In the short quivering narratives of the late Middle Ages, called mars, love and sexuality are "negotiated" in a very literal sense: love and sexuality are not only described with mercantile metaphors, but also appear as a medium of exchange that is offered, exchanged or resold. Susanne In her study, Reichlin analyzes this exchange of the dissimilar and shows how the narratives are also formally shaped by it: Forms of reciprocity, displacement and circulation not only constitute the economies of desire, but also those of narration. It also relates literary barter to the question of the relationship between gift and barter in premodern societies, which is widely discussed in medieval studies and cultural philosophy.

Contingency - it is repeatedly stated - was only "discovered" in the early modern period. Before that, all incidents, no matter how inexplicable, were interpreted as expressions of a higher, godly order. The anthology takes this postulate as an opportunity to shed light on the diversity of medieval contingency concepts in literary texts. On the basis of exemplary analyzes of legends, ancient and court novels as well as fairs, poetry and novels of the early modern period, questions are asked about genre-specific contingency concepts as well as about literary-historical shifts and reassignments.
