Medieval Institute Publications Anthony Munday: The Honourable, Pleasant and Rare Conceited Historie of Palmendos: A Critical Edition with an Introduction, Critical Apparatus, Notes and Glossary
This is the first critical edition of The Honourable, Pleasant and Rare Conceited Historie of Palmendos (London, 1589), a chivalric romance translated into English by Anthony Munday. The original text, Primaleón de Grecia I (Salamanca, 1512), soon became a bestseller on the Spanish market and was translated into many continental European languages. Munday’s translation derives from the French version by François de Vernassal (1550). It comprises the first thirty-two chapters of the French text and focuses on the adventures of Palmendos on his journey to Constantinople. Anthony Munday died in 1633 at the age of seventy-three. He left behind a long career as a poet, playwright, author of civic pageantry, chronicle writer, pamphleteer and translator that made him one of the most versatile and prolific authors of his age. A controversial figure in his own time, he worked as a spy for Elizabeth’s government and wrote and translated works of religious controversy as well as pamphlets on contemporary European politics. This is an original-spelling edition that produces a text as close as possible to Munday’s original manuscript.

Plural Publishing Inc Manual of Allergy and Clinical Immunology for Otolaryngologists
Manual of Allergy and Clinical Immunology for Otolaryngologists presents the most up-to-date knowledge related to allergy and immunology directed towards the unique needs of otolaryngologists. Many of the clinical conditions treated by otolaryngologists have an allergic or immunologic pathogenesis, including sinusitis, rhinitis and otitis, and otolaryngologists are often required to use allergic methodology in treating these problems. This book is a resource to which physicians can refer to help them manage allergic aspects of common ENT problems and their diagnosis and management. The book begins with an introduction to the fundamental immunologic processes necessary to understand allergic mechanism and diseases and goes on to include food and drug allergies, anaphalaxsis, immune deficiencies, occupational allergic diseases, and tumor immunology, among other topics. Otolaryngologists across all specialties as well as residents will benefit from the current information that focuses on the most important aspects of each topic in a concise, easy to reference format. **From the Foreword: "The fields of allergy, immunology, and otolaryngology are inextricably linked.Immunologic dysregulation is recognized to be the underpinning of a wide variety of diseases of the head and neck, and on a daily basis the practicing otolaryngologist must draw upon principles of allergy and immunology in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. For example, it is a rare patient presenting with a sinonasal complaint in whom consideration of allergic etiologies is not relevant. The otolaryngologist must also have a strong understanding of autoimmune illnesses to recognize the unique array of potential head and neck manifestations associated with autoimmune disease. Equally important, a deeper understanding of immunopathology may be the key to unlocking the mechanisms of major diseases ranging from chronic rhinosinusitis to head and neck cancer. Thus it is imperative for the otolaryngologist to master principles of allergy and immunology in order to provide optimal patient care. The body of knowledge encompassed by allergy and immunology is rapidly evolving and expanding, posing a great challenge for otolaryngologists seeking to keep up with diagnostic and treatment advances in the field. This splendid textbook offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary encapsulation of contemporary allergy and immunology for the otolaryngologist. Drs. Rosenstreich, Fried, de Vos and Jackman have assembled an illustrious group of authors who have managed to distill the essentials of allergy and immunology for the otolaryngologist without sacrificing scientific content or detail. The reader will appreciate clear elucidation of basic science concepts and the practical translation of basic science principles to the clinical management of otolaryngologic illnesses. Diagnostic and treatment guidelines are presented with a comprehensive and pragmatic approach. This book is essential reading for all otolaryngologists, from trainees looking to grasp the breadth of overlap between otolaryngology and allergy/immunology, to seasoned otolaryngologists seeking to update their fund of knowledge with the latest developments in immunophysiology and clinical treatment. The knowledge gained from this expertly edited volume will benefit our patients tremendously." --Peter H.Hwang, MD, Professor and Chief, Division of Rhinology and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery, Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, Stanford University School of Medicine

