The collection of essays highlights a dimension of Paul's theology of justification which has been rather neglected in earlier decades: that his teaching emerged as an integral part of his understanding of his commission to preach the gospel to non-Jews; and that his dismissal of justification 'by works of the law' was directed not so much against Jewish 'legalism' but rather against his fellow Jews' assumption that the law remained a dividing wall separating Christian Jews from Christian Gentiles. The authors of the papers presented in this conference volume aim to engage in as complete as possible a study of the key passages in the letters of Paul which deal with or have a bearing on his understanding of and attitude to the Mosaic Law. They draw together a representative sample of the range of current scholarly opinion on these passages. The conference participants searched as far as possible for common ground on a wide range of exegetical and theological disputes and wanted to encourage and help facilitate disputants to take fuller account of the strength of the positions they disagree with."As this volume illustrates so well, the historical and theological issues surrounding Paul's view of the Law are notoriously complex. Der Band gibt die Vorträge der Zweiten europäischen orthodox-westlichen Exegetenkonferenz vom 8.-15. September 2001 im Rilakloster in Bulgarien wieder. Im Herbst 1998 fand in der Theologischen Akademie des Klosters Neamt in Rumänien ein erstes Symposium orthodoxer und katholischer sowie evangelischer Neutestamentler statt. Namhafte Wissenschaftler aus Ost- und Westeuropa arbeiteten an grundlegenden Fragen der Hermeneutik der Bibel. Dabei ging es nicht darum, die konfessionellen Vorverständnisse auszublenden, sondern sie für das Verstehen der Bibel fruchtbar zu machen. Die Beiträge stehen für einen ökumenischen Dialog und die Suche nach einer christologischen Hermeneutik, die das Neue Testament heute als Buch der Kirche verstehen will. Die Texte sind in deutscher oder englischer Sprache geschrieben, mit einer kurzen Zusammenfassung in der jeweils anderen Sprache.
