John Dixon (1835-1891) was one of the generation of British contractors who built railways, bridges and other civil engineering works around the world. Today most are generally forgotten, a fate entirely undeserved by the man who erected Cleopatra’s Needle on the Thames Embankment and who built the first railway in China. John Dixon was competent and self-confident, with the boundless enthusiasm and energy typical of Victorian contractors. Had his tender for the construction of the Forth Railway Bridge been accepted, and it was the lowest tender received, history would have treated him differently. This book describes the life and works of John, his bridges, railways, jetties, seaside piers and other projects. His wider business interests, his professional colleagues and his family life are also covered. It includes an explanation of why his tender for the Forth Bridge was unsuccessful, but only mentions Cleopatra’s Needle briefly as this is worthy of another book. Indeed, John’s brothers, Sir Raylton Dixon (1838-1901) and Waynman Dixon (1845-1930) were also distinguished engineers and it is hoped to publish similar books on their careers. John, Raylton and Waynman Dixon were members of the same Dixon family, from Raby, Cockfield and Newcastle upon Tyne, as was Jeremiah Dixon of Mason-Dixon Line fame.

This is a charming book, describing, in the words of Chris Wright, 'one of the greatest partnerships in church history.' It is a story which John Stott himself hoped would one day be told. It is widely agreed that Stott could not have been half so effective without Frances Whitehead at his side. He invited her to become his Secretary when she was still a young Christian, at that time working for the BBC. Having done secret war work as a mathematician, she brought a good mind as well as determination. Stott relied on her, and she would shoulder responsibility to work on the infrastructure to establish his ideas. She also typed his 50 books from longhand. They are both described (by one of the succession of young graduate Study Assistants) as 'fast, exacting and determined', with Frances matching Stott's gold standard again and again. 'She was as remarkable in her way as John Stott was in his.' They were good friends, and she was named in his Will as 'My friend and Executor'. Neither married and both were completely dedicated to John's ministry. You can't understand his ministry without knowing of Frances Whitehead. This is a very colourful biography looking at Frances Whitehead's ancestry as well as her own interesting life. It includes walk-on parts from George III, Gainsborough, Prince Albert, Florence Nightingale, the Singer family (of Singer sewing Machine fame) and Jacqueline du Pre. It is no ordinary 'Christian biography'. Her family at one stage owned much of Chelsea, including the land on which Harrods now stands. Frances's life story gives us glimpses into the way they worked together, and their shared values. Both were very modest about their contributions, and lived modestly. John Stott lived in a small two-roomed flat, from which he worked. His Study Assistant had a desk in Stott's small bedroom - the desk had been rescued from a skip. Frances worked in a small office looking out onto a brick wall. The book concludes with a summing-up of John Stott's and Frances Whitehead's joint legacy. This includes the founding and establishing of two global movements. Timeline, Family trees, Appendices, and over 30 photographs.

Isho‘dad of Merw, Bishop of the East Syrian Church in Hedatta, wrote his commentaries on the books of the Old and New Testament around 850 A.D. His work constitutes one of the most important and extensive exegetical collections within the East Syrian Church. From 1911 to 1916 Margaret D. Gibson published a text edition and an English translation of the New Testament Part. Developments in the area of manuscript tradition, the discovery of new sources and the many deficiencies in Gibson’s work, made a new text edition and translation necessary. The starting point has been taken in Isho‘dad’s commentary on the Gospel of St. John. This gave the opportunity to trace in Isho‘dad’s commentary the influences of the work of Theodore of Mopsuestia, whose commentary on the Gospel of St. John has survived in the Syriac language. Volume 671 (Textus) offers a Syriac text edition based on 15 manuscripts. In the Introduction these manuscripts and their mutual relationship are described. Volume 672 (Versio) contains a description of Isho’dad’s life, a study of the sources used by him, and a translation. The volumes include a survey of Gibson’s errata, an orthographical index and an index of biblical citations and Greek terms quoted.

John J. Weinzweig (b. 1913) has been considered the dean of Canadian music for over thirty years. This is the first book-length study of his development as a musician and his contributions to Canadian music as a composer, teacher, and administrator. Keillor discusses his training and development in the context of Toronto's musical life during the 1930s and 40s, in particular, thus providing a useful and valuable historical perspective. During these years, Weinzweig established the profession of composer in Canada. Subsequently, his compositions, which are extensively examined in Part II, provided models of current compositional practice for his many students, as well as valuable additions to contemporary music literature. He was the first Canadian to propound the use of the serial technique, and Keillor traces his particular adaptations of serialism from 1939 to 1970. In his later compositions, he has elaborated on issues such as the role of silence, and theatrical and structural aspects initially explored by the Dadaists and Satie. In his life as well as his music, Weinzweig has championed advanced and often unpopular ideas. The romantic side of him is his imaginative and visionary quest to better the lot of his fellow composers, particularly in Canada. The book provides a fully annotated listing of Weinzweig's compositions, plus information about recordings. An appendix lists the approximately hundred scores for radio dramas and films that Weinzweig prepared for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the National Film Board of Canada. The homiletic corpora of John Chrysostom and Severian of Gabala are major yet understudied sources documenting late antique Christianity. With their sermons on Genesis as focal point, the studies in this volume contribute in many ways to advancing the state of the art. S. Voicu offers a complete survey of research on Severian, including a check-list of his authentic works. S. Kim, J. Oosterhuis-den Otter and L. Sels-S.
