This Norton Critical Edition of Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker’s The Roaring Girl is based on the text from English Renaissance Drama: A Norton Anthology. It is accompanied by generous explanatory annotations, five illustrations, and a detailed introduction. “Contexts” is thematically arranged to include almost all known documents from the period concerning Mary Frith (aka Moll Cutpurse), among them records of her court appearances, letters recounting the same, and her last will. Also reprinted are significant passages from her purported 1662 “autobiography,” The Life and Death of Mrs. Mary Frith. While of dubious veracity, the “autobiography” is useful for comparing the play’s portrayal of Moll with later developments in Moll Cutpurse lore, which the Norton Critical Edition traces through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Perhaps most engaging for classroom discussion are substantial excerpts from the 1620 cross-dressing pamphlets—Hic Mulier; or, The Man-Woman and Haec Vir; or, The Womanish Man—which appear in annotated, modern-spelling versions. Together they give insight into how gender-bending trends in clothing, similar to those practiced by Moll, were understood in the early seventeenth century. A related passage from A Sermon of Apparel adds another perspective on cross-dressing practices. Fourteen critical essays chart the development of scholarly interest in The Roaring Girl, from the first half of the twentieth century, when the play received only passing reference, through the work on city comedy in the 1970s and 1980s, to the explosion of analyses in the late 1980s and 1990s, when the play became a major focus for early modern gender studies. The more recent critical essays move beyond a strict focus on gender and cross-dressing to explore The Roaring Girl’s depiction of other aspects of early modern London, including consumer culture and the contemporary fascination with the language of the criminal underworld. Dr. Watson was the chronicler of every Sherlock Holmes adventure published in The Strand magazine between 1887 and 1927. He wrote them with fastidious accuracy and honesty, so frank in their detailed expression of true human behaviour that they were too risqué for the public morals of the late Victorian era. George Newnes, the editor of The Strand magazine, spent many sleepless nights expurgating each story before its publication. Newnes also discarded Watson’s colourful pictures portraying lively action scenes throughout each submission; they were replaced with more innocuous monochrome illustrations. Newnes’s editing process removed references to Sherlock Holmes’s background and ancestry. The same goes for all of the leading characters. Maybe Newnes thought that accounts of individual backgrounds distracted the reader from the exposition of each story? We do not know. In these recently discovered unexpurgated accounts, we meet Holmes’s family and learn about his heritage. Being the narrator, Dr Watson reveals his inner self in intimate detail, followed closely by “the master detective” himself. We find out about Mrs Hudson and how she came to own 221B Baker Street, and how Professor Moriarty became the master criminal of the Victorian underworld. Some of this new material is quite shocking, even by today’s standards, let alone those of 19th century England. By way of an example, here is the original and unexpurgated version of ‘The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle.’ Book 7 synopsis: It is later December in 1889. Wolfe Frank was Chief Interpreter at the Nuremberg Trials where he was dubbed 'The Voice of Doom'. A playboy turned resistance worker he had fled Germany for England in 1937 having been branded an 'enemy of the state - to be shot on sight'. Initially interned as an 'enemy alien', he was later released and allowed to join the British Army - where he rose to the rank of Captain. Unable to speak English when he arrived by the time of the trials he was considered to be the finest interpreter in the world. In the months following his service at Nuremberg, Frank became increasingly alarmed at the misinformation coming out of Germany so in 1949, backed by the New York Herald Tribune, he risked his life again by returning to the country of his birth to make an 'undercover' survey of the main facets of post-war German life and viewpoints. During his enterprise he worked as a German alongside Germans in factories, on the docks, in a refugee camp and elsewhere. Equipped with false papers he sought objective answers to many questions including: refugees; anti-Semiticism; morality, de-Nazification; religion; nationalism. The NYHT said at the time: 'A fresh appraisal of the German question could only be obtained by a German and Mr Frank had all the exceptional qualifications necessary. We believe the result of his "undercover" work told in human, factual terms, is an important contribution to one of the great key problems of the post-war world ... and incidentally it contains some unexpected revelations and dramatic surprises'. The greatest of those surprises was Frank single handedly tracking down and arresting the SS General ranked 'fourth' on the allies 'most wanted' list - and personally taking and transcribing the Nazi's confession.
