Vivid, clear-sighted images of American vernacular signage and architecture encountered along old US highways showcase the early black-and-white work of the acclaimed photographer Jim Dow The American photographer Jim Dow (b. 1942) is renowned for photographs that depict the built environment—he first gained attention for his panoramic triptychs of baseball stadiums—and for his skill at conveying the “human ingenuity and spirit” that suffuse the spaces. This book is the first to focus on Dow’s early black-and-white pictures, featuring more than 60 photographs made between 1967 and 1977, a majority of which have never before been published. Indebted to the work of Walker Evans, a key mentor of Dow’s, these photographs depict time-worn signage taken from billboards, diners, gas stations, drive-ins, and other small businesses. Many are familiar with Jackie Robinson and the integration of Major League Baseball after all the years of separate black and white leagues, but fewer people know of the segregation and then integration of the National Football League. The timing and sequence of events were different, but football followed a pattern similar to that of baseball in regard to the beginning and end of racial segregation. This work traces professional football's movement from segregation to integration, beginning with a discussion of the various reasons why the game was segregated to begin with. The schemes that NFL owners came up with to ban African Americans from the league in the 1930s and 1940s, and how these barriers broke down after World War II, are described and the author considers how professional football overcame the legacies of Jim Crow and how Jim Crow laws may still haunt the game.

From functional installations to discrete objects, Jim Isermann has chronicled the conflation of postwar industrial design and fine art through popular culture A comprehensive monograph spanning the 40-year career of Palm Springs–based artist Jim Isermann (born 1955), this title shows the artist’s first 20 years of extensive, chronological research of postwar art and design filtered through popular culture and consumerism, followed by 20 years of site-specific public projects and a studio practice of labor-intensive painting, sculpture and the occasional product design project. In 1980, there were no guidebooks to California design or what we now call Midcentury Modern. Isermann constructed his own timeline, object by object, from thrift stores, flea markets and swap meets, making bodies of work that included latch hook rugs paired with painting, stained glass window panels and handsewn fabric wall hangings. By 1999, Isermann had his first computer, and so began the second 20 years of his career, with complex digitally designed patterns that found their form in commercially manufactured modules.
