'THE PERFECT HOLIDAY READ' Evening Standard'A JOY FROM START TO FINISH' - Gavin Extence, author of THE UNIVERSE VERSUS ALEX WOODSThere is something about Ove.At first sight, he is almost certainly the grumpiest man you will ever meet. Such unswerving conviction about what the world should be, and a lifelong dedication to making it just so?In the end, you will see, there is something about Ove that is quite irresistible...The word-of-mouth bestseller causing a sensation across Europe, Fredrik Backman's heartwarming debut is a funny, moving, uplifting tale of love and community that will leave you with a spring in your step - and less ready to judge on first impressions a man you might one day wish to have as your dearest friend.

Ohio University Press Windings Of The Labyrinth: Quest And Structure In The Major Novels Of
Author of such feats of storytelling as The Woman in White and The Moonstone, Wilkie Collins has traditionally been recognized far more than for his accomplishments as a serious novelist. In this study of The Moonstone, Peter Thoms argues for a new appreciation of this early master of detection and intrigue. Plotting in Collins, Thoms contends, represents much more than the skillful carpentry of the novelist: It constitutes the essential drama of the major novels themselves, as protagonists struggle for control of the stories in which they find themselves embedded. \u201cMr. Thoms’ scholarly contribution is in recognizing an important constructive quality in Collins’ evident fascination with intricate and intriguing plotting. Other critics, he says, have tended to single out Collins’ plots as indications of his superficiality as a writer. Mr. Thoms’ study does, in fact, demonstrate that there is much more to Collins’ elaborate plots than the delights of suspense and detection. So his main claim is justified in that he increases our respect for the ramifications of Collins’ story-telling techniques.\u201d –John R. Reed The Windings of the Labyrinth asserts that the structures of Collins’s major novels possess surprising sophistication – that each of these novels elaborates a quest for identity, and that this quest for a personal story is intimately tied to the emergence of the novel’s structure. In reappraising Collins’s achievement, Thoms has written an accessible study that will be of interest no only to Victorian scholars, readers of Collins, and students of detective fiction but to anyone interested in the relationship between a novel’s plot and its meaning.

Fonthill Media Ltd SS-Major Horst Kopkow: From the Gestapo to British Intelligence
On 27 May 1942, SS General Reinhard Heydrich was assassinated by British-trained Czech agents who had parachuted into Czechoslovakia. He died of his wounds on 4 June 1942. Two days later, Gestapo Captain Horst Kopkow's department at Reich National Security HQ was given fresh directions. From 6 June 1942 until the end of the war, Kopkow was responsible for coordinating the fight against Soviet and British parachute agents dropped anywhere in Germany or German-occupied territories. This new direction for Kopkow made his name. Within months the "Rote Kapelle" Soviet espionage ring was uncovered in Belgium, who could be traced directly to Berlin and Paris. A new counter-espionage fight had begun, and any agents caught would pay with their lives. In France and Holland the Gestapo caught many Special Operations Executive agents trained in Britain. By spring 1944 almost 150 British agents had been caught and deported to German concentration camps, and almost all had been murdered without trial by the December. Kopkow was directly involved in these murders. Arrested by British forces after the war, Kopkow was extensively interrogated due to his counter-espionage experience. For the next 20 years, Kopkow was a consultant for Britain's Secret Intelligence Service.

Taylor & Francis Inc A General Drama of Pain: Character and Fate in Hardy's Major Novels
This motivational analysis of the protagonists in Thomas Hardy's three most widely read novels--Tess of the d'Urbervilles, The Mayor of Casterbridge, and Jude the Obscure--highlights an often-overlooked aspect of his art. Bernard J. Paris shows Hardy's genius in creating imagined human beings. He demonstrates that while Hardy tends to blame external conditions for his characters' painful fates, their downfalls are due to a very complex combination of cosmic, social, and psychological factors. Hardy's characters are usually discussed primarily in thematic terms. The characters are are so richly portrayed, Paris argues, that they can be better understood independent of Hardy's interpretations, in motivational terms and he utilizes the psychologist Karen Horney's theories to recover Hardy's intuitions. The characters are full of inner conflicts that make them difficult to fathom, but the approach Paris employs explains their contradictions and illuminates their troubled relationships--shedding light on these expertly crafted imagined human beings. This psychological approach to Hardy's characters enables us to understand his characters and gain insight into the implied authors of the works. In addition, the approach shows Hardy's authorial personality. We can see that Hardy treats some defensive strategies more sympathetically than others. Given his view of life as "a general drama of pain," resignation, like that of Hardy's character Elizabeth-Jane, is the strategy he prefers.