Great Northern Books Ltd Priestley At Kissing Tree House: A Memoir
A lost and now found memoir of J.B. Priestleywritten by someone who knew him better than most others: his own personal secretary. Written in the 1980s, though never published, the manuscript has only recently resurfaced. It provides a unique, warm and intimate portrait of the private, hidden life, of one of the twentieth century's most widely read authors and great public figures. The book reveals Priestley's daily routines, his writing habits, hobbies, weaknesses, eccentricities and his correspondence with a variety of organisations and people, including family, and other renowned authors and figures of the twentieth century; a warts and all portrait, truthful, revealing, moving. A book which in the end, displays great love for its subject. It is a memoir that also reveals the somewhat old-fashioned role of a live-in personal secretary / assistant to an author and the close relationship that develops with such a job. KISSING TREE HOUSE Kissing Tree House is the name of the house where Priestley and his wife, the archaeologist Jacquetta Hawkes, lived from December 1959 until his death in 1984. The house is in the small village of Alveston about four miles from Stratford. Of historical interest, the house has been a listed property since 1972. Listing NGR: SP2344156412 Priestley had many guests and held many dinner parties at Kissing Tree; he was visited there by many famous figures. John Wiley and Sons Ltd Cardenio between Cervantes and Shakespeare: The Story of a Lost Play
How should we read a text that does not exist, or present a play the manuscript of which is lost and the identity of whose author cannot be established for certain? Such is the enigma posed by Cardenio – a play performed in England for the first time in 1612 or 1613 and attributed forty years later to Shakespeare (and Fletcher). Its plot is that of a ‘novella’ inserted into Don Quixote, a work that circulated throughout the major countries of Europe, where it was translated and adapted for the theatre. In England, Cervantes’ novel was known and cited even before it was translated in 1612 and had inspired Cardenio. But there is more at stake in this enigma. This was a time when, thanks mainly to the invention of the printing press, there was a proliferation of discourses. There was often a reaction when it was feared that this proliferation would become excessive, and many writings were weeded out. Not all were destined to survive, in particular plays for the theatre, which, in many cases, were never published. This genre, situated at the bottom of the literary hierarchy, was well suited to the existence of ephemeral works. However, if an author became famous, the desire for an archive of his works prompted the invention of textual relics, the restoration of remainders ruined by the passing of time or, in order to fill in the gaps, in some cases, even the fabrication of forgeries. Such was the fate of Cardenio in the eighteenth century. Retracing the history of this play therefore leads one to wonder about the status, in the past, of works today judged to be canonical. In this book the reader will rediscover the malleability of texts, transformed as they were by translations and adaptations, their migrations from one genre to another, and their changing meanings constructed by their various publics. Thanks to Roger Chartier’s forensic skills, fresh light is cast upon the mystery of a play lacking a text but not an author.

She read it in one sitting, then begged her boss to consider publishing it. A year later, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl became a bestseller. It was the start of a culture-defining career in publishing. During her more than fifty years as an editor at Alfred A. Hebrew Union College Press,U.S. Tradition, Interpretation, and Change: Developments in the Liturgy of Medieval and Early Modern Ashkenaz
Minhag (custom) played a far greater and far more important role in medieval Ashkenazic society than in any other Jewish community. In upholding the authority of a custom, halakhic authorities frequently asserted that "custom prevails over halakhah." Furthermore, Ashkenazic authorities asserted that Ashkenazic custom is more authentic than the customs of other Jewish communities, including those of Sepharad (Spain). Given the importance attributed to minhag and the influence of the siddur commentaries of the circle of Hassidei Ashkenaz, which emphasize the precise formulation of liturgical texts, one might assume that Ashkenazic Jewry was committed to preserving ancestral custom and opposed to liturgical change. However, the reality is that the liturgy of Ashkenaz was never static. From a very early time, new liturgies and liturgical practices were incorporated into the service, the inclusion of various prayers was challenged, and variant readings of prayers became standard. Tradition, Interpretation, and Change focuses on developments in the Ashkenazic rite, the liturgical rite of most of central and eastern European Jewry, from the eleventh century through the seventeenth. Kenneth Berger argues that how a prayer or practice was understood, or the rationale for its recitation or performance, often had a profound effect on whether and when it was to be recited, as well as on the specific wording of the prayer. In some cases, the formulation of new interpretations served a conservative function, as when rabbinic authorities sought to find new, alternative explanations which would justify the continued performance of practices whose original rationale no longer applied. In other cases, new understandings of a liturgical practice led to changes in that practice, and even to the development of new liturgies expressive of those interpretations. In Tradition, Interpretation, and Change, Berger draws upon a wide body of primary sources, including classical rabbinic and geonic works, liturgical documents found in the Cairo genizah, medieval codes, responsa, and siddur commentaries, minhag books, medieval siddur manuscripts, and early printed siddurim, as well as a wealth of secondary sources, to provide the reader with an in-depth account of the history and history of interpretation of many familiar and not-so-familiar prayers and liturgical practices. While emphasizing the role that the interpretation ascribed to various prayers and practices had in shaping the liturgy of medieval and early modern Ashkenaz, Berger illustrates the degree to which Sephardic and kabbalistic influences, concern for the fate of the dead, the fear of demons, and the desire for healing and divine protection from a variety of dangers shaped both liturgical practice and the way in which those practices were understood.

