University College Dublin Press Recoveries: Neglected Episodes in Irish Cultural History 1860-1912
In three contributions to the little-researched subject of the history of science in Ireland, John Wilson Foster looks at neglected episodes in Irish cultural history from mid-Victorian to Edwardian times. He discusses Darwinism in late 19th-century Ireland and its impact on Irish churchmen, with special reference to Darwin's champion John Tyndall, whose famous declaration of materialism in his Presidential Address to the British Association for the Advancement of Science in Belfast 1874 provoked a vehement response from the leaders of the Protestant as well as Catholic churches. Foster then moves to the Belfast of 1911 and the building and launching of the Titanic, which he sees as the culmination of the engineering genius of Belfast from the mid-19th to early 20th century. In his third essay, Foster looks at the growing interest in Belfast towards the end of the 19th century in amateur scientific fieldwork (for example, botany), encouraged by the values and preoccupations on Victorian culture. The book is based on lectures delivered at NUI Maynooth in the National University of Ireland's Visiting Lectureship series.

Belcouver Press Ireland out of England
''Ireland out of England'' plays with the ironies and follies of the campaign for a unified independent Ireland that has expressed little insight or care about what's involved. The title essay recounts the constant trouping of Southern Irish artists and professionals to Britain where they live, are welcomed and flourish. They are the talented crests of historic waves of Irish for whom England is the land of opportunity, as warmly familiar as the towns and fields of Leinster, Munster and Connaught. How do we square the Irish in Britain with the anti-Britishness of the politicians and pundits back home in Ireland, or with the clamour for the removal of Northern Ireland from the very UK in which so many Irish prosper? The book reveals other inconvenient truths about the push for a united Ireland that benign-sounding destination that to be reached seems to require a flight from reality and a refusal to let Northern Ir

Indiana University Press Volunteers: A Social Profile
Who tends to volunteer and why? What causes attract certain types of volunteers? What motivates people to volunteer? How can volunteers be persuaded to continue their service? Making use of a broad range of survey information to offer a detailed portrait of the volunteer in America, Volunteers provides an important resource for everyone who works with volunteers or is interested in their role in contemporary society. Mark A. Musick and John Wilson address issues of volunteer motivation by focusing on individuals' subjective states, their available resources, and the influence of gender and race. In a section on social context, they reveal how volunteer work is influenced by family relationships and obligations through the impact of schools, churches, and communities. They consider cross-national differences in volunteering and historical trends, and close with consideration of the research on the organization of volunteer work and the consequences of volunteering for the volunteer.

Notting Hill Editions Pilgrims of the Air: The Passing of the Passenger Pigeons
This is a story of a scarcely credible abundance, of flocks of birds so vast they made the sky invisible. It is also a story, almost as difficult to credit, of a collapse into extinction so startling to the inhabitants of the New World as to provoke a mystery. In the fate of the North American passenger pigeon we can read much of the story of wild America - the astonishment that accompanied its discovery, the allure of its natural 'productions', the ruthless exploitation of its 'commodities' and the ultimate betrayal of its peculiar genius. And in the bird's fate can be read, too, the essential vulnerability of species, the unpredictable passage of life itself.

John Wiley & Sons Inc Elements of Solid State Physics
Elements of Solid State Physics Second Edition M. N. Rudden and J. Wilson University of Northumbria at Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK This textbook provides a basic introduction to the principles of solid state physics and semiconductor devices and will prove essential for first and second year students of physics, materials science and electrical/electronic engineering courses. It assumes no prior knowledge of quantum or statistical mechanics and relies on simple models to illustrate the physical principles. However, the opportunity has been taken in this edition to extend the concept of energy bands to a consideration of E--k curves, and certain new material has been added, notably relating to superconductivity and optoelectronic devices, including lasers, following significant developments in these areas. Elements of Solid State Physics, Second Edition, presents the student with an essentially non-mathematical approach to the subject. Arranged in a logical sequence with many clear illustrations, each chapter has a number of worked examples and discussion points, as well as questions and answers. Readers of this fully revised and updated edition will receive a thorough grounding in the principles of solid state physics and should have sufficient knowledge about modern electronic devices to proceed to more advanced texts in this area. Main Contents: Some Aspects of Modern Physics; Structure of Crystalline Solids; Theories of Conduction and Magnetism; Energy Bands in Solids; Quantum Theory of Conduction; Semiconductor Devices.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Industrial Clusters and Regional Business Networks in England, 1750-1970
Although economists have long recognised industrial districts as one of the key features of many economies, it is only recently that attention has been focused on the region as an effective means of generating accurate insights into the larger picture of economic performance. This renewed interest in regional issues has also placed at centre stage the role played by networks as a principal organisational feature of the local business community, providing scholars with a rich topic for investigation and debate. Recent work has shown that universal generalisations concerning the impact of networking on the performance of industrial clusters lack credibility, highlighting the consequent need to compare the role played by business networks in a variety of regions. Using a copious range of research material examining several British regions, this volume poses a series of fundamental questions about the nature of industrial clusters and networks. Particular attention is paid to identifying the basic characteristics of a network, outlining how they evolved in key industrial clusters, and assessing their impact on industrial performance, both regionally and nationally. The durability of such networks is another key thread that runs through the essays, prompting comparison with industrial clusters in Britain and abroad. These are issues which stimulate discussion on a wide range of factors within the disciplines of business, economic and social history.

John Wiley & Sons Inc A Baptist Among the Jews
Like most Christians, Mary Blye Howe was uninformed about Jewish ritual and tradition. To satisfy her curiosity she joined a Jewish study group held in the home of a Hasidic rabbi. A Baptist Among the Jews is Howe's first-person account of her eye-opening experience of studying with that welcoming group and how this experience led her to a deeper, richer relationship with her God. While learning about the traditions of Judaism and studying the Torah, Howe discovered a new world of worship and ritual that expanded her experience to include several different Jewish groups, among them Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox. She reveled in the joys of arguing with God (even though God always wins), synagogue-hopping on the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, and dancing with a sefer torah through the streets of Dallas. Page after page, we join Howe on her religious quest and discover how her once-narrow concept of God has expanded with her ability to read the scriptures and understand this new faith. Howe's profound and transforming experiences helped her develop a new sense of worship— one that eschews spectatorship in favor of participation.
