JCB Mohr (Paul Siebeck) Theological Anthropology in Interreligious Perspective
What defines 'humanity' is a seemingly innocuous question and yet one which continues to attract controversy. Directed by this inquiry and bringing together theological insight in conversation with academic interreligious discourse, the present edited volume offers a unique contribution towards articulating the complex and myriad ways in which human life has been conceived and related to the greater vista of reality. Framed around Muslim-Christian theological dialogue, the volume results from a meeting of prominent international scholars, whose contributions investigate the origins of life through to death and beyond. Informed by classical and contemporary theological questions and interests, the volume offers scholarship in the humanities and sciences important insights into debates pertaining to human beings, their nature, future, and purposes.

JCB Mohr (Paul Siebeck) Māturīdī Theology: A Bilingual Reader
Despite its status as one of the great traditions of Sunni Islamic systematic theology, the Māturīdī school and its major texts have remained largely inaccessible to a Western audience. As the first reader of Māturīdī theology ever produced in a Western language, this volume meets an urgent need among scholars and general readers. It features selections ranging from the founder, Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī, to key texts from the broader Māturīdī tradition up to the 18th century. Each selection includes the original Arabic text and an annotated English translation, preceded by a short introduction. The volume's structure mirrors the classical compendia of Islamic systematic theology, known as kalām , exploring questions of Epistemology and Ontology; Metaphysics; Prophethood; Faith, Knowledge and Acts; and Free Will, Predestination, and the Problem of Evil.

Fonthill Media Ltd Tornado F3: A Navigator's Eye on Britain's Last Interceptor
The Tornado F2 had a troubled introduction to service. Unloved by its crews and procured as a political imperative, it was blighted by failures and was developed to counter a threat that disappeared. Modified rapidly before it could be sent to war, the Tornado F3 eventually matured into a capable weapons system, but despite datalinks and new air-to-air weapons, its poor reputation sealed its fate. The author, a former Tornado F3 navigator, tells the story from an insider's perspective from the early days as one of the first instructors on the Operational Conversion Unit, through its development and operational testing, to its demise. David Gledhill reflects on its capabilities and deficiencies and analyses why the aircraft was mostly underestimated by opponents. Although many books have already described the Tornado F3, the author's involvement in its development will provide a unique insight into this complex and misunderstood aircraft programme and dispel some of the myths surrounding it.

Printer Samuel Adams went to collect a debt from bookkeeper and author John Colt and was never seen alive again. Shocking revelations followed: Did John shoot Adams with one of his brother's Colt firearms before hacking him up and packing him in an oblong box? 'Fizzes with clever vignettes and juicy tidbits... [a] joyous romp of a book.' Guardian'A fascinating, rollicking book in search of why, where and how fame strikes. Sit back and enjoy the ride.' Peter Frankopan, author of The Silk Roads'[An] engaging and well-researched book... Jenner brings his material to vivid life' ObserverCelebrity, with its neon glow and selfie pout, strikes us as hypermodern. But the famous and infamous have been thrilling, titillating, and outraging us for much longer than we might realise. Whether it was the scandalous Lord Byron, whose poetry sent female fans into an erotic frenzy; or the cheetah-owning, coffin-sleeping, one-legged French actress Sarah Bernhardt, who launched a violent feud with her former best friend; or Edmund Kean, the dazzling Shakespearean actor whose monstrous ego and terrible alcoholism saw him nearly murdered by his own audience - the list of stars whose careers burned bright before the Age of Television is extensive and thrillingly varied. In this ambitious history, that spans the Bronze Age to the coming of Hollywood's Golden Age, Greg Jenner assembles a vibrant cast of over 125 actors, singers, dancers, sportspeople, freaks, demigods, ruffians, and more, in search of celebrity's historical roots. He reveals why celebrity burst into life in the early eighteenth century, how it differs to ancient ideas of fame, the techniques through which it was acquired, how it was maintained, the effect it had on public tastes, and the psychological burden stardom could place on those in the glaring limelight. DEAD FAMOUS is a surprising, funny, and fascinating exploration of both a bygone age and how we came to inhabit our modern, fame obsessed society.

