Stanford University Press Charlotte Perkins Gilman: A Biography
Charlotte Perkins Gilman offers the definitive account of this controversial writer and activist's long and eventful life. Charlotte Anna Perkins Stetson Gilman (1860–1935) launched her career as a lecturer, author, and reformer with the story for which she is best-known today, "The Yellow Wallpaper." She was hailed as the "brains" of the US women's movement, whose focus she sought to broaden from suffrage to economics. Her most influential sociological work criticized the competitive individualism of capitalists and Social Darwinists, and touted altruistic service as the prerequisite to both social progress and human evolution. By 1900, Gilman had become an international celebrity, but had already faced a scandal over her divorce and "abandonment" of her child. As the years passed, her audience shrunk and grew more hostile, and she increasingly positioned herself in opposition to the society that in an earlier, more idealistic period she had seen as the better part of the self. In her final years, she unflinchingly faced breast cancer, her second husband's sudden death, and finally, her own carefully planned suicide— she "preferred chloroform to cancer" and cared little for a single life when its usefulness was over. Charlotte Perkins Gilman presents new insights into the life of a remarkable woman whose public solutions often belied her private anxieties. It aims to recapture the drama and complexity of Gilman's life while presenting a comprehensive scholarly portrait.

Lehigh University Press The Wunderkammer of Lady Charlotte Guest
This book examines the life of Lady Charlotte Guest Schreiber, who provided the first complete translation of the Mabinogion and ran her late husband’s ironmongery. This book examines how collecting porcelain, playing cards, and fans allowed her to create a series of private signifying systems that countered the prevailing Victorian discourse assigned to women.

Hirmer Verlag Charlotte Berend-Corinth (Bilingual edition)
Quite apart from her position as the wife and model of Lovis Corinth (1858–1925), Charlotte Berend-Corinth (1880–1967) shone as an artist and was, like Käthe Kollwitz, one of the few women members of the Berlin Secession. This bibliophile monograph is dedicated to the highly gifted, successful and unfairly neglected artist and presents an impressive synopsis of her oeuvre. Berend-Corinth pursued a remarkable career with ultra-modern, radical subjects in the Berlin of the 1910s and 1920s until her Jewish descent compelled her to leave Germany and to emigrate to the United States. Her early work, in which she captured the permissive mood of the Berlin art and theatre scene during the 1910s and 1920s, represents one main area of focus, as do the later portraits of famous personalities of her time and some of her remarkable self-portraits, still lifes and landscape pictures.

Little, Brown Book Group Charlotte Bronte: A Passionate Life
In this groundbreaking and unconventional biography, Lyndall Gordon dismantles the insistent image of Charlotte Bronte as a modest Victorian lady, the slave to duty in the shadow of tombstones, revealing instead a strong and fiery woman who shaped her own life and transformed it into art. 'Sensitive, open-minded, vivid, full of psychological insight, [Gordon's] book is a brilliant reappraisal of Charlotte Bronte's life, work, and the flow between the two . . . It is also a deeply moving story' Jackie Wullschlager, Financial Times

Design Museum Charlotte Perriand: The Modern Life
Charlotte Perriand was one of great designers of the twentieth century. A pioneer of modernism, her work was often overshadowed by her more famous male collaborators, who included Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Jean Prouvé. However, in recent years her reputation as a furniture designer and architect has matched the stature of her peers – her furniture in particular has become highly prized by collectors. From the 1920s onwards, Perriand was instrumental in bringing the modernist aesthetic to interiors. But she also believed in the synthesis of the arts, and was friends with visual artists such as Pablo Picasso and Fernand Léger. This book will explore Perriand’s journey from the machine aesthetic to her adoption of natural forms, and from modular furniture systems to major architectural projects such as Les Arcs ski resort. Featuring some of her most famous interiors, as well as her original furniture, her photography and her personal notebooks, this book sheds new light on Perriand’s creative process and her place in design history. It will accompany the forthcoming Design Museum exhibition of the same title, which will coincide with the twenty-fifth anniversary of Perriand’s last significant presentation in London, held at the Design Museum in 1996.

Yale University Press Charlotte Salomon and the Theatre of Memory
A long-awaited, new interpretation of Charlotte Salomon’s singular and complex modern artwork, Life? or Theatre? Charlotte Salomon (1917–1943) is renowned for a single, monumental, modernist artwork, Life? or Theatre? (Leben? oder Theater?), comprising 784 paintings and created between 1941 and 1942. This major art‑historical study sheds new light on the remarkable combination of image, text, and music, revealing Salomon’s wealth of references to cinema, opera, Berlin cabaret, and the painter’s self‑consciously deployed modernist engagements with artists such as Van Gogh, Munch, and Kollwitz. Additionally, Griselda Pollock draws attention to affinities in Salomon’s work with that of others who shared her experience of statelessness and menaced exile in Nazi‑dominated Europe, including Hannah Arendt, Sigmund Freud, and Walter Benjamin. Confronting new evidence for the extremity of the young artist’s last months, Pollock examines this significant work for its equally profound testimony to the crimes of the everyday: the sexual abuse of women in their own families. Seeking to reconcile the grandeur of this project’s sweep of a violent history with its unique testimony to the anguish of women, Pollock challenges the prevailing interpretations of Salomon’s paintings as a kind of visual autobiography by threading into her detailed and illuminating visual analyses of the painter’s philosophical art-making a dynamic range of insights from feminist and Jewish studies of modern subjectivity, story-telling, memory work, and historical trauma.

University of Toronto Press Charlotte Lennox: An Independent Mind
Charlotte Lennox (c.1729-1804) was an eighteenth-century London author whose most celebrated novel, The Female Quixote (1752), is just one of eighteen works published over forty-three years. Her stories of independent women influenced Jane Austen, especially in her novels Northanger Abbey and Sense and Sensibility. Susan Carlile's biography places Lennox in the context of intellectual and cultural history and focuses on her role as a central figure in the professionalization of authorship in England. Lennox participated in the most important literary and social discussions of her time, including debates concerning female authorship, the elevation of Shakespeare to national poet, and the role of periodicals as didactic texts for an increasingly literate population. Lennox also contributed to making Greek drama available for English-language audiences and pioneered the serialization of novels in magazines. Carlile's work is the first biographical treatment to consider a new cache of correspondence released in the 1970s and reveals how Lennox was part of an ambitious and progressive literary and social movement.

WW Norton & Co Saving Charlotte: A Mother and the Power of Intuition
When her new-born daughter Charlotte was diagnosed with a rare and deadly leukaemia, Pia de Jong and her husband made a momentous decision: they rejected chemotherapy and instead choose to "wait for what will come". As the following year unfolded, they entered a disorienting world of doctors, medical procedures, and a cast of neighbours and protectors in Amsterdam. de Jong’s house became her inner sanctum, where she gave Charlotte the unfiltered love and strength she needed. Their decision, now known as "watchful waiting", has become the standard medical protocol for Charlotte’s type of leukaemia. This deeply felt memoir reveals the galvanizing impact one child can have on a family, a neighbourhood and a worldwide medical community. Vivid and immersive, Saving Charlotte is also a portrait of a woman’s brave voyage of love, hope and, in its inspiring climax, self-discovery.
