The concept of the urban parterre plays a central role in considering what makes a city liveable. The urban parterre is the zone of the city at eye level: the urban ground floor. It is a fabric composed of the built and unbuilt spaces in which we move and interact every day. While urban research has previously tended to focus on either the ground floor level or public spaces, this book considers the systemic interplay of ground floor, inner courtyards, streets, and their interfaces. Using Urban Parterre Modelling to carry out a comprehensive analysis of architectural structures dating from the late nineteenth century (the Gründerzeit), the hidden challenges and opportunities posed by these buildings are explored and discussed with reference to the sustainable, resilient, and circular future use of existing architecture. The built heritage of postwar modernism has been under threat from climate change and the high expectations of society for years. The tremendous volume of building stock was erected with high hopes for the future within just a short period of time—and frequently using construction techniques that were as yet unproven. Despite the many research efforts focusing on spatial concepts and societal utopias between the 1950s and 1970s, the practice-oriented field of construction research lacks binding recording and evaluation strategies for buildings, materials, and construction methods for the majority of buildings of all types. This affects projects from solitary churches, residential settlements, and green spaces right through to large cultural, sporting, and education constructions, as well as the engineering structures of the urban and peripheral infrastructure.In order to preserve this existing stock as a resource for the future, new recording and evaluation tools that take into account technical, construction, ecological, and economic factors are necessary. This book presents possibilities for the management of our recent constructed heritage on the basis of ongoing projects by the DFG-Netzwerk Bauforschung Jungere Baubestande 1945+ buildings preservation network.

The inter- and transdisciplinary research project Drei Zimmer, Küche, Diele, Bad used a vacant home to formulate and consider questions about the future of housing. The residence, a listed building ensemble in Weimar dating from the 1920s, initially served as a work, discussion, and exhibition space for students of architecture and urbanism. A small number of significant interventions transformed it into a space that enabled not just alternative dwelling options, but also neighborhood-focused activities. The new residents were selected through a concept proposal process, and the researchers analyzed their usage of the dwelling over the course of two years. Lasting five years in total (2017–2021), the project began as a cooperation between the Bauhaus-Universitat Weimar, the Thuringer Aufbaubank funding and development agency, and the Weimarer Wohnstatte municipal housing company under the aegis of the Thuringian Ministry for Infrastructure and Agriculture.

In prosperous regions, housing markets are under significant pressure. With the focus on preserving land and developing brownfield sites, post-war housing estates are being earmarked for densification, as their density is perceived as rather low and the ownership is often concentrated in the hands of only a few publicly owned housing associations. In this setting, postwar estates are in danger of losing their characteristic spatial structures and landscaping. Adaptive Re-Use discusses strategies for the development of post-war housing by referring to European case studies from the period of 1945 to 1975. After the Schlehdorf monastery became too big for the aging Dominican sisters, they collectively decided to sell the building and move into a newly built extension. Artist Jutta Görlich, photographer Ulrike Myrzik, and cultural manager Ulrike Rose visited the Schlehdorf sisters and other female convents gripped by the process of change. In the book, they explore the present-day disappearance of these convents, photograph the transformations the institutions are undergoing, and carry out interviews with those who live there. The book not only reveals the paths that these shrinking communities chart when their dwellings become too large, but also what happens to the former monastery and the significance that spatial change can have for monastic coexistence. Le Corbusier’s Unité d’habitation "Typ Berlin"—built 1957–58—is an exceptional testimony to Berlin’s post-war architecture. Although it follows the basic concept of a "vertical village" as envisioned by the architect, the gigantic block, containing 530 apartments, clearly differs from the Marseille original. However, as a result of modifications required by the client, the construction occupies the position of an outsider in Le Corbusier’s oeuvre. Authors from the fields of architecture, urbanism, art history, and cultural studies precisely set out the genesis of the listed building for the first time. In addition, they investigate the development of the "Unité d’habitation" model, the Berlin variant’s unique color concept, and carry out a comparison with the four typologically related buildings in France. Urban green spaces are gaining significance in our everyday lives and also contribute to our identification with the urban environment. The reclaiming of open spaces in cities has become a political issue that reflects quite different views and ways of dealing with this development. 25 landscape architects based in Germany, as well as an architect, outline in a prescribed form their ideal vision of an urban garden: their favourite garden. Kamel Louafi asks the contributors about their approaches and visions, their way of working, as well as about issues such as sustainability and urban gardening. The book shows the wide variety of possible interventions of landscape architecture, presented through sketches and texts, which nevertheless have similar aims. How can city planners of the green building transition rethink and reuse what already exists, rather than perpetually looking for something new? What planning cultures does an open society need? What points of collaboration are missing between city officials and local stakeholders? Open churches are valuable public spaces that embrace new possibilities while continuing to fulfill their liturgical function. The focus of Kirche Raum Gegenwart is the sustainable transformation of these locations in a way that goes beyond purely architectural intervention. Using four case studies from dioceses in southern Germany, the book and traveling exhibition of the same name provide concrete examples of what these changes might look like. Together with relevant stakeholders from the local communities, artists and architects have taken widely varying approaches to the supplementary uses of church spaces. From early modernist designs like Hans Poelzig’s archetypal gas station to the Stuttgarter Schule standardized filling stations on the Reichsautobahn, and through to Lothar Götz’s modular post-war constructions—which paved the way for the standardized corporate designs that flourished later—gas stations have been a key element of our surroundings since the 1920s. While the design and construction of gas stations has since become a significant area of work for well-known architecture and engineering firms, this type of building has thus far received barely any attention in academic discourse. Franz Arlart examines and systematizes the development of gas stations in Germany with reference to the architects that designed them. Taking into account functional, technical, and symbolic considerations, this book presents the architectural development of the building type from 1920 to 2020 and outlines the trends that will shape gas station design going forward.

Although public spaces in the former East Germany were elaborately refurbished after reunification, many small towns and villages continue to suffer from population exodus and high vacancy rates. One of those towns is Tribsees in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where 70 of the 240 houses in the downtown area are currently unoccupied. In 2020, a team of artists and students led by Ton Matton engaged with a number of these buildings, sounding out possibilities and concepts for the future of the town in collaboration with residents. This resulted in new narratives of co-existence—involving large amounts of improvisation and not always in adherence to the letter of the law—based on individual responsibility, self-sufficiency, and local production. Slow Urban Planning does more than document this project and its artistic interventions, some of which were implemented in the context of the Tribsees Centenniale. It also illuminates how urban planning processes tend to proceed in general, and how regulatory structures can be adapted in order to better integrate performative processes.