These are the intense combat experiences of the first Marine to command a special operations task force recounted against a backdrop of his journey from raw Second Lieutenant to Task Force Commander; from leading Marines through the streets of Mogadishu, Baghdad and Mosul to directing special operations in an impossibly complex fight against a formidable foe. SciTech Publishing Inc Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis of High Frequency Structures with MATLAB®
This book presents the theory of adjoint sensitivity analysis for high frequency applications through time-domain electromagnetic simulations in MATLAB®. This theory enables the efficient estimation of the sensitivities of an arbitrary response with respect to all parameters in the considered problem. These sensitivities are required in many applications including gradient-based optimization, surrogate-based modeling, statistical analysis, and yield analysis. Using the popular FDTD method, the book shows how wideband sensitivities can be efficiently estimated for different types of materials and structures, and includes plenty of well explained MATLAB® examples to help readers absorb the content more easily and to make the theory more understandable to the broadest possible audience. Topics covered include a review of FDTD and an introduction to adjoint sensitivity analysis; the adjoint variable method for frequency-independent constitutive parameters; sensitivity analysis for frequency-dependent objective functions; transient adjoint sensitivity analysis; adjoint sensitivity analysis with dispersive materials; adjoint sensitivity analysis of anisotropic structures; nonlinear adjoint sensitivity analysis; second-order adjoint sensitivities; and advanced topics.

The History Press Ltd King's Norton: A History
Standing in front of the former Saracen's Head Inn, with the tower and spire of St Nicolas church ahead, the visitor to King's Norton is presented with a classic image of the English village - a fine medieval church and a spectacular timber-framed house fronting a village green. Until 1911 King's Norton was part of Worcestershire and throughout the 19th century was recognised as one of the most picturesque villages in the county. When Worcestershire historian John Noake visited in 1854 he was enchanted by the ancient 'cross-timbered' houses around the Green, 'where pigs and geese, and donkeys, and boys with their hoops, and little girls with babies nearly as heavy as themselves have rejoiced in rustic felicity from time immemorial.' Yet even as Noake was describing this bucolic scene the signs of change and the growing influence of Birmingham were apparent; the population of the parish was increasing rapidly and factories with their attendant chimneys were being established in the Rea valley. The suburbs began to spread along the major roads from the 1930s and was followed by vast housing developments in the 1960s and 1970s.This comprehensive history explains how King's Norton developed from earliest times to become a small trading centre in the medieval period, with a high level of freedom, which was eventually dominated and swallowed up by its northern neighbour. Even today old trees remain from ancient hedgerows, medieval and later farmhouses have been preserved amongst the new estates, and the industrial archaeology of canals and factories provide evidence with the documentary sources to help us understand how landscape evolved and how people reacted to change. The book, which will certainly serve as the principal source for the history of this ancient manor and parish for many years to come, presents the findings of several decades of work on the history, topography, archaeology and architecture of King's Norton.

Taylor & Francis Inc Kinetic Modelling in Systems Biology
With more and more interest in how components of biological systems interact, it is important to understand the various aspects of systems biology. Kinetic Modelling in Systems Biology focuses on one of the main pillars in the future development of systems biology. It explores both the methods and applications of kinetic modeling in this emerging field. The book introduces the basic biological cellular network concepts in the context of cellular functioning, explains the main aspects of the Edinburgh Pathway Editor (EPE) software package, and discusses the process of constructing and verifying kinetic models. It presents the features, user interface, and examples of DBSolve as well as the principles of modeling individual enzymes and transporters. The authors describe how to construct kinetic models of intracellular systems on the basis of models of individual enzymes. They also illustrate how to apply the principles of kinetic modeling to collect all available information on the energy metabolism of whole organelles, construct a kinetic model, and predict the response of the organelle to changes in external conditions. The final chapter focuses on applications of kinetic modeling in biotechnology and biomedicine.Encouraging readers to think about future challenges, this book will help them understand the kinetic modeling approach and how to apply it to solve real-life problems.Downloadable Resources FeaturesExtensively used throughout the text for pathway visualization and illustration, the EPE software is available on the accompanying downloadable resources. The downloadable resources also include pathway diagrams in several graphical formats, DBSolve installation with examples, and all models from the book with dynamic visualization of simulation results, allowing readers to perform in silico simulations and use the models as templates for further applications.