University of Illinois Press Team Chemistry: The History of Drugs and Alcohol in Major League Baseball
In 2007, the Mitchell Report shocked traditionalists who were appalled that drugs had corrupted the "pure" game of baseball. Nathan Corzine rescues the story of baseball's relationship with drugs from the sepia-toned tyranny of such myths. In Team Chemistry , he reveals a game splashed with spilled whiskey and tobacco stains from the day the first pitch was thrown. Indeed, throughout the game's history, stars and scrubs alike partook of a pharmacopeia that helped them stay on the field and cope off of it: In 1889, Pud Galvin tried a testosterone-derived "elixir" to help him pile up some of his 646 complete games. Sandy Koufax needed Codeine and an anti-inflammatory used on horses to pitch through his late-career elbow woes. Players returning from World War II mainstreamed the use of the amphetamines they had used as servicemen. Vida Blue invited teammates to cocaine parties, Tim Raines used it to stay awake on the bench, and Will McEnaney snorted it between innings. Corzine also ventures outside the lines to show how authorities handled--or failed to handle--drug and alcohol problems, and how those problems both shaped and scarred the game. The result is an eye-opening look at what baseball's relationship with substances legal and otherwise tells us about culture, society, and masculinity in America.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Fetal Hemoglobin: The Panacea for Major β-Hemoglobinopathies
Intricate processes involved in perpetuating the multitude of physiological phenomena in the human body often encounter aberrations and omissions in the genetic code of life. While such errors often lead to lethal diseases, at other times they provide distinctive survival advantages and thus unscramble cues to unconventional therapeutic strategies for life-threatening conditions. Hereditary Persistence of Fetal Hemoglobin (HPFH) is one such condition wherein the typically inactivated fetal form of hemoglobin (HbF) remains overexpressed even in adult stages of the bearer's life. Strikingly, this condition is known to ameliorate pathological manifestations in patients with aberrant adult hemoglobin synthesis (e.g. β-hemoglobinopathies like β-thalassemia, sickle cell disease etc.). Early researchers in the field expected such patients to suffer from clinical challenges owing to HbF's high affinity to oxygen and consequent difficulty in its release to cells and tissues. Surprisingly, these patients are known to lead a physiologically normal life. Modern-day hematologists and clinical researchers have looked-up to the concept of "HbF reactivation" as a potential curative strategy for patients suffering from β-hemoglobinopathies like β-thalassemia and sickle cell disease. As a result, several drugs like hydroxyurea, 5-azacytidine, cytosine arabinoside, natural products etc. have been tried in clinics to elevate HbF levels in such patients with limited success and poor understanding on the mechanisms of their action. Associated side-effects and complications of using cytotoxic agents like these restrict their use in most instances. Fortunately, with the advent of newer molecular tools and techniques, researchers are focusing their attention to reengineer the molecular machinery and thus reactivate the gamma-globin gene. This book brings together a selection of chapters dedicated to fetal hemoglobin -- its physiological role, regulation, methodologies to manipulate and future strategies. Researchers and scientists interested in the topic will have a comprehensive understanding of the current concepts on fetal hemoglobin modulation and therefore will serve as a launching pad for their research ideas.

Scarecrow Press The History of Brooklyn's Three Major Performing Arts Institutions
Brooklyn's cultural life has always been deeply embedded in its educational and social life, a life that has seen many changes through the 19th and 20th centuries. Although it was one of the largest cities in the US before the Civil War, Brooklyn did not have a permanent performance institution, forcing the residents to look to New York City for culture. This is the first book that investigates the history of Brooklyn's three best-known performing arts institutions: Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College (BCBC), and St. Ann's Center for Restoration and the Arts. Divided into three major sections, this work establishes the cultural history and social context in which these three performing arts institutions developed and thrived. Beginning first with an overview of the birth of the city itself, the book features background histories on the founding of BAM, BCBC, and St. Ann's with reference to their programming, management, architecture, design, and construction. It also expands upon the institutions' physical renovations and innovations, and the artistic visions of changing managements throughout the years.

