The sacred landscape of imperial China was dotted with Buddhist monasteries, Daoist temples, shrines to local deities, and the altars of the mandarinate. Prominent among the official shrines were the temples in every capital throughout the empire devoted to the veneration of Confucius. Twice a year members of the educated elite and officials in each area gathered to offer sacrifices to Confucius, his disciples, and the major scholars of the Confucian tradition.The worship of Confucius is one of the least understood aspects of Confucianism, even though the temple and the cult were highly visible signs of Confucianism's existence in imperial China. To many modern observers of traditional China, the temple cult is difficult to reconcile with the image of Confucianism as an ethical, humanistic, rational philosophy. The nine essays in this book are an attempt to recover the meaning and significance of the religious side of Confucianism. Wade has compiled this first comprehensive ethnohistory of the Native groups that inhabited the Texas Edwards Plateau and surrounding areas during most of the Spanish colonial era.Much of the book deals with events that took place late in the seventeenth century, when Native groups and Europeans began to have their first sustained contact in the region. Wade identifies twenty-one Native groups, including the Jumano, who inhabited the Edwards Plateau at that time. She offers evidence that the groups had sophisticated social and cultural mechanisms, including extensive information networks, ladino cultural brokers, broad-based coalitions, and individuals with dual-ethnic status. One of the myths about families in inner-city neighbourhoods is that they are characterized by poor parenting. The sociologist Frank Furstenberg and his colleagues explode this and other misconceptions about success, parenting, and socioeconomic advantage in this text. Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are extensively used in consumer products, despite their high persistence and other hazards. The risks posed by this chemical class to human health and the environment, which are increasingly becoming understood, have triggered regulation and policy changes. However, safer alternatives to these technically effective materials and methods to discover and use those alternatives are still under development. Remediation of PFAS contaminated sites will not solve the growing worldwide pollution, but substitution with safer substances at the formulation and manufacturing phases will at least abate the flow of PFASs into our bodies and environment. Als eines der ersten dieser Projekte hat das französiche Unternehmen La Biblie d'Alexandrie diesem neu erwachten Interesse entscheidende Impulse gegeben. Seit den 1980er Jahren sind in der Reihe La Bible d'Alexandrie 16 Bände mit Ãbersetzungen der Erläuterungen erschienen. Das Projekt Septuaginta Deutsch (LXX.D) existiert seit 1999. Im Jahr 2009 ist die vollständige deutsche Ãbersetzung der Septuaginta erschienen. Ein Band mit Erläuterungen ist in Arbeit. In beiden Projekten sind internationale Arbeitsgemeinschaften am Werk.Die Septuaginta kann nicht ohne Gundlagenarbeit an den Texten Ã"bersetzt werden; daher sind Ãbersetzungsprojekte immer auch zugleich Forschungsprojekte. Die Beiträge in diesem Band gehen zurÃ"ck auf eine Tagung, die im Jahr 2004 gemeinsam von Herausgebern und Ãbersetzern die Bible d'Alexandrie sowie der Septuatinta Deutsch an der Universität StraÃburg abgehalten wurde.