McFarland & Co Inc The Dorothy West Martha's Vineyard: Stories, Essays and Reminiscences by Dorothy West Writing in the Vineyard Gazette
This book is a compilation of selected stories, essays, and reminiscences that Dorothy West wrote for the Vineyard Gazette from the 1960s to the early 1990s. In these entries, West retraces life on the island as she experienced it from 1908, when she was an infant, to 1993 when she wrote her final column. Born in 1907 in Boston, Dorothy West went on to develop into a prize-winning author by the time she was in her teens. The 1926 award she received in New York, and the lure of the city itself, inspired West to leave Boston and join what was then a fledgling literary movement that would evolve into the Harlem Renaissance. She circulated among what in essence was the black literary "royalty" of her times, of which she was a signal member.By the mid-1940s West had returned to Massachusetts, to Martha's Vineyard. She began to write a column for the local paper about the comings and goings of island residents and visitors. It was her column in the Gazette that drew the attention of former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis who, on one of her island visits, met the author and expressed her admiration. Onassis, at the time, just happened to be an editor at Doubleday. When Onassis learned of a decades-old manuscript that had been laid aside, she urged West to pick up the work again. West later dedicated this book "To the memory of my editor, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Though there was never such a mismatched pair in appearance, we were perfect partners."The authors selected from the Gazette columns that West wrote over the three decades, those on people, events, and nature seemed to have the greatest historic, artistic, or philosophical import.

Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, Wydawnictwo Unknown Lutsk Karaim Letters in Hebrew Script 1 – A Critical Edition
The work presents -- as far as is now possible -- the language spoken by Lutsk Karaims in the second half of the 19th and in the first two decades of the 20th centuries. This is attempted by means of editing eleven private letters and five open letters written in Lutsk Karaim -- with Hebrew interpolations. The letters were written by different authors in Hebrew script. The present publication appears to be the first critical edition of this type of text written in this particular dialect. Previous editions of south-western Karaim manuscripts either concerned very short texts from Halych or were prepared with no intention of being professional. The linguistic description of the texts aims to present a grammar of the manuscripts' language. It is complemented with a separate chapter dealing with the Slavonic structural influences exerted on the authors' idiolects, and with the lexicon of the texts. A separate part deals with the orthography and the features of the writing itself. The transcription and translation of each manuscript are preceded with a concise palaeographic description and a summary of the content. The work closes with a glossary, several indexes, maps, and the facsimile of the manuscripts.

This provides authors with the opportunity to fully express their key ideas, provide much more complete support, and include relevant multi-page appendices. In effect, the Advances series provides authors the opportunity to publish an "article of record" of their major theoretical or empirical ideas, and see it disseminated to a wide audience.

