A dialogue of materials and process, space and language, architecture and art This new volume, designed in collaboration with American artist Adam Pendleton (born 1984) and Ghanaian British artist and architect David Adjaye (born 1966), explores the blurred boundary between art and architecture. Featuring new silkscreen canvases by Pendleton and marble sculptures by Adjaye, this publication brings the artists and their works into conversation. The two collaborators discuss their respective practices and their process of working together on the creation of the exhibition at Pace, as well as notions of history, language, abstraction and space—whether architectonic or on canvas—and how these themes involve and reveal themselves in their work. Images of finished artworks are interspersed with photographs of their production, giving a behind-the-scenes look at process, from the quarrying, cutting and polishing of marble for Adjaye’s works to the meeting of ink and canvas in Pendleton’s studio.

Between 1999 and 2011 David Goldblatt created personal photography in color for the first time. While Goldblatt had employed color extensively in his professional work since 1964, it was only with the new political dispensation and the advances of digital reproduction at the end of the millennium that he felt it pertinent comprehensively to make personal photographs in color. Initially Goldblatt photographed in his immediate environment Johannesburg, before deciding to examine South Africa by taking photographs within a radius of 500 meters of each of the 122 points of intersection of a whole degree of latitude and a whole degree of longitude within its borders. Yet in time Goldblatt encountered uninspiring locations and abandoned the project, although he retained the idea of intersections. From time to time, over a period of nine years, he travelled the country in search of intersections—of ideas, values, histories, conflicts, congruencies, fears, joys and aspirations— and the land in which, and often because of which, these formed. This book brings together a selection of Goldblatt’s color photography in South Africa from 2002 to 2011. An earlier version, Intersections, was published by Prestel in 2005, and the catalogue Intersections Intersected, consisting of paired black-and-white and color photographs, was published by the Serralves Museum, Porto, in 2008.

Constructed Narratives brings together essays and several recently completed buildings by David Adjaye, in the United States and elsewhere. In the essays, Adjaye shows how his approach to the design of temporary pavilions and furniture, private houses, and installations at the 2015 Venice Biennale feeds into his designs for public buildings. Other essays discuss his engagement with geography, the urban environment, his approach to materiality, and architectural types. The presented projects include two public libraries and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, all in Washington D.C., a residential mixed-use building in New York, and a hybrid art-retail building in Beirut. Two of Adjaye's current projects are also included.

How does a photographer of David Bailey’s standing portray India without seeming con descending? Bailey has been to India fifteen times, and in these photographs he avoids depicting the cultural and economic differences between East and West that can make photos of the country seem overly didactic. Instead, Bailey depicts the colours, textures and people that characterise Delhi – a magenta sari, an infant walking down a rust-coloured road, a bright blue plastic tarpaulin – and so creates a portrait of the city that is sensitive without being self-indulgent.

In 1965 Elizabeth David opened a shop in Pimlico, London, where she sold Le Creuset pans and other hard-to-get-hold-of kitchen utensils. The store, with its marvellous window displays, was as influential as her books would eventually be, pioneering a new generation of shops devoted exclusively to kitchenware. Rosi Hanson, who worked in David's shop for two years says, 'She was good fun, and the shop was magical. She rather loved being a shopkeeper, perhaps because it gave her a rest from writing. If someone wanted some very specific piece of equipment, I often heard her say: ;If you could come back, I think I may have one at home. On evenings when we stayed late to do the windows, she would make a picnic for us all to eat: terrine, things in jelly.' While she was still involved with the shop which bore her name, Elizabeth David Ltd, she produced a series of four little booklets: The Baking of an English Loaf, Dried Herbs, Aromatics and Condiments, English Potted Meats and Fish Pastes and Syllabubs and Fruit Fools which were sold exclusively in the shop. They were simple black and white productions which have now become rare, highly sought-after and very expensive collector's items. So Grub Street is delighted to have acquired the rights to these booklets from the David Estate and we are redesigning them as four hardback books in a slip case with specially commissioned beautiful artwork making them the perfect gift item. So for the first time in over 50 years these charming works will be available once again. After his breakthrough with Ziggy Stardust and before his U.S. pop hits "Fame" and "Golden Years" David Bowie produced a dark and difficult concept album set in a post-apocalyptic "Hunger City" populated by post-human "mutants." For many young architects, houses or domestic buildings are among the first projects they design. For David Adjaye, such early commissions were connected to a rising generation of creatives, with whom he shared a range of sensibilities. His artistry, clever use of space and inexpensive, unexpected materials resulted in many innovative and widely published houses, mainly built in London. After twenty years of practice and a raft of high-profile projects around the world – not least the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, which opened in the autumn of 2016 – houses represent a smaller portion of Adjaye’s work, but are more potent as a result. Selecting projects that are challenging for their sites, complexity or architectural possibility, Adjaye has both expanded and sharpened his domestic design, taking it in new directions.