JCB Mohr (Paul Siebeck) Early Modern Trends in Islamic Theology: 'Abd al-Ghanī al-Nābulusī and His Network of Scholarship (Studies and Texts)
The present volume is dedicated to the study of ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Nābulusī (1641-1731), an outstanding religious scholar, sufi thinker and man of letters from 17th-18th-century Ottoman Syria. With its focus on a careful examination of Nābulusī's multifaceted and enriching textual corpus, the present volume offers an in-depth analysis of both his thought and his intellectual milieu. The essays presented here reflect the wide spectrum of Nābulusī's interests, from scriptural exegesis to theology, from jurisprudence to mysticism, from philosophy to poetry, ethics and aesthetics. Bringing together expertise in Islamic mysticism, theology and jurisprudence, Ottoman studies, and the social and cultural history of the Middle East, it explores Nābulusī's work and persona. The studies included in Part I of this volume remind us that Nābulusī's legacy has many surprises in store for us, and Part II is dedicated to critical editions of three of Nābulusī's short, but nevertheless important, treatises. This volume is intended to be the first of many further publications that would bring together the expertise of numerous Nābulusī scholars across disciplines. The interdisciplinary character of the present volume contributes to a better appreciation of Nābulusī's multifaceted impact on the diversified intellectual and religious history of the 17th-18th-century world of Islam, described until recently as a time of 'stagnation' and 'decline'.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd The Militia in Eighteenth-Century Ireland: In Defence of the Protestant Interest
Shows how the development of the militia in eighteenth century Ireland was closely bound with politics and the changing nature of the Protestant Ascendancy. The militia in eighteenth century Ireland was a contentious issue: initially only those of a certain social and political class could participate, dissenters and catholics being excluded, and the degree of enthusiasm with which people participated was an indication of their commitment, or otherwise, to the regime. However, as this book demonstrates, the militia as an issue changed over the course of the eighteenth century, with, from about 1760, demands for the reform of the militia being a key issue spearheading demands for wider constitutional reform. The book traces the militia in Ireland from early Protestant militia forces in the sixteenth century, through formal establishmentin 1716, to demise in 1776 and re-formation in 1793. It shows how the militia played a larger role in the defence of Ireland than has hitherto been realised, and how its reliability was therefore a key point for government. It discusses how political debates about the militia reflected changing views about the nature of the Irish establishment and how these changing views were incorporated in legislation. It examines how the militia operated as an institution; considers how the militia reflected social and political divisions; and compares the militia in Ireland with similar bodies in England, Scotland and Europe more widely, relating debates about the militia in Ireland to widerdebates about whether a country is best defended by a professional soldiery or a citizen army. Inner Traditions Bear and Company Gnostic Philosophy: From Ancient Persia to Modern Times
Gnosticism was contemporary to early Christianity and its demise can be traced to Christianity's efforts to silence its teachings. The Gnostic message however was not destroyed but simply went underground. Starting with the first emergence of Gnosticism the author shows how its influence extended from the teachings of neo-Platonists and the magical traditions of the Middle Ages to the beliefs and ideas of the Sufis Jacob Boehme Carl Jung Rudolf Steiner and the Rosicrucians and Freemasons. In the language of spiritual freemasonry Gnosis is the rejected stone necessary for the completion of the Temple a Temple of a new cosmic understanding that today's heirs to Gnosticism continue to strive to create. The Gnostics believed that the universe embodies a ceaseless contest between opposing principles. Terrestrial life exhibits the struggle between good and evil life and death beauty and ugliness and enlightenment and ignorance: Gnosis and Agnosis. The very nature of physical space and time are obstacles to humanity's ability to remember its divine origins and recover its original unity with God. Thus the pre-eminent Gnostic secret is that we are God in potential and the purpose of bona fide Gnostic teaching is to return us to our godlike nature. Tobias Churton is a filmmaker and the founding editor of the magazine Freemasonry Today. He studied theology at Oxford University and created the award-winning documentary series and accompanying book The Gnostics as well as several other films on Christian doctrine mysticism and magical folklore. He lives in England.
