The development and use of models of various objects is becoming a more common practice in recent days. This is due to the ease with which models can be developed and examined through the use of computers and appropriate software. Of those two, the former - high-speed computers - are easily accessible nowadays, and the latter - existing programs - are being updated almost continuously, and at the same time new powerful software is being developed. Usually a model represents correlations between some processes and their interactions, with better or worse quality of representation. It details and characterizes a part of the real world taking into account a structure of phenomena, as well as quantitative and qualitative relations. There are a great variety of models. Modelling is carried out in many diverse fields. All types of natural phenomena in the area of biology, ecology and medicine are possible subjects for modelling. Models stand for and represent technical objects in physics, chemistry, engineering, social events and behaviours in sociology, financial matters, investments and stock markets in economy, strategy and tactics, defence, security and safety in military fields. There is one common point for all models. We expect them to fulfil the validity of prediction. It means that through the analysis of models it is possible to predict phenomena, which may occur in a fragment of the real world represented by a given model. We also expect to be able to predict future reactions to signals from the outside world.

At its core, information security deals with the secure and accurate transfer of information. While information security has long been important, it was, perhaps, brought more clearly into mainstream focus with the so-called “Y2K” issue. Te Y2K scare was the fear that c- puter networks and the systems that are controlled or operated by sofware would fail with the turn of the millennium, since their clocks could lose synchronization by not recognizing a number (instruction) with three zeros. A positive outcome of this scare was the creation of several Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) around the world that now work - operatively to exchange expertise and information, and to coordinate in case major problems should arise in the modern IT environment. Te terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 raised security concerns to a new level. Te - ternational community responded on at least two fronts; one front being the transfer of reliable information via secure networks and the other being the collection of information about - tential terrorists. As a sign of this new emphasis on security, since 2001, all major academic publishers have started technical journals focused on security, and every major communi- tions conference (for example, Globecom and ICC) has organized workshops and sessions on security issues. In addition, the IEEE has created a technical committee on Communication and Information Security. Te ?rst editor was intimately involved with security for the Athens Olympic Games of 2004.

The focus is on non-electrolyte systems, and only data for pure liquids and binary liquid mixtures at normal pr- sure (or in some single cases at the saturation vapor pressure) were taken into account for this volume. No data at higher pressures were collected, no data for the gaseous state, and no data for dielectric relaxation processes at higher frequencies have been included. For mixtures, this data collection is restricted to binary liquid mixtures, i. e. no ternary systems and also no solutions of any solids, salts, electrolytes, polymers are included here. At least, also molten metals and metallic alloys, molten salts, molten glasses and other hi- temperature melts were not taken into account. Wave propagation is an important topic in engineering sciences, especially, in the field of solid mechanics. A description of wave propagation phenomena is given by Graff [98]: The effect of a sharply applied, localized disturbance in a medium soon transmits or 'spreads' to other parts of the medium. These effects are familiar to everyone, e.g., transmission of sound in air, the spreading of ripples on a pond of water, or the transmission of radio waves. From all wave types in nature, here, attention is focused only on waves in solids. Thus, solely mechanical disturbances in contrast to electro-magnetic or acoustic disturbances are considered. of waves - the compression wave similar to the In solids, there are two types pressure wave in fluids and, additionally, the shear wave. Due to continual reflec­ tions at boundaries and propagation of waves in bounded solids after some time a steady state is reached. Depending on the influence of the inertia terms, this state is governed by a static or dynamic equilibrium in frequency domain. However, if the rate of onset of the load is high compared to the time needed to reach this steady state, wave propagation phenomena have to be considered.

This text contains the proceedings of a workshop on software develoDment tools, held at Pingree Park, Colorado in May, 1979. The workshop, for which we were co-chair­ men, was primarily, but not exclusively, concerned with a variety of tools supporting pre-implementation phases of software development. The workshop brought together researchers and practitioners from industrial, governmental, and academic sectors to compare and assess current work and to set some directions for future work in this emerging technical area. The fifty participants represented research and development efforts in software tools within the United States, Canada, France, Great Britain, and Japan. (A list of participants appears at the end of the text. ) Sponsorship was provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Bureau of Standards, the National Science Foundation, and Digital Equipment Corporation. The conference consisted of seven formal sessions and numerous organized and impromptu discussions.
