The unique wire model collection of the Swiss collector Edmond Remondino documents an early phase of a craft that today enjoys international renown with collectors and researchers. In the 1970s and 1980s the models evolved from real prototypes such as race cars from the Rally du Burundi; today, as then, the extraordinary aesthetic, alternating between minimalism and comic-type exaggeration, captures the imagination. The Letter to the Colossians, though a relatively short work, was chosen because it contains some very interesting material worthy of study from an epigraphical angle and also offers opportunities to open up towards a broader perspective on Pauline literature. The Documentary Hypothesis, which in the 20th century was the standard theory to explain the development of the Pentateuch, has been challenged from different angles. One important text corpus where new proposals have been brought into the debate is the Book of Numbers. The articles in this volume address the formation of the Book of Numbers from the earliest to the latest strata. They focus on topics like the source-critical placement of the texts in Deuteronomy that retell events from Numbers, the status of the late priestly halakhic legal adaptations and their relation to the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy, the search for the redactor(s) who combined the Priestly and the non-priestly material, the relation to the Book of Joshua, and the status of the very late additions that formed the Pentateuch as Torah for the community. Thus, the volume contributes to the discussion on the normative background and identity formation in the late Persian period. Special attention is also given to the composition of the final text of the Book of Numbers and its understanding of law and narrative.The authors, among them outstanding researchers in the field, partially contributed to a symposium on the topic "Torah in the Book of Numbers" at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, held on April 12-13, 2011.

For more than 20 years, Swiss architect Martino Pedrozzi has been working on the partial reconstruction of derelict dwellings on alpine pastures in the mountains of southern Switzerland. His interventions in Valle di Blenio and Val Malvaglia, at altitudes around 6,500 ft in the canton of Ticino, are part of a scheme to protect and preserve the cultivated landscape shaped by generations of local farmers grazing their cattle. Pedrozzi collected and put in place again stones that had been used as building materials for the ancient dry-stone walled structures, which have been abandoned in recent decades. This recomposition is meant to reconstruct a public space and to retain landmarks in the barren alpine landscape, and to form a monument for the civilisation that has been sustained by it for centuries. This book documents Pedrozzi's work and highlights the problem of rural exodus: a constant phenomenon in the history of human life, caused by conflict, economic change, natural disasters, and climate change. Over the course of three days in 1970, June 5, 6, and 7, simply sitting on a white bench in a Hamburg park, Thomas Bernhard delivered a powerful monologue for Three Days (Drei Tage), filmmaker Ferry Radax’s commanding film portrait of the great Austrian writer. Radax interwove the monologue with a variety of metaphorically resonant visual techniques—blacking out the screen to total darkness, suggestive of the closing of the observing eye; cuts to scenes of cameramen, lighting and recording equipment; extreme camera distance and extreme closeup. Bernhard had not yet written his autobiographical work Gathering Evidence, published originally in five separate volumes between 1975 and 1982, and his childhood remembrances were a revelation. From Deficit to Deluge takes stock of shifts in scholarly investigation of the origins of French Revolution. During the last decade, scholars have moved beyond "revisionist" historians of the 1970s, who highlighted the monarchy's degeneration into despotism, to explore related conflicts in the realms of finance, social relations, religion, diplomacy, the Enlightenment, and colonial policy. In this book, seven established authorities explore some of these critical intersections, and together they make clear the role that unresolved tensions in these realms played in the essentially political narrative told by post-Marxian revisionist historiography. While each chapter of From Deficit to Deluge focuses upon one site of contention—fiscal, social, religious, diplomatic, ideological, and colonial—they all help to explain how long-standing structural problems of the Old Regime caused a fairly "normal" fiscal crisis to metastasize into a revolution. This volume features presentations delivered at annual conferences of the Society of Biblical Literature. In 2014 and 2015, they were offered for the Sacrifice, Cult, and Atonement section, which existed between 2007 and 2015; its objective was the study of the practices, interpretations, and reception history of sacrifice and cult in early Judaism, Christianity, and their larger cultural contexts (ancient Near East and Greco-Roman antiquity). This program unit offered panels under the title Writing a Commentary on Leviticus that were intended to provide scholars working on such commentary volumes with a forum of scholarly discussion and exchange. The panel series was proposed by Thomas Hieke, who was then work-ing on a Leviticus commentary for the academic series Herders Theologischer Kommentar zum Alten Testament (HThKAT, published by Herder in 2014). It was welcome and adopted by Christian A. Eberhart, founder and former chair of the Sacrifice, Cult, and Atonement section. The third and final panel was housed in the Ritual in the Biblical World section at the annual conference of the Society of Biblical Literature in 2016.The present volume makes the presentations by these scholars, and with them an important segment of the work of the Sacrifice, Cult, and Atonement section, available to a wider academic audience. It is thus a sequel to the volumes Ritual and Metaphor: Sacrifice in the Bible (SBLRBS 68; Atlanta: Society of Biblical Liter-ature, 2011), edited by Christian A. Eberhart, and Sacrifice, Cult, and Atonement in Early Judaism and Christianity: Constituents and Critique (SBLRBS 85; Atlanta: SBL Press, 2017), edited by Henrietta L. Wiley and Christian A. Eberhart.We wish to thank Nicole Duran, Steve Finlan, Bill Gilders, Jason Tatlock, and Henrietta L. Wiley, the members of the steering committee of the Sacrifice, Cult, and Atonement section, for their ongoing collaboration. They have pur-sued the themes of this program section with scholarly rigor and professional engagement for almost a decade. We are also grateful to Ada Taggar-Cohen and Jason Lamoreaux, the chairs of the Ritual in the Biblical World section, for hosting the final panel of our project, thus allowing us to complete the three-year cycle.