University of Pennsylvania Press Paper Monsters: Persona and Literary Culture in Elizabethan England
In Paper Monsters, Samuel Fallon charts the striking rise, at the turn to the seventeenth century, of a new species of textual being: the serial, semifictional persona. When Thomas Nashe introduced his charismatic alter ego Pierce Penilesse in a 1592 text, he described the figure as a "paper monster," not fashioned but "begotten" into something curiously like life. The next decade bore this description out, as Pierce took on a life of his own, inspiring other writers to insert him into their own works. And Pierce was hardly alone: such figures as the polemicist Martin Marprelate, the lovers Philisides and Astrophil, the shepherd-laureate Colin Clout, the prodigal wit Euphues, and, in an odd twist, the historical author Robert Greene all outgrew their fictional origins, moving from text to text and author to author, purporting to speak their own words, even surviving their creators' deaths, and installing themselves in the process as agents at large in the real world of writing, publication, and reception. In seeking to understand these "paper monsters" as a historically specific and rather short-lived phenomenon, Fallon looks to the rapid expansion of the London book trade in the years of their ascendancy. Personae were products of print, the medium that rendered them portable, free-floating figures. But they were also the central fictions of a burgeoning literary field: they embodied that field's negotiations between manuscript and print, and they forged a new form of public, textual selfhood. Sustained by the appropriative rewritings they inspired, personae came to seem like autonomous citizens of the literary public. Fallon argues that their status as collective fictions, passed among writers, publishers, and readers, positioned personae as the animating figures of what we have come to call "print culture."

Birkhauser Construction: Manual
People involved in architecture need to be familiar with construction methods in order to be in control of their designs. New technical requirements impact on our buildings and call for up-to-date specialist knowledge, which leads to new forms of architecture. This handbook uses clearly comprehensible 3D isometric diagrams to introduce the world of contemporary construction, from concept through to the detail; photographs are used to illustrate the content. The three main chapters deal with the structure, the building envelope, and the fit-out, starting with a clear introduction to the construction principles of modern building methods. Using drawings of selected built examples at scales of 1:10 and 1:20, a deeper examination of details is possible.

Arco Libros - La Muralla, S.L.

D Giles Ltd East Meets West
This entirely new volume illuminates the complex intersection of western and eastern culture and civilization in the Eastern Mediterranean during the period of the Crusades from the eleventh to late thirteenth century; in particular it presents and studies 20 Byzantine and Mamluk Egyptian artworks and illuminated manuscripts drawn both from the collections of the Museum and external loans. The diverse artworks-ceramic bowls, Sgraffito ware, gold coins, glass jewellery and leaves from the Qur'an, and other illuminated manuscripts-are presented in broad chronological and thematic sections, each with an introductory text by a Professor Martin Bommas of the Museum, and other guest authors. These sections look at these objects within the broad context of the Crusades and the history of the Byzantine Empire and Mamluk Egypt, as well as considering reception to, and presentation of, Mamluk heritage in modern-day Cairo, and the reception of object of non-European heritage in Australia. In addition to the main sections and presentation of the objects, many also illustrated using wonderful colour details for the section openers, the volume includes a timeline, selected bibliography and brief biographies of the contributing authors.

The University of Chicago Press A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, Ninth Edition: Chicago Style for Students and Researchers
When Kate L. Turabian first put her famous guidelines to paper, she could hardly have imagined the world in which today's students would be conducting research. Yet while the ways in which we research and compose papers may have changed, the fundamentals remain the same: writers need to have a strong research question, construct an evidence-based argument, cite their sources, and structure their work in a logical way. A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations--also known as "Turabian"--remains one of the most popular books for writers because of its timeless focus on achieving these goals. This new edition filters decades of expertise into modern standards. While previous editions incorporated digital forms of research and writing, this edition goes even further to build information literacy, recognizing that most students will be doing their work largely or entirely online and on screens. Chapters include updated advice on finding, evaluating, and citing a wide range of digital sources and also recognize the evolving use of software for citation management, graphics, and paper format and submission. The ninth edition is fully aligned with the recently released Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition, as well as with the latest edition of The Craft of Research. Teachers and users of the previous editions will recognize the familiar three-part structure. Part 1 covers every step of the research and writing process, including drafting and revising. Part 2 offers a comprehensive guide to Chicago's two methods of source citation: notes-bibliography and author-date. Part 3 gets into matters of editorial style and the correct way to present quotations and visual material. A Manual for Writers also covers an issue familiar to writers of all levels: how to conquer the fear of tackling a major writing project. Through eight decades and millions of copies, A Manual for Writers has helped generations shape their ideas into compelling research papers. This new edition will continue to be the gold standard for college and graduate students in virtually all academic disciplines.
