From Ice Age to Wetlands – the Lea Valley’s Return to Nature was inspired by the imaginative community-focused project known as Walthamstow Wetlands. The Walthamstow Reservoirs in Waltham Forest, London are being transformed into an urban wetland nature reserve which will give visitors free access to the wildlife and industrial heritage of this historic area. In this book, Jim Lewis highlights the many and various major events that have helped to shape the Lea Valley and its environs. He also takes the opportunity to explain how scientists, engineers, developers and agriculturalists are coming together in their understanding of the importance of helping industry, agriculture and nature to co-exist by developing new ways of protecting our diminishing natural resources. Many of the stories within this book come together to demonstrate how the Lea Valley region is a microcosm of global environmental events that have serious implications for our planet. The post-war years saw a massive decline in the Lea Valley’s industrial base. This was particularly marked by the collapse in furniture, electronics and electrical manufacturing that had been affected by cheap imports from countries abroad who had developed and streamlined their industries during the war years. Also affecting the collapse was a reluctance by some British manufacturers to invest and update their businesses in the light of the increasing overseas competition. However, in recent years the Lea Valley has seen a marked increase in the manufacture, development and distribution of food and drink products within the region. This upsurge has, in a way, complemented the work of earlier food and drink producers, several of whom have increased their product range and are now not only supplying and sustaining the British consumer markets, but also a number of markets overseas. This book not only uncovers the Lea Valley’s emerging food and drink industry, but also highlights the history of those regional establishments that provided sustenance for earlier generations. While it is not possible to cover every food retailer, manufacturer, wholesaler and microbrewery within the Lea Valley region, it is hoped that those establishments mentioned in this book will give the reader a “flavour” of how the valley’s food and drink industries are evolving and changing. In fact, it would seem that before this book has reached the printer, another micro-brewery has popped up or a new food wholesaler, manufacturer and distributor has emerged.

Jules Thorn (1899-1980) was born in Austria and emigrated to England in the early 1920s. Over the ensuing 60 years he created a substantial group of successful companies operating in the electronics sector. At its peak, Thorn Electrical Industries was one of the UK's largest electrical businesses, employing over 100,000 people, and including such well-known names as Thorn Lighting, Ferguson Radio, Radio Rentals, DER, Tricity and Kenwood. In collaboration with Jules Thorn's grandchildren, Jim Lewis has written this biography of 'a very private man'. His legacy lives on in the Jules Thorn Charitable Trust: 'Knighted in 1964, Sir Jules was a noted philanthropist, who created his charitable trust primarily to support medical research. As a result of his endowment the Trust has been able to commit many millions of pounds to a very wide range of charitable causes'.

This book marks the long-term installation of Robert Gober’s (born 1954) seminal Untitled (1992) at Glenstone Museum. Untitled is an immersive, multi-sensorial installation with diverse constituent parts: sinks with running water, darkened exterior pathways, a brightly-lit interior chamber, a hand-painted 360-degree mural and discrete sculptural elements made to appear like prison windows, boxes of rat bait and bundles of newspaper. Robert Gober includes never-before-published archival images of the work’s original presentation at the Dia Center for the Arts in New York, an oral history based on interviews with the artist and collaborators, an original essay by author Jim Lewis and extensive imagery of the piece as installed at Glenstone Museum.