Princeton University Press 40 Years of Evolution: Darwin's Finches on Daphne Major Island
Renowned evolutionary biologists Peter and Rosemary Grant have produced landmark studies of the Galapagos finches first made famous by Charles Darwin. In How and Why Species Multiply, they offered a complete evolutionary history of Darwin's finches since their origin almost three million years ago. Now, in their richly illustrated new book, 40 Years of Evolution, the authors turn their attention to events taking place on a contemporary scale. By continuously tracking finch populations over a period of four decades, they uncover the causes and consequences of significant events leading to evolutionary changes in species. The authors used a vast and unparalleled range of ecological, behavioral, and genetic data--including song recordings, DNA analyses, and feeding and breeding behavior--to measure changes in finch populations on the small island of Daphne Major in the Galapagos archipelago. They find that natural selection happens repeatedly, that finches hybridize and exchange genes rarely, and that they compete for scarce food in times of drought, with the remarkable result that the finch populations today differ significantly in average beak size and shape from those of forty years ago. The authors' most spectacular discovery is the initiation and establishment of a new lineage that now behaves as a new species, differing from others in size, song, and other characteristics. The authors emphasize the immeasurable value of continuous long-term studies of natural populations and of critical opportunities for detecting and understanding rare but significant events. By following the fates of finches for several generations, 40 Years of Evolution offers unparalleled insights into ecological and evolutionary changes in natural environments.

His theories, mixing philosophical and practical insights, often seem strikingly contemporary. Since their discovery early in this century. these secret treatises have been considered among the most valuable and representative documents in the history of Japanese aesthetics. Boydell & Brewer Ltd Civilizing Thoreau: Human Ecology and the Emerging Social Sciences in the Major Works
Proposes an interdisciplinary solution to the "Thoreau problem" through the connection between his ecological study of nature and his intense interest in the emerging social sciences. Recent book-length studies of Thoreau have focused either on his place in the history of the natural sciences or have applied political principles to his works. None, however, has fully addressed what ecocritic Rebecca Solnit calls "the Thoreau problem," the compartmentalizing of Thoreau's mind into either that of a hermit of nature or that of a champion of social reform. This book proposes an interdisciplinary solution to this problem through the connection between Thoreau's ecological study of nature and his intense interest in the emerging social sciences, especially the history of civilization and ethnology. The book first establishes Thoreau's "human ecology," the relation between the natural sciences and the social sciences in his thinking, exploring how his reading in contemporary books about the history of humanity and racial science shaped his thinking and connecting these emerging anthropological texts to his late nature writings. It then discusses these connections in his major works, including Walden and his "reform papers" such as "Civil Disobedience," the travel narrative A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, The Maine Woods, and Cape Cod. The concluding chapter focuses on Thoreau's attitude toward Manifest Destiny, arguing, against conventional views, that considering both his life and his writing, especially the essay "Walking," we must conclude that he both accepted and endorsed Manifest Destiny as an inevitable result of cultural succession. Richard J. Schneider is Professor Emeritus from Wartburg College. He has authored a monograph and many articles as well as edited three collections on Thoreau.

