differential equations and on the theory of stability will, to a certain extent, be influenced by the research on linear differential systems. For differential linear equation systems, there are still many historical open questions attracting mathematicians. This book deals with the theory of linear differential systems developed around the notion of exponential dichotomies. The first author advanced the theory of stability through his research in this field.Several new important results on linear differential systems are presented. As the financial crisis swept the Asia-Pacific, China seemed to be the one economy in the region which had been left “largely unaffected” for various reasons, including its strong economic and financial fundamentals as well as its strong political will to defend the Renminbi, which had so far firmly stood the ground. However, China's economy ended 1998 with only 7.8% growth, slightly falling short of its officially pledged target of 8%. Though China in 1998 was still rated as the best-performing economy in the region, its economic growth momentum had visibly slowed down. The Asian contagion had finally caught up with China.It is not certain if the Chinese economy is entering a slower growth era though, in the short run, China can boost economic growth by expanding domestic demand. Slower economic growth for the country will have significant negative effects on its economic reform programmes and social stability.

Modulation spectrometry of neutrons refers to a measuring principle, characterized by classification of neutron histories in a probabilistic way, not the usual deterministic way. In order to accomplish this, neutron beams entering the sample are modulated by high-transmission, white-beam selectors of the multislit type, such as Fourier or statistical choppers or high-frequency-modulated spin-flippers. In this scheme it is impossible to decide in a unique way through which particular slit any single neutron passed, but the distribution of histories for a large population of neutrons can nevertheless be correctly obtained, by classifying each conceivable history either as a high-probability or as a low-probability event, based on the actual observed state of the neutron selector. So far the principle has been successfully applied to powder diffraction, but it seems to offer extra degrees of freedom if applied to measuring dispersion curves of coherent excitations, such as phonons in single crystals.

At present, existing literature on this subject matter can only be said to relate in minor areas to this work. Important concepts in statistical mechanics, such as frustration, localization, Lifshitz and Griffiths singularities, multicritical points, modulated phases, superselection sectors, spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Haldane phase, strange attractors and the Hausdorff dimension, and many others, are illustrated by exactly soluble lattice models. There are examples of simple lattice models which are shown to give rise to spectacular phase diagrams, with multicritical points and sequences of modulated phases. The models are chosen to enable a concise exposition as well as a connection with real physical systems (as dilute antiferromagnets, spin glasses and modulated magnets). A brief introduction to the properties of dynamical systems, an overview of conformal invariance and the Bethe Ansatz and a discussion of some general methods of statistical mechanics related to spontaneous symmetry breaking, are included in the appendices. A number of exercises are included in the text to help the comprehension of the most representative issues.

This is the revised edition of Berlekamp's famous book, 'Algebraic Coding Theory', originally published in 1968, wherein he introduced several algorithms which have subsequently dominated engineering practice in this field. One of these is an algorithm for decoding Reed-Solomon and Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem codes that subsequently became known as the Berlekamp-Massey Algorithm. Another is the Berlekamp algorithm for factoring polynomials over finite fields, whose later extensions and embellishments became widely used in symbolic manipulation systems. Other novel algorithms improved the basic methods for doing various arithmetic operations in finite fields of characteristic two. Other major research contributions in this book included a new class of Lee metric codes, and precise asymptotic results on the number of information symbols in long binary BCH codes.Selected chapters of the book became a standard graduate textbook.Both practicing engineers and scholars will find this book to be of great value.

Genes were unknowingly discovered in the 19th century by Gregor Mendel, a Czechoslovakian monk. It was later established that genes are made of DNA, a biological compound found in tiny thread-like structures called chromosomes that are located in the nuclei of all cells in our bodies. DNA consists of chains of entities called bases of which there are four in nature. DNA consists of long chains of bases (sometimes referred to as DNA sequences) that are joined in any order, but the precise order and length of which constitute different genes.Many (but not all) genes carry a code called the genetic code, a code that instructs the synthesis (manufacture) of the many hundreds of proteins that we require to survive and execute the many functions of life. The genetic code was deciphered in relatively recent years and is considered one of the most significant discoveries in the history of biology.Genes that encode instructions for the synthesis of proteins and those that regulate the manufacture of proteins comprise a mere two percent of our DNA. Despite our extensive knowledge of biology and the sub-discipline of molecular biology (the study of biology at the molecular level), the function (if any) of the rest of the DNA in our cells is unknown.Research about genes and DNA has in recent years spawned an endeavor referred to as the Human Genome Project, an international collaboration that has successfully determined, stored, and rendered publicly available the sequences of almost all the genetic content of the chromosomes of the human organism, otherwise known as the human genome.DNA sequences that are unique to every person on earth have been discovered (DNA fingherprints) and are now used for identifying criminals.