John Wiley & Sons Inc Contract Strategies for Major Projects: Mastering the Most Difficult Element of Project Management
Major Projects are Delayed by Months or Years, and Cost Millions More Than Budgeted, Because of Common Mistakes Made at the Contracting StageOrganizations that invest huge amounts of capital in major building/industrial projects almost never do the engineering and building themselves. They hire engineering and construction contractors to do it for them. Unfortunately, selecting contractors and negotiating the terms of a major project is one of the most difficult aspects of project management...and organizations waste billions of dollars and "bake in" months or years of delay by doing it wrong. Contracting is also the area of project management that is most prone to firmly held opinions unencumbered by any facts. We intend to remedy that situation with this book. Drawing on a properietary detailed database of over 1100 major projects, the world's leading industrial engineering project consultant, Ed Merrow explains: Key Principles of Contracting for Major Projects: Owners are from Mars; contractors are from Venus All the biggest risks in contracting belong to the owner Contracting “games” will normally be won by contractors, not owners Most risk transfer from owners to contractors is an illusion Contractors do good projects well and bad projects poorly Contractors may have shareholders, but they are not your shareholders! Mixing different contract types with different contractors on the same project is unwise Economize on the need for trust; trust only when being trustworthy has value Merrow also explains: Which contract incentives work and which don’t and WHY Which of over a dozen contracting strategies work best and which ones hardly ever work and WHY The strategic advice in this book is designed for owners and contractor project managers, team members and supply chain, executives, and other business leaders involved in major projects. It's also an indispensable resource for engineers, leaders of industrial firms, bankers, and academics studying the messy realities of the construction and engineering industries.

Duke University Press Chinese Poetry, 2nd ed., Revised: An Anthology of Major Modes and Genres
This is the first paperback edition of a classic anthology of Chinese poetry. Spanning two thousand years—from the Book of Songs (circa 600 B.C.) to the chü form of the Yuan Dynasty (1260–1368)—these 150 poems cover all major genres that students of Chinese poetry must learn. Newly designed, the unique format of this volume will enhance its reputation as the definitive introduction to Chinese poetry, while its introductory essay on issues of Chinese aesthetics will continue to be an essential text on the problems of translating such works into English. Each poem is printed with the original Chinese characters in calligraphic form, coordinated with word-for-word annotations, and followed by an English translation. Correcting more than a century of distortion of the classical Chinese by translators unconcerned with the intricacies and aesthetics of the Chinese language, these masterful translations by Wai-lim Yip, a noted and honored translator and scholar, allow English readers to enter more easily into the dynamic of the original poems. Each section of the volume is introduced by a short essay on the mode or genre of poem about to be presented and is followed by a comprehensive bibliography.

Casemate Publishers King of Airfighters: The Biography of Major "Mick" Mannock, Vc, DSO Mc
Ira Jones' biography of Britain's top scoring ace of World War I has become the subject of some controversy over the last few years, most notably as it is the source of the claim of 73 "kills" for Mannock, thereby making him the number one scoring Allied Ace of the war. Later research has thrown serious doubt on this claim and indeed Mannock himself only claimed 51 kills. Jones' biography is nevertheless an important account, especially when seen in the context of the time in which it was first written. In particular, the biography really gets into the mind of Mannock, the author having been a flying comrade, and portrays the singular nature of his character and the incredible stresses that these pioneer airfighters were under in the last few months of the war by a man who flew in the thick of it.Originally published in 1934 by Ivor Nicholson and Watson in London, this aviation classic has been reprinted many times, yet each time has been reproduced from the original 1930s version of the book. This new edition has been entirely reoriginated. Not a word has been changed, but the original type and page layout have been reworked, as has been the format in which the book is presented, to give a beautiful new treatment for this classic of aviation literature.About the AuthorIra Jones enlisted in 1913. When the war began, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and joined 10 Squadron as an air mechanic. In July 1915 he was sent to France and by January 1916 he was flying combat missions as an observer. Hackett Publishing Co, Inc Classics in Western Philosophy of Art: Major Themes and Arguments
In this synthetic introduction to the history of the philosophy of art, Noël Carroll elucidates and analyzes selected writings on art by Plato, Aristotle, Hutcheson, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Tolstoy, and Bell. Carroll’s narrative tracks developments between major positions in philosophy of art, ranging from the idea that art is unavoidably embedded in society to the evolution of the notion that art is autonomous ("art for art’s sake"), thereby setting the stage for continuing debates in the philosophy of art.Presupposing no prior background, and useful on its own or accompanying the reading of primary works, Classics in Western Philosophy of Art is ideal as a text for introductory undergraduate and graduate courses in philosophy of art and aesthetics, or for anyone interested in learning about the origin of some of our most fundamental conceptions of art in the Western tradition.
